To speak of Ibon Errazkin is to speak of big things. Not just because of his impeccable trajectories as a musician (AVENTURAS DE KIRLIAN, LE MANS, SINGLE, his solo work, and so much more) and as a producer (Carlos Berlanga, NOSOTRÄSH, CORAZÓN, ANA D…). Because each step in his career has been personal, distinctive, always pushing the category of music as art, and questioning the value of the word “art” itself. All at the same time. That’s why his universe is different. That’s why “Foto Aérea”, his new album, deserves its own special commentary.

But before we start with that special commentary, let’s put things into context. Ibon’s career has always mixed that touch of personality with a certain level of experimentation. That isn’t too far off from this new album, in a way, but the general air of the album is more classic. Whycategoría Because melody is king here, roaming freely through the various songs on the album, transforming, appearing and disappearing, following its own wishes and whims. Melody that tastes like the sea and the breeze. This is where the breaking point comes. Among all the instruments, there is a song being sung – the first one that Ibon sings in his entire career. What’s more, it’s a cover, a delicacy with touches of Broadway and lounge, written by Jerome Moross for the musical “The Golden Apple” in 1954: “Lazy Afternoon”.  [ Read more ]

We have already said so many things about Ibon Errazkin… A musician who has been a fundamental part of groups like AVENTURAS DE KIRLIAN, LE MANS and SINGLE, who has worked as a producer on albums for ANA D, NOSOTRÄSH (that inimitable “Popemas”), CORAZÓN, Carlos Berlanga… And who has developed, in parallel, his own unique path, incomparable, free from any constriction or prejudice… A MUSICIAN like this, in all caps, who is bigger than every adjective. That’s why having new material of his own making is a cause for celebration for all music lovers, in all its shapes and forms. Because those of us who know him know that each new thing that comes from this Basque musician can come from the most unpredictable place.

In this case, this Double Single comprising the songs “Foto Aérea” and “Las Descripciones” (dedicated to Josetxo Anitua, the singer from CANCER MOON) takes us to a peculiar place that is almost unexplored by Ibon: music without defined rhythmic patterns, composed of melodies that appear and disappear, repeating themselves even in different songs, the same way you can find in the dub world, and above all, in music for movies. But you can also find this in art, like when a painter decides to use the same theme over and over again, maybe at different times of the day or of the year. That is what is so peculiar about what this Single is doing, and what it is revealing about what wil [ Read more ]

If there is an artist in Spain (and we dare say in the world) who is capable of reinventing pop music's language, that is SINGLE. And this is no easy exaggeration. Teresa Iturrioz, ex bassist and lyricist in cult avant-pop band LE MANS, has proved in her two first EP's as a solo artist ("Honey" and "Su recuerdo") her ability to create, with the help of her producer Ibon Errazkin, an original sound of her own, absolutely modern and yet with huge commercial appeal, based on an exceptional flair to choose the best from the most diverse origins: reggae and country-pop, R&B, synth-pop and hip-hop, following the path (and going much farther beyond) from where LE MANS left it with their fabulous farewell trilogy.

And at least the moment has arrived when we can make the bells toll and announce as loud as we can the release of SINGLE's long player debut: next November 14th Elefant Records will put out "Pío Pío", an album featuring fifteen songs of unusual, mysterious beauty, produced by Ibon Errazkin and written in its entirety (except for a cover version of 70's flamenco duo Lole y Manuel) by Teresa and Ibon. The cover is, as usual, a new hit by Spanish cult designer Javier Aramburu, which joins the short but stunningly beautiful collection of cover artworks, pictures and illustrations he has been designing for SINGLE since her debut. Juan Carlos Bracho is a young, upcoming artist from Andalusia. He’s won several prizes, and his work has been shown in ARCO 2006, the important art fair in Madrid. His relation with Elefant and LE MANS comes from the title of one of his most celebrated pieces: "Catástrofe nº17", inspired in the song which also gave title to the singles compilation by LE MANS. With this piece he won in 2005 the Purificación García photography contest. [ Read more ]

LE MANS’ music has an important role, along with big names as those of Salinger and Truffaut, in the new short film by Argentinian director Paulo Pécora. “Siemprenunca” (“Alwaysnever”, 2005) is a 12-minute short movie, filmed in Super 8 (colour and black and white) and 16mm. (black and white) written, directed and produced by Pécora as a visual poem.“Siemprenunca” is a collage with words, music and emotions, which describes in an oniric, metaphoric way the sentimental misadventures of its main character: a young man confused by the blurry souvenirs of a love that never actually existed. The film approaches this lack of love in an unconventional way, becoming a cinematic puzzle, the pieces of which could be placed in a thousand different ways, according to the emotions they provoke in each different viewer. In this sense, “Siemprenunca” includes images taken from other three short films by the author, some excerpts from his short story "Dinosaurios", footage from the film "Los mocosos" (“Les mistons”, 1958), by French director François Truffaut (who meets again the LE MANS universe after the cover version recently released by SINGLE of the title track of his movie “L’amour en fuite”), excerpts of some songs by LE MANS, and words from the short story "A perfect day for banana fish", by American cult writer JD Salinger. In 2006 "Siemprenunca&qu [ Read more ]

Last year, Elefant Records started an ambitious campaign in order to reissue LE MANS’ full discography, an idea that started actually by the end of 2003 with the release of the singles compilation “Catástrofe nº17”. With this renewal operation, the band’s many fans will be able to enjoy the full recorded legacy of one of the best and most innovative bands to ever come out from Spain, and one of the most respected elsewhere, with new cover artwork, digipak format, new designs by Spanish cult designer Javier Aramburu and revised and remastered sound, courtesy of Xavier Alarcón. Deluxe editions for proud collectors.

Now we are glad to release at least the two last pieces of the puzzle: if last year we reissued “Aquí vivía yo” and “Saudade”, fourth and third albums by LE MANS respectively, in october 2005 the countdown is over with the reissues of “Entresemana” and “Le Mans”, the two albums that gave birth to a myth which had already been hinted with the legendary album by AVENTURAS DE KIRLIAN (the band’s previous project). With these four albums, LE MANS forged a well-deserved legend which took them to release their records in countries such as Japan, United States or Argentina, as well as to feature their songs in the most varied compilations from all over the world.

In 1999, British weekly magazine New Musical Express published a dossier on European pop on which they [ Read more ]

In February this year we released “Honey”, the debut single by SINGLE: three heart throbbing songs where Teresa Iturrioz started anew after her years fronting the magic pop of a cult band like LE MANS, opening a new adventure no less suggestive and mysterious. Now we proudly present “Su recuerdo”, the follow up to that fantastic debut single. Three new songs by SINGLE, where Teresa maintains the high standards reached by her lyrics, and a production work which balances again between the electronic and the acoustic, creating a slice of soft and elegant pop.

The beautiful cover artwork has been conceived once again by Spanish design star Javier Aramburu, and once again the graphic artist finds the perfect image to match the contents of the record – this time a mysterious picture of Teresa.

The record opens with “El amor en fuga”, a cover version of the theme tune written by Alain Souchon and Laurent Voulzy for François Truffaut‘s eponymous movie (“L’amour en fuite”, “Love on the run”, 1979): a cinematic track featuring baroque string arrangements and a nutty piano that stumbles upon the electronic beats. “Llévame a dormir” has a country-pop feel which is also present in “Su recuerdo”, the song that gives the record its title but paradoxically means its end.

Great news for the world’s soft-pop lovers, SINGLE is back with three new samples of her genius. We [ Read more ]

Japanese label Rambling Records, which released in Japan NIZA’s “Canciones de temporada”, is well known and respected by its excellent editions of soundtracks (of such geniuses as Ennio Morricone), as well as deluxe compilations in diverse styles as easy listening or international pop. In fact, Rambling has used plenty times many songs from the Elefant catalogue for its compilations.

Since last year, Elefant and Rambling have started a collaboration which reflects in a series of compilations based in songs taken from Elefant’s big catalogue, chosen by both Rambling Records and ourselves. In 2004 came out “Amapola”, a compilation of quiet, relaxed atmosphere, which was very well received in Japan. In july this year, making the most of our visit to Japan for the Elefant parties with NIZA and LA CASA AZUL, Rambling will release a new reference on this series of compilations: “Candy Box”, in a much poppier and melodic style.

The tracklists from both compilations are as follow:

CANDY BOX01. Si me alejaste [ENTRE RÍOS]02. I love my Jean [CAMERA OBSCURA]03. Ups to you [ANNA & THE SPECTORS]04. Parasol [NIZA]05. Una mañana [ME ENVENENO DE AZULES]06.
