Kev, Colin, Jamie and Noel spend a tremendous amount of time crafting their songs to perfection. With ten years of meticulous pop songcraft behind ATTIC LIGHTS, we now hold in our hands their third album, “Love In The Time Of Shark Attacks”. The band prove that even though time passes for everyone else, they maintain the same pop inspiration, killer melodies and heavenly harmonies that have seen them compared to THE LEMONHEADS, TEENAGE FANCLUB and R.E.M. With the rest of the world turning upside down and getting crazier with each passing day, ATTIC LIGHTS still hold tightly to their core values of love and imagination.

Who could argue as you place the needle in the groove and hear those opening notes of “Never By Myself”categoría This song was the advance Single for the album and has it’s own peculiar story behind it. It was written by Colin when he got lost and left behind after a concert in Inverness (Scotland). The band were so tired that night that no one realized Colin wasn’t in the tour bus and they left for the next city. Colin’s phone was out of battery and he spent the whole night wandering around the town, ultimately sleeping on a bench by Loch Ness. The next day, he caught a bus to meet up with his band mates in the next town on the tour, and on the way he wrote this marvelous song that captures the spirit of THE HOLLIES and THE KINKS. If it was an unfortunate experience for Colin, he’ll be happy to know [ Read more ]

It is not every day that there are new songs from ATTIC LIGHTS. That’s why it is a special pleasure to announce that very soon we will have a new album from the Scottish group, called “Love In The Time Of Shark Attacks”. And get ready everyone, because this album is full of pure melodic inspiration condensed into three-minute indie-pop songs. “Never By Myself” is the first advance release, in Digital Single format, for this upcoming album. The song is perfect pop with a solid verse, an impeccable chorus, fantastic vocal harmonies and which has its own rather peculiar story behind it. Colin wrote the song on a bus when he got lost and left behind after a concert in Inverness (Scotland). The rest of the band were so tired that they didn’t realize Colin wasn’t in the tour bus with them and they left for their next stop. Colin’s phone was out of battery and he spent the whole night wandering around the town, ultimately ending up sleeping on a bench by Loch Ness. The next day, he caught a bus to meet up with his band mates in the next town on the tour, and on the way,  he wrote this marvelous song that captures something of the youthful bounce of THE HOLLIES and the knowing lyricism of THE KINKS. It was an unfortunate experience for Colin but he’ll be happy to know that it resulted in one of the band’s best songs. The video for “Never By Myself” was directed by Iain Mutch, who has made other videos at Ele [ Read more ]

Elefant Records, in its constant search for new ideas and projects, is beginning a new collection of limited-edition Singles called “Reworked By Series”. The main idea is that groups on the Elefant label appropriate, play with, and remix each others’ songs. It’s an explosive mix that can create (and has, in fact, already created) really exciting cocktails. We’ve already got our hands on the first two releases from this collection, Guille Milkyway and LA CASA AZUL’s remake of ATTIC LIGHTS, and THE PRIMITIVES songs that MODULAR “perpetrated”. The Argentinian group MODULAR has once again created a cosmic, spacey world based on Paul Court’s guitars and Tracy Tracy’s vocals, making “Purifying Tone” and “Lose The Reason” theirs. And Guille does his thing, making a few new Eurodisco hits from “Future Bound” and “War Years”, two songs from the Scottish band fronted by Kevin Sherry.

Could you say the re-mixers have made their own songscategoría Almost, but also not at all. Those riffs, the vocals, the arrangements, and the melodies that belong to the original versions are special raw material, practically unprecedented, for the “re-constructors”, creating an alloy that is unprecedented, surprising, different, and most important of all, highly enjoyable. The Singles from this new adventure will be released in 500-copy limited-editions o [ Read more ]

The Scottish band continues to releasesome of the best songs from their second album, “Super Deluxe” (their first for Elefant Records), and this time they’re doing it with a new digital single that includes a surprising video. The chosen song for this occasion is “Orbison”, a tribute to the legendary singer Roy Orbison andone of those trademark Attic Lightssongs: romantic yearning, powerful guitars, addictive choruses and bursting withenergy. And we get a previously unreleased track as an extra gift, “Known Outsider”, on which ATTIC LIGHTS show us their more peaceful side, leaving the urgent electricity of the majority of their songs to one side and embracing a precious melody with deliciously unfolding guitar rhythms and an invigorating chorus.

And of course, the audiovisual element is full of pop culturereferences and homages to the great Roy Orbison, though, all of them, oddly enough, are indirect. We can enjoy a recreation of the turbulent scene from “Blue Velvet” (David Lynch) in which Dennis Hopper observes Dean Stockwell performingan androgynous interpretation of “In Dreams”. We also find scenes inspired by the sequence in “The Man Who Fell to Earth” (Nicholas Roeg) in which David Bowie channel-surfs while Roy Orbison’s“Blue Bayou” plays in the background. Also referenced arethe strange stories of Michael Kelly and [ Read more ]

We already told you the news when we put out the “Say You Love Me” single – the Scottish group ATTIC LIGHTS has a new album! After making themselves the best news to happen to pop music in recent years, now they’re releasing their second full-length album, “Super De Luxe,” on Elefant Records. Francis MacDonald (TEENAGE FANCLUB, NICE MAN) worked as a producer on the album, as did John McLaughlin, who has also produced groups like ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN and has worked with artists ranging from GLASSVEGAS to the very Lamont Dozier. Jim Langalso collaborated on the production work for the album and he made himself a fully entitled member of the group, led by Kev Sherry and Colin McArdle. And here we have it, with the same name as the jukebox that Tim Davidson, the group’s guitarist, has in his apartment. The jukebox has come to mean a lot to the group, a physical representation of nice, relaxing moments after the intense writing and recording sessions that went into the making of this incredible new album. It’s an energy boost, full of powerful guitars that push the limits with the vitality and the bright, luminous melodies that come from growing up in Glasgow.

“Say You Love Me” is the album’s opening track and is solid proof of all of the previously mentioned qualities. It opens the gates to the flood of potential singles the tremendously entertaining and easy-to-listen-to album is packed full of.&nb [ Read more ]

ATTIC LIGHTS were one of the biggest hits of 2008. Their singles, their videos, their songs grew from their native Glasgow and spread all over the world, until major labels were fighting to release the group’s first album, “Friday Night Lights.” It was finally released at the end of 2008 on Island Records, the company that has released albums by artists like THE B-52’S, John Cale, Nick Drake, THE ISLEY BROTHERS, and Ringo Starr, among many others. ATTIC LIGHTS received critical and popular acclaim, and toured all over the world. This past 2012 they signed with Elefant Records to release what will be their second album, “Super De Luxe,” but for now we’ve got this incredible advance single with four fantastic songs that make the power of their guitars crystal clear, especially when combined with their marvelous vocal harmonies and the solid choruses.

“Say You Love Me” is a perfect example of this. Forceful, epic guitars, full of pop spirit and the embodiment of distortion, euphoric, lifted by the excellent vocal melodies and a tremendous chorus – one of those songs that you find yourself humming a few minutes after hearing it for the first time &ndas [ Read more ]
