We have big news for fans of that very special duo formed by Anna Fredriksson and Elena Comas. DIE KATAPULT are reuniting for a performance in the Scenica festival in Sicily on May 12, and are simultaneously releasing two Digital Singles, with two different songs produced by Ian Catt (SAINT ETIENNE, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, THE FIELD MICE, SHAMPOO, THE SCHOOL…), and two different album covers.

The first is “Waschmaschine” which dives right into their catalog of pedagogical songs: step by step instructions to learn how to use the washing machine, with the approval of Karl BartosFlorian Schneider and everything that at some point had something to do with KRAFTWERK and robots. Even Isaac Asimov would give his blessing to an exercise like this. Have you ever imagined dancing disco while doing the laundrycategoría Well, if you haven’t then you clearly have a problem. Thank goodness we have DIE KATAPULT to solve it. That problem and all the others too.

The second is “Mücken”, probably one of the craziest songs never released by the band, insistent, martial, moshable, with the buzz of a mosquito included. How many choruses have you heard that cry “Hay que fumigar / Sin pesticidas” (We need to fumigate / Without pesticides)categoría A cry for environmentalism. And with an exquisitely fun melody.

This coming October 20th, the film festival Mostra de Valencia will open with the Valencian film “El Que Sabem”, produced by Pegatum Transmedia and directed by Jordi Núñez, author of the shorts “Píxeles” (with more than 11 million views on streaming), “Amor De Dios” and “Cachitos”. It is a daring generational portrait about a story of first love, acceptance, and forgiveness, dressed up as a hymn to friendship, desire and the youth that slips through our hands. It is a movie in which, according to the people who made it, “music plays a fundamental role in building emotions and feelings, whether it’s to intensify them or to fill them with irony”. A large part of the movie’s soundtrack consists of songs by groups from Elefant Records.

DIE KATAPULT continue giving us the capsules that comprise their first album “DKXD”. This time, we have the song that closes the album, one of the most special songs from their debut: “Für Einen Moment”. This song alternates between electronic martial tones in a Teutonic key that the album is full of, with innocent and dazzling pop choruses. This, together with their iconoclastic universe, has led to an absolutely tremendous video, directed by Xoxé Tétano (of LOS GANGLIOS, and who has already directed videos for the duo). In the video, a priest represents the Catholic church in its fight against alcoholism, which is represented by Anna and Elena themselves. This pep talk is mixed with anthropology and chemistry classes, and proof of the acts carried out by our protagonists in the most Castilian bar you can imagine. All of this comes together to give us an absolutely brilliant visual conglomerate. There are no words to describe it. This is an absolutely imperative ingredient to complete the very unique and groundbreaking work of DIE KATAPULT. Come on in and have a look.

Until now, synth-pop and electro-pop have been most frequently characterized by the description of a dystopian world full of machines, starting with the style’s precursors, KRAFTWERK. But that future, one way or the other, is already here. That is why Elena Comas (bass and vocals; also in NELEONARD) and Anna Fredriksson (synths, rhythms, vocals and vocoder, also in LOS GANGLIOS), who are otherwise known as DIE KATAPULT, have decided to bear witness and write the first full length, “DKXD”. It is a digital, mechanized world, entrenched in an inconsistent and disconcerting idiosyncrasy, which they have used with an extremely intelligent mix of surrealism, dadaism, humor and cheekiness.

To the beat of Google Translator, they propose a sonic journey around Europe in every sense possible: linguistically (they sing in German, French, English, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, and even Japanese), musically (the influences coming through belong to all the pop traditions of the old continent: LIO, DAFT PUNK, the already mentioned KRAFTWERK, AVIADOR DRO, TELEX, LADYTRON, Franco Battiato…). To achieve all of this, they have had the help of none other than Ian Catt (SAINT ETIENNE, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, THE FIELD MICE, SHAMPOO, THE SCHOOL…) on production. And the result couldn’t be more fun and exciting. And of course, it is also tremendously danceable.

But don’t think there is some kind of overarching concept here or anything like that, with the overwh [ Read more ]

DIE KATAPULT is the Spanish-Swedish fusion of Elena Comas (bass guitar and voice) and Anna Fredriksson (synths, rhythms, voice and vocoder). Four years have passed since we released their debut Mini-LP "Kristall Reinheit” in our collection "New Adventures In Pop" (in delicious white colour vinyl). In the years since Anna and Elena have been preparing with great care and attention-to-detail the songs that will make up their new work. The songs have been cooked over a low heat and in their preparation they've had a luxury producer, Ian Catt (SAINT ETIENNE, THE FIELD MICE, SHAMPOO, THE SCHOOL, ALPACA SPORTS…) with whom the band have formed an exceptional partnership for what will be their imminent debut LP "DKXD" and from which we now present the first Single: "Bäckerei Digital" ("Digital Bakery") an immediate hit that is in some ways reminiscent of Italo disco.

By the end of 2019 you’d be forgiven for thinking we were living in a dystopian world full of machines that automate the process of making items that were formerly handmade. You can even find baguette vending machines in French villages. But DIE KATAPULT have created a digital bakery where they are the ones dominating “The Machine”. Restless and backlit pastry chefs who give free reign to creativity and provide their party guests with delectablepieces of cake. Those who take a bite will soon find themselves floating and dancing.

A quick listen to the debut Mini-LP by DIE KATAPULT quickly places this duo in the outskirts of Berlin. The war-like quality of their sound and the roughness would make us think so, but if we pay just a little more attention, there are melodies that don’t fit in so easily with that profile, and there are small sparks of a sonic, acidic, dirty sense of humor that promises that there is something more going on here. If we look at the credits on this this 10”, 500-print limited-edition, white vinyl, we understand the secret of this new New Adventures In Pop release. DIE KATAPULT is a Spanish-Swedish duo based in the Sants neighborhood of Barcelona, formed by Anna Fredriksson (vocals, vocoder, and keyboards, and also of LOS GANGLIOS) and Elena Comas (voice and bass, and also of NELEONARD). And we’ve had to coin a new term to define their music: Mediterranean kraut-pop.

But let’s take this one step at a time, or better said, one song at a time. “Braun” is the color of humbleness, of opening, of KRAFTWERK playing in the background, and why not, of OVIFORMIA SCI making their presence felt in the attitude.

“Schweinsteiger” could jump right onto a STEREO TOTAL album; the lyrics are full of references to Bayern Münich’s midfielder, but above all it has an impressive kraut force, somewhere between bizarre and solemn. “Kristall Reinheit” puts a little twist on things, bathing itself in dub rhythms, and clearing [ Read more ]
