About a year ago, we released the eponymous album from COUR DE RÉCRÉ as part of our New Adventures In Pop collection, and we were just enamored with the freshness and ease of Quentin, Stan and Chloé and their synthesized electronic pop with francophone legacies. That album closed with the song, “À L’ombre D’une Jeune Fille En Pierre”, a track that begins with a bucolic, melancholy melody and ends up mutating into an exquisite exercise in disco-funk, guided by Chloé’s delicate voice. It tells the story of a girl who falls in love with a statue, for the simple fact that it will never be able to return her love. This is reflected in the video that is being released along with this single, where in the first part we see Chloé in a garden with the starring statue, and then it jumps to a nighttime ambiance the better represents the darkest desires.

“New Adventures In Pop” collection [Issue 053]

We love that daring way of living so much, that lifestyle that is constantly pushing the limits while searching for freedom and happiness that only a very few young, fresh groups are able to give us. We have already seen that COUR DE RÉCRÉ is in their element in that way of living, and now it is time to celebrate their first, eponymous full-length album, which shows us all the aspects of their intelligent and fun work. And above all, it plays up that “joie de vivre” that is such an intrinsic part of our French neighbors.

The road that has led us here, though it may not seem like it, has been long. COUR DE RÉCRÉ started out as Stan and Héloïse’s band. They built a project, with him in Avignon and her in Santiago de Chile, about distance and separation. Soon, Quentin, a friend of Stan’s, joined the project, and soon thereafter Chloé stepped in for Heloïse in live shows, and then later in studio recordings. But stability doesn’t seem to be their thing, and Stan went to live in Canada for two years, which didn’t stop them from putting out their first release, the EP “Éponyme”, in 2018. In 2019 Stan went back to Avignon, but Chloé moved to Paris. Distance is clearly in the group’s genes. After all this mileage, we have finally arrived at this album, full of inspiration and irresistible pop m [ Read more ]

It doesn’t seem like distance has been a problem for COUR DE RÉCRÉ. The trio formed by Stan, Quentin and Chloé, based in France, is giving us a new advance single, while letting us know about the imminent arrival of their first LP as part of our new talent collection, “New Adventures In Pop”. And while we are waiting for that to come, we can enjoy this “Agathe, Agathe”, a new show of their fast-paced, lively, eclectic and unpredictable electronic pop. The song plays with catchy melodies and winds up giving us impossible developments. Metallic synthesizers and fast drum machines. Sonic parameters that are special and all their own but are also perfectly aligned with a new French scene that is full of vintage digital sounds put together with imagination and grace, like CLIO, ASCENDANT VIERGE, THE PIROUETTES, VIDEOCLUB and PÉPITE, among many others.

But the group’s pronounced personality is not only evident in their sound; it is also in their esthetic. We already saw this in their previous video “Vice Et Werther”, but here they take it up a notch. 3D animation with a vintage spirit, provocative, abounding in so many sensations that it can make you feel hopeful and bewildered, beauty and desperation, fragility and strength. It is a challenge in which the digital artist Antoine_Josset places the avatars for our musicians in a room where dancing gives way to imaginative, unpredict [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Vice Et Werther

COUR DE RÉCRÉ is a French group that is somehow a product of our times. The trio formed by Stan, Quentin and Chloe have found themselves obligated, for life’s many vicissitudes, to continue working on their songwriting online. Bytes of their songs have travelled to Avignon, Santiago de Chile, Canada, Toulouse and Paris. But after several years of intense activity on SoundCloud, and an EP (“Éponyme”) released in December 2018, they are going to take their next steps with Elefant Records.

And what better than our collection for new talent, “New Adventures In Pop”, to give shelter to some songs that dive into a bizarre, eclectic synth-pop, with touches of acid and, according to Stan himself, influences coming from Romain Guerret (DONDOLO, ALINE), LA MONJA ENANA and FREEZEPOP (he has been listening to so many Elefant albums since he was really young), THE PIROUETTES and DENIM. What we have here is a first taste of what will be their first Mini-LP with Elefant. And what a taste it is. “Vice Et Werther” is a twist on the story by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, but this time, Werther’s partner leaves him because of the excessive closeness with his best friend, and accepts the situation with the thought that “a friend is something very important in life, while love is just child’s play”. And this baroque story does not change the fact that this song is made to be d [ Read more ]
