We are still amazed with the reception that “There’s Nothing But Pleasure”, the debut album from BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES, has had. The first edition in vinyl (1000 copies) sold out in just a few days, and the support it is receiving internationally on blogs and in magazines is really incredible. One of their songs, “5AM Empanada with You”, was included on the soundtrack for Netflix’s “Élite”. And we have the feeling that there are still many great things to come, that Andi and Kat still have so much to give us. And to celebrate all of this, we are releasing a video for one of the songs from that debut album, directed by Andi and Kat themselves.

“He Asked Me to Quit Smoking” maintains that mysterious, lazy, hazy, lysergic spirit that characterizes the album and that is accentuated in the video which emphasizes their nocturnal spirit (if not, what would they be doing looking for empanadas and fried chicken at 5 in the morningcategoría) that is both decadent and poetic at the same time, playing with cinematic textures. It’s so great to be able to discover a group bit by bit, figuring out who the artists are, learning the ins and outs of their sound, of their stage presence, of their style! And one of the most beautiful things for Elefant Records to discover in the last few months has been BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES, the duo formed by Andi and Kat. This process reached its peak a few weeks ago, in their first concerts in Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona, where the duo showed off their immense melancholy, their unequaled beauty, how exciting their music – with connections to bands like MAZZY STAR, COCTEAU TWINS, BEACH HOUSE, THE XX, GALAXIE 500 and CIGARETTES AFTER SEX – is. And a new peak is coming, because after summer they will release their first album, “There’s Nothing But Pleasure”. To start getting ready, we are bringing you this new single, “Leap”. It is a great example of their sound: fifties echoes, slide guitars, analog keyboard drones, arpeggios swollen with delays, hyper-precious melodies. This is what heartbreak sounds like.

And once again they show us that their music videos are absolutely marvelous. Directed by Davis Chang, “Leap” is a video like few others these days. It tells the story of mourning, of the hell it is to lose someone who used to be by your side, filmed with images that go from warm to cold, from beauty to pain. Amazing. BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES on Tour

The duo formed by Kat and Andi, who meet in New York and decide to make fragile, vaporous, lysergic, melancholic music, with echoes of MAZZY STAR, COCTEAU TWINS, THE XX, GALAXIE 500, Francis Laiand CIGARETTES AFTER SEX. In Spain, we are going to have the privilege to be the first to see them live. BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES have been some of the biggest news in recent years for Elefant Records, because they are practitioners of that sound we like so much and that so few people inhabit, but those who do tend to offer us marvelous musical experiences. At the end of March, they are going to be playing in Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona, touring with the songs from the four singles they have released so far – songs as marvelous as “5AM Empanada With You” and “Santa Monica”, and even some new songs that will be included on their first full-length album with Elefant. Songs recorded in their apartment in New York and mixed by Anthony “Rocky” Gallo (Norah Jones, Cat Power, THE XX, CIGARETTES AFTER SEX, THE KILLERS, THE CLIENTELE…) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, David Bowie, TAME IMPALA, ARCADE FIRE, St. Vincent, PERFUME GENIUS, BLONDIE, Aretha Franklin and a very long etc).

We are still discovering songs (this is the fourth already) from this marvelous project born in New York called BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES, which takes us reminiscent landscapes that bring “Levitating” to life in the most nostalgic way.

Kat and Andi continue to take us on a dreamy journey with slow-motion melodies, vintage synth, ethereal vocals, and ultimately to a secret cosmopolitan night walk with Liz — their latest single, where they once again play with nocturnal nostalgia and that surreal, dreamlike feeling. This is all corroborated by the exquisite video filmed by Xinyi Zhu, an LA-based director originally from China who was recently recognized for her short film, “Kindling”, in the Palm Springs International Shortfest and the Houston International Film Festival. With Eva Zhao’s magnetic presence, we journey through the night of Shanghai, among the lights, neon, chiaroscuros, hidden corners, smiles, velvet… It is an experiment in visual poetry, urban expressionism, and it is the perfect match for BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES’s music.

When Kat and Andi moved to New York city, their bedroom became the place where they created BUBBLE TEA AND CIGARETTES, a project that looks for an intimate connection with the listener: melancholy, nostalgia, evocation and immensely beautiful melodies. Here at Elefant, we adore slow-paced dream-pop, and we are excited to announce that the band has joined the label and, after the summer, will release their first album.

Before this song we are bringing you today, they have released two Digital Singles. Their first song was “5AM Empanada With You”, which came out on July 31, 2020, and it was the song that started it all. It was a typically Friday night under the influence, but a melodic idea suddenly struck Andi at 3 am while walking on the street. The couple rushed back home and recorded the melody with the guitar which became the intro of the song. They added some MIDI drums and bass, and it immediately sounded so good that they started slow dancing to it for the entire night. Then they went outside to buy some empanadas and the sky started turning bright. From then on, everything flowed. It became a song reflecting the summertime memories about lost love that set the scene for the melancholic slow ballad, drifting between dreaminess and nostalgia, fantasy and the purest, most beautiful emotion.
