We are still pulling out the gems that have made “Been Around” one of the albums of the year. “Finest Actor” is one of those exercises in which Erin Moran proves herself to be a master at managing melancholy and sadness, with elegance and strength, conjuring a combination of absolutely exquisite details (that guitar with tremolo, that clavichord, the piano), making her a unique figure in the current music scene. To go with the release of this Digital Single, we have a new video, in which a woman in the autumn of her life goes to the movies to submerge herself in memories of the great Hollywood classics: Gary Cooper, James Dean… There is only one other person in the audience in the whole theater. And at the exit… That thing that happens in life in the big city happens. For the second time on this album, Tom Gagnaire directs the video, once again using the effect of cameras like the PANASONIC NV-M5EP, distorting colors and creating special textures, and even more so considering the cinematic tribute of this audiovisual work. Like the best liquor, Erin Moran’s albums must be savored sip by sip, little by little, letting the flavor strengthen. Pure pleasure.

TRACKLIST: 01 Jody

We have already told you about the wonder that was “Been Around”, but the album by A GIRL CALLED EDDY is turning into a phenomenon on many levels. We know about the support it is receiving from critics, but its fan base is growing at an incredible rate, the way the best of news spreads: word of mouth. Or, keyboard to screen; as you wish. It is a combination of impeccable songs and a handful of marvelous videos. This new single of “Jody” is joining this handful now. With echoes of Laura Nyro, it is one of the brightest songs, musically speaking, and the saddest, lyrically. Erin Moran’s farewell to her friend Jody is represented here full of color and full of class, in a new show of prodigious animation by Pooley (Woom Studio). Vintage and current interact with the song’s lyrics in an absolutely marvelous visual work, which also pays homage to the graphic designer Saul Bass. We are enjoying this album so much. It is such a pleasure to discover it down piece by piece.

TRACKLIST: 01 Big Mouth

Both the public’s and the critics’ reactions to “Been Around” make it clear that the return of A GIRL CALLED EDDY to the current music scene has become one of the musical events of the year. The elegance, the arrangements, and the charisma of Erin Moran’s voice have been unquestionable secret weapons, and they are put into play again on this latest Digital Single, “Big Mouth”. It is a song full of silences, that opens marvelously with one of those choruses that link Erin Moran to Carole King or Joni Mitchell. Because her stuff smells like a classic, like music that will be untouched by the passing of time.

And to go along with the release, we have a video made by Tom Gagnaire, who directed the video for “Talk To Me” by THE LAST DETAIL when it first came out, with a similar technique. Aiming for the effect of cameras along the lines of the PANASONIC NV-M5EP, an apparatus from the 80’s that recorded on tape and saturated and distorted colors, Tom gives us an impressionistic (surrealist even, at times) take on a story full of symbolism, with protagonists who imprint their own vital proclamations on long wooden and cardboard signs that they carry with them everywhere they go. It is a delicacy that gives the perfect images for such an exquisite song and reinforces the idea that a great album is simultaneously a starting point for a series of great works. The wait was long, and the reunion, splendid. “Been Around” has meant the return of A GIRL CALLED EDDY to the current music scene, after more than fifteen years of discographic silence, and the response to her new songs has been magnificent all over the world. The English-speaking media, as well as the French, German, Japanese, Italian, and of course Spanish media, are coming undone with praise for an album that they are calling a classic, tying it to major names that make up the history of music, like Carole King, Steely Dan and Chrissie Hynde. Among other praise, Mojo wrote that “Transcending production playfulness and writerly wit, “Been Around” has heart, soul, a voice, and tunes to die for, an early highlight of 2020”. Uncut highlights that “Eddy has grown into a voice of Carpenterish creaminess since her eponymous 2004 debut, and it delivers vintage-dressed vignettes such as “Big Mouth” and “Charity Shop Window”, with wistful warmth and Ray-Ban-shaded regret”. A little more than a year ago we released a very special album from a new project called THE LAST DETAIL, a super group, formed by FUGU and A GIRL CALLED EDDY. Or in other words, Mehdi Zannad and Erin Moran. Just over a year later, here we are releasing an album that many people didn’t ever think would every come, the second A GIRL CALLED EDDY album. While her debut came out in 2004 to much critical acclaim and was produced by Richard Hawley, it has been a while to say the least. But here is “Been Around” and yes, it was definitely worth the wait. Very much worth it.

Throughout her career she has collaborated and provided vocals on projects as varied as Ron Sexsmith (“Exit Strategy Of The Soul”), SUPER FURRY ANIMALS, to French superstar Phillip Katerine’s indie classic “Parlez Vous Anglais, Mr. Katerinecategoría”. Her debut album saw her out on tour supporting acts as diverse as Josh Ritter, Rufus Wainwright, THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH and THE CURE. And with that first record Moran has gathered a rather impressive list of fans: from Jane Birkin, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Tracey Thorn to Robert Smith, Don Henley, Jarvis Cocker and Burt Bacharach to name just a few.

They made us wait, but we finally have the second album from Erin Moran, otherwise known as A GIRL CALLED EDDY, after that marvelous debut in 2004 produced by Richard Hawley, and the 2018 album with THE LAST DETAIL. “Been Around” is one of those albums that can be sniffed out as classic from quite a distance, and while we could confirm the elegance and echoes of Laura Nyro on the Single that is also the title-track for the album, we are using another song as an advance for the album now. “Someone’s Gonna Break Your Heart” is one of those pop songs that should be playing endlessly on the radio. It is a clear tribute to Chrissie Hynde and her PRETENDERS, with a song full of life and an unforgettable chorus, with enduring, dynamic, impeccable lyrics and majestic arrangements. It is truly marvelous.

The vitality of the song is perfectly reflected in the video that comes with this Digital Single. The actress Sita Pieracinni – in a magnificent exercise that places her somewhere between Buster Keaton and Debbie Reynolds, between the comical and the sunniest elegance – peels away the different levels of daylight (what a marvelous exercise in light this video is) while trying to put on a jacket in a spacious and empty apartment. We are still savoring the sweetness of that marvelous album by THE LAST DETAIL, and we are here with a big surprise: after fifteen years, there is a new album by A GIRL CALLED EDDY. It’s called “Been Around”, it’s coming out on Elefant Records and we are immensely happy.

Because these fifteen years, despite the silence in terms of recording and releasing, have been years of dedication in which, both in the form of collaborations (Ron Sexsmith, SUPER FURRY ANIMALS) and admirations (Jarvis Cocker, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Nina Persson, Jane Birkin, Robert Smith, Tracey Thorn and even Burt Bacharach himself), the figure of Erin Moran has been considerably strengthened on behalf of a large part of the recording industry. And this album gives meaning to such a long period of time. And the song being released as an advance single, which is also the title track, and which we are releasing today, explains everything clearly: a life process of preparation, discovery, life and death, falling out of love, which have led her to the album she wanted to make. It is beyond perfect, and smells like an instant classic, leaving behind the shadows to enjoy the light-flooded chiaroscuros.
