ELEFANT RECORDS: 25th Anniversary [1989-2014]"25 years with Elefant Records"

We’re going to release 25 different albums to celebrate these 25 years of absolute craziness. New albums, vinyl rereleases, compilations and a few special products. Some of the things are already decided, like the homage we want to pay to LE MANS, “25 canciones de LE MANS” (25 Songs by LE MANS), covered by some of our favorite groups. There will also be a compilation of 25 favorite songs from recent months from groups on other labels; the new rerelease of FAMILY’s album; the compilation “Hong Kong” that was never released; and a rerelease of LA CASA AZUL or LOS FLECHAZOS, for example.

The first two items from our 25th anniversary special releases are:

In 2003, “Un Soplo En El Corazón”, the FAMILY album that definitively shifted the evolution of pop music made in Spain and that became a landmark of a cult group like few we will enjoy in this lifetime, had its 10-year release anniversary. To celebrate that sweet heart attack, Elefant Records, in collaboration with Rockdelux magazine, released an album in homage to the original, with diverse artists, both new and renowned, giving brave, daring, revered versions of the songs that made up such an inimitable album.

Now that the album has reached its twentieth anniversary, so that it is available to everyone, everywhere, especially to the new generations, Elefant Records is rereleasing it in digital format, where we will once again be able to enjoy these daring and curious versions. Like the arid poetry of ANA D, the immense sweetness of LA BUENA VIDA, FANGORIA’s double homage, or the dreamy melancholy of the versions by LOS PLANETAS, AMA, PARADE, APENINO, and CHUCHO.

ASTRUD, the most daring with their priceless live vocal revision of “El Bello Verano” adorned with the eternal melody of “The Pink Panther” soundtrack, and LA CASA AZUL’s powerful version with a fun, imaginative Shibuya-Kei rhythm, also participated on the album. The homage, made with all the love in the world, went beyond the concept of homage and became a part of the mood of the moment, with songs that are key to our way of understanding music toda [ Read more ]

In October it will be ten years since we released one of the most unique records that have ever been done in Spain and, we dare say, elsewhere. A kind of cosmic-melodic chanson that had never been done before and has not been done ever since. Ana D has become since then a legendary name to whisper to each other’s ears, and we want to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her only official album as it deserves: with a full re-release that rises to its condition of lost classic album, joining an extra bonus album that enhances even more the new release.

Today, "Satélite 99" sounds as fascinatingly weird and beautiful as it did the first day. As if a more sophisticated Martin Rev collaborated with a tattooed, black-haired Nancy Sinatra, or with a mysteriously distant Astrud Gilberto, on this album Ana D and her companions, producers and arrangers (Ibon Errazkin and Javier Corcobado) used vintage instruments and forgotten beat boxes to create their own kind of "acoustic synth-pop", with references that ranged from Kurt Weill and Serge Gainsbourg to SUICIDE themselves.

Since ten years ago, "Satélite 99" is a secret pleasure that has not stopped bewitching new followers with a formula that is as simple as it is effective: a voice that’s always on the verge of breaking, and minimal arrangements that don’t try to do anything else than enhancing the timeless beauty of the songs. Since the very moment when it was released, the [ Read more ]

Last year, Taiwanese label Avant Garden Records released several selected record from Elefant’s recent catalogue: “Satélite 99” by Ana D (in a similar edition to that released by Argentinian label Índice Virgen some years ago, featuring extra songs from the live album Grimsey Records released in the States), “Idioma suave” by ENTRE RÍOS, “Popemas” by NOSOTRÄSH, “Canciones de temporada” by NIZA, “Underachievers please try harder” by CAMERA OBSCURA…

The results of this collaboration has proved very satisfactory for all the parties involved, and it’s going ahead now with new releases from our catalogue in Taiwan. Next july, Avant Garden will release there “Cierra la puerta al salir” by NOSOTRÄSH (with the addition of the videoclip for the song “Dando vueltas”) and “Onda” by ENTRE RÍOS, also with a video and two extra tracks: “Si fuimos” (song taken from the “This is my country” compilation, formerly released on the Jabalina label) and “Por ti”, one of the first songs ever composed by the Buenos Aires trio, previously released on the first vinyl single the band did on Elefant.

The exchange between Elefant and Avant Garden isn’t over yet. Later on in time, our Taiwanese friends plan to release a compilation by NIZA, which will include songs from their singles, unreleased tracks, live takes [ Read more ]

This week is published in Spain and Argentina the book titled "Curvas Peligrosas" (Editorial Lumen), a compilation featuring strips and illustrations by brilliant Argentinian cartoonist Maitena, very famous all over the world for her witty and hilarious look at the female world and the struggle with men´s impossibility to understand women. The book comes along with a ten song CD featuring some of her favourite songs, and among them we find tracks from the Elefant Records catalogue, by Ana D and ENTRE RÍOS.

Following her successful series, "Altered Women", this new series travels along different, more complex paths. Along with classic themes as the female neurosis, the couple, the children, one´s own body, new subjects come out in this book: social patterns, contemporary behaviours, fashion, consumerism. In her own words: "drawing is a lonely job. Sometimes I need silence, and sometimes I need music. The songs on this album were by my side during the last year and a half, whilst I was doing this book. I wanted to share them with you". Her vignettes are regularly published on such respected newspapers as El País in Spain, Le Figaro in France, La Stampa in Italy, Público in Portugal and La Nación in Argentina, among many others.

For the album, Maitena Burundarena (Buenos Aires, 1962) has cosen some of her most beloved songs from the recent times. Along with latin classics as Paquita la del Barrio, she has pl [ Read more ]

Popland and Cinemaspop are two stores (actually three, because Popland has two different premises) from the Malasaña area in Madrid, but they both provide half Spain and abroad with aesthetic pleasures. In Popland, an enormous variety of accessories, garnishing, furniture, records and pop memorabilia on the whole can be found, whereas in Cinemaspop, pop culture comes on the top of movie going and cinema love. Two colouristic concepts with a passionate interest for pop’s different sides, that were to meet Elefant Records’ music.

Both stores have just released the album "Popland 25 hit parade", including that number of successful songs from Elefant Records catalogue: COOPER, LA CASA AZUL, CAMERA OBSCURA, BERLANGA, LE MANS, HEAVENLY or JUNIPER MOON, among others, playing the perfect soundtrack to the lush aesthetic of this retro consumption’s paradise.

The song "Me quedo contigo" (included in "Satélite 99", Elefant 97) by Ana D has been chosen by Pedro Almodovar to be included in the compilation "Viva la tristeza!" (Mila music/Warner); the album compiles the songs that, according to Pedro himself, inspired and helped him throughout the process of writing the script for his latest film, "Hable con ella". Pedro Almodovar talks about "Viva la tristeza!": The cd you are holding in your hands is composed by the songs that accompanied me while I was writing "Hable con ella". All of them were good for the story while I was creating it in my computer. All of them were good for me too: they stayed with me with the efficiency and the intensity of a secret lover. If you read the script by chance while listening to the songs, you will realise both things merge in a single one, we could say it1s an alternative, secret soundtrack for "Hable con ella"…

Artists featuring in the album: 1-Shirley Horn 2-Jimmy Scott 3-Goldfrapp 4-Michael brook& Djivan Gasparyan5-Albert Plá 6-Ana D 7-Chavela Vargas 8-Kepa Junquera 9-Caetano Veloso10-Chet Baker 11-Nina Simone12-Gregory Isaacs 13-Nicolette

Meanwhile, Ana D, the great melodic diva from outer space, is currently working on new songs in her satellite, with the help of Sergio Fernández, who had previously worked with her, playing guitar during her last tour around the United States; right now, we can [ Read more ]
