Polar Communication

In 1993, a handful of scientists from the “Independent Corporation” were able to clone the two most radical members of this enigmatic collective.  Joako and Luis were created to accomplish a very special mission – to spread the word about independent music as an alternative to the increasingly well-positioned commercial products run by the “Multinational Forces”. With the help of some other clones, they were sent beyond the universe to the Polar Station, in a kind of time-leap into the future, so that they could, using the Alfa satellite, begin a series of secret broadcasts aimed at the earth and other planets outside of the earth’s solar system on the program “Viaje A Los Sueños Polares” (Journey to Polar Dreams). The program was created to offer musical alternatives to earthlings who were interested in such things and who were unhappy with the growing commercial music. The Polar Station was playing its part, and for more than 10 years it developed an important fan-base on earth and other planets that helped spread the ideals of the “Independent Corporation”; they were known as “The Polar Travelers”, beings who developed innovative qualities focused on personal satisfaction and planning processes.  [ Read more ]

On our Elefant Records profile on Spotify we’re going to make lists with some of our favorite songs. It will include both Elefant songs and songs by other artists and labels that we like and that have accompanied us throughout the years; songs that have been like a sound track to our daily work in the Elefant offices. Each list will include 40 songs that inspire our days and that we want to share with you so you can enjoy our groups and the spirit of our label in a new way. We’ll have surprises and special guests to help us enhance this collection of pachydermic playlists.

On our Spotify page, you can sign up for different kinds of lists: There are changing lists that are updated with new things from the Elefant label, where you can find out about all the new albums we’re putting out. There’s a New Adventures in Pop list where you can discover and listen to all the new groups that have released (or are going to release) their songs on our collection. There are set lists like the one from 2012 where you can listen to all the releases on our label from 2012 – and in the order they were released…! Luis Calvo y Montse Santalla son dos personajes imprescindibles en el mundo del pop español de las últimas décadas. Llevan casi 25 años al frente de Elefant Records el sello donde han grabado desde Family a La Casa Azul pasando por Carlos Berlanga, Cooper o Nosotrash. Han escrito fanzines, creado la revista Espiral; montaron junto a los hermanos Morán la sala de conciertos Maravillas o el festival de Benicassim. En la Cadena 40 pusieron en pie el programa de radio Viaje a los sueños polares que también tuvo su versión televisiva. Hoy vienen de invitados al programa de Ordovás para pinchar unos discos, contarnos sus cosas y anunciar que a partir de octubre los tendremos aquí en Radio Gladys Palmera haciendo su mítico “Viaje a los sueños polares”.Playlist:1. Queridos Luis y Montse,

No nos conocemos, pero para mí sois como esos profesores que te dejan huella y que recordarás siempre. Sí que os he visto en festivales, vendiendo vuestros discos o en alguna fiesta en Siroco. Pero como buen fan tímido jamás se me ocurriría acercarme a dar la brasa. Lo he hecho con otros, pero debe ser que los respeto menos.

Os escribo esta carta para daros las gracias. Acabo de recibir la reedición en vinilo de “Un soplo en el corazón”, ese disco tan de culto que ya se ha convertido en un cliché decir que es el disco de tu vida, pero que sin duda ha educado musical y sentimentalmente a media escena indie, al menos a aquellos que pasamos los 30. Tan de culto es, que ya empiezan a aparecer las voces en contra, aquellos Indies Verdaderos que no soportan los mitos más allá de sus propias habitaciones, esas personas grises que gustan de ladrar cuando algo se escapa de su pequeña cápsula de conocimiento exclusivo. Bien por vosotros, bien por Family y mucho mejor para todos. Cuanto más Family, mejor.

The summer festival season is almost upon us and we’re closing out the spring with one last party before summer vacations. It has been a year of huge concerts for Elefant Club, with the series at Sala Siroco, and we wanted to finish things up with a bang, this coming July 7th. To begin with, the performances will be run, on the one hand, by Laetitia Sadier, the singer of STEREOLAB and MONADE, who, after her marvelous and highly-regarded solo debut, has a new album, “Silencio”, which will be released at the end of July and will have its opening concert in our Club. On this new album she has worked once again with Tim Gane, her inseparable and fundamental partner from their seminal band. On the other hand, SINGLE will also be debuting a new release – the album “Anexo”. It will be an exclusive, limited edition that shows Ibon and Teresa doing precisely very special and intimate versions of their songs. This is a double-headliner that we are tremendously proud of. After the concerts, Laetitia Sadier will handle the DJ session, and she’ll be spinning and showing us her good taste and her elegance when it comes to choosing pop melodies. And to really top things off, another appealing DJ, Luis Elefant, will fill us up with another one of his delicious sessions.

After a brief pause in April because of Easter week, Elefant Club is back with a new, huge party in Siroco club. Three groups that represent Elefant’s current musical line-up and one famous DJ will get on stage and make sure everyone has an unforgettable night, like they’ve done in previous editions of Elefant Club.

 COLA JET SET are more than just Elefant’s current music. They are one of the groups who best represent the recent history of our label, and who are currently doing promotion for their new English-language single “Listen and repeat” at important international events like the Glasgow Popfest (UK) or the NYC Popfest (USA), where they will also perform a semi-acoustic concert to introduce their new line-up: Ana, the group’s vocalist, is leaving, as is Estel, the group’s other bassist; both want to focus more on their careers and their families. In their place, Alicia will step in as the lead vocalist, without leaving behind her guitar and keyboards. This concert will be a special occasion that will include new songs as well as part of their old repertoire. LOS BONSÁIS will perform in our club for the second time, to present new songs and their second video, “Temporal”. Luis Elefant [DJ Polar] aka Luis Calvo, hence Luis Calvo aka Luis Elefant [DJ Polar]. One wouldn't exist without the other, of course, and viceversa. Luis Calvo started spinning records and growing a passion for music, and Luis Elefant [DJ Polar] took the flame and kept on djing and spreading the best recordings in pop music whilst his alter ego became one of the most important persons in the last fifteen years of the Spanish independent scene.

Luis Calvo is the founder and director of indie record label Elefant Records, one of the most respected and renown independent pop record companies in and outside Spain (its records reach such important markets as Japan, the United Kingdom or Taiwan, and are distributed to many other countries). He was also founder and codirector of the internationally known Benicàssim Festival, which he nurtured and helped become an unavoidable date in the international summer listings. He founded and directed music monthly magazine Spiral, and for more than ten years he was the host and DJ on his own radio show "Viaje a los sueños polares", broadcasted nationwide via Los 40 Principales, the most important commercial music station in Spain.

On March 3rd we have the “Mad Madrid 5×25” party, where 5 groups from the capital city will play for 25 minutes each, with a range of groups from established ones that have already put out albums, like BLA, to Belén and Luis from L-KAN’s parallel project, to others that will soon form part of our “New Adventures in Pop” collection – as is the case with TEACHER TEACHER (a super new band formed by María(CHARADES), Cristina (WILD HONEY) y Guille (WILD HONEY, THE MITTENS) – and including some who already form a part of that collection, like ULTRANOL, BAND À PART and CAPITÁN SUNRISE. Some of the best representations of the new pop being made in Madrid, who can ensure that it will be a special, magical night, where surprises abound. And there will be DJs to finish off the party on the highest note possible.

Song: Los Chicos Hoy Saltarán A La Pista (LA CASA AZUL)

It took many months of work but we can finally announce, with much joy and satisfaction, the release of “L-FUN 45 (Summer of love)”, the first independent musical videogame for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, a fun application that will get all of the label’s fans excited. The videogame is full of the Elefant universe and our groups. It was created and developed by Dolores Entertainment, a young and promising company that develops mobile phone applications and videogames, and that shares Elefant’s spirit of independent work and passion for music. Dolores Entertainment, who recently celebrated their first anniversary as a company, started their voyage with more classic-styled games with a more direct dynamic, like “Vectron” or “Spanish Chiringuito”. Now, they are official providers for TV3 and they are working on some different, very interesting projects that we’ll be hearing about soon, but L-FUN 45 is their most ambitious project so far.

L-FUN 45 is an interactive musical, a game where the music isn’t just an excuse to smash buttons, but instead it tells us a love story. The love story begins with a break-up, and includes friendship and summertime adventures. The last night in 2011 programmed for Elefant Club will be on December 3rd, with performances by FITNESS FOREVER and PAPA TOPO, culminating the evening with these same artists as guest DJs, along with Luis Elefant. It will be a new chance to see Carlos Valderrama’s group after the marvelous summer hit single, “Con Fitness Forever En La Playa,” and the captivating performance in this year’s Lemon Pop Festival. We must not forget to mention the charming participation of two national icons which leave rivers of admiration behind them: Adrià and Paulita. The complete renovation of the mythical venue Siroco is big news. The venue is located on San Dimas, 3 in the legendary quarter of Malasaña in Madrid, an area which has always been a symbol and reflection of the music scene in the capital city. We are ecstatic to announce that in October, Elefant Club will be born inside of this distinguished environment. The first Saturday of each month we are organizing special nights where we can enjoy live acts and special guest DJs with set-lists filled with various pop gems, starting at 9:30 p.m. and ending at 3:00 a.m.

The inauguration will take place on October 1st with live acts from the Welsh group, THE SCHOOL, the duet from Madrid, BAND À PART. THE SCHOOL has been recording their new album this past summer and we are sure they are going to present a promising set with the inclusion of these new songs from their second album, along with some of their hits from their last album, “Loveless Unbeliever.” BAND À PART has been one of the best groups to come out of the Contempopránea Festival this year and their performance at the Indietrack Festival in England was an event in itself. Special guest DJs for this evening include Guille Milkyway and Luis Elefant.
