They don’t accept definitions or labels. They play at misleading so well that we all know they aren’t interested in that. They are real. Authentic. They are radically different than any other group you know. That’s why their new single is going to blow you away (again). It is a cover of AMARAL’s “Sin ti no soy nada” taken to the range of audio experimentation, where frequencies twist together and the rhythm creates a sonic trance somewhere between industrial music and Ibiza nights. As if Björk decided to remake Chrissie Hynde songs. That’s where the musical extasy lies, the catharsis, the freedom and the love. And no, this isn’t about deconstructing or about posturing. Javier and Carlos went into this cover with this position: “Covering “Sin ti no soy nada” is an exercise in nostalgia and adaptation of one of our earliest references, revisiting a classic that is emotional, fragile and powerful through the way it experiments with sound”. This song was played a major role in their concerts in 2022, and which ultimately, after the response it received, has turned into this new single. We will never get tired of saying it: INTERROGACIÓN AMOR is a rara avis, an exception, an infinite quantic accident on the music scene. We need them. After a period of change, Carlos and Javier made up for lost time with that powerful and brutally honest album, “cómo un ángel podría romper mi corazón” (2022). They’re back now with a new Digital Single, “Fortuna”, which the band themself produced this time, and with mixing by Pablo Cuerno – DJ HATER (a Los Invernaderos resident), who had already collaborated with them on their previous album. And they take it a bit more to the extreme this time. It has an industrial sound, almost digi-core, desperate lyrics, from a person who is out of luck and addicted to his own misfortune. INTERROGACIÓN AMOR’s music continues to get more radical, and, above all, if we look back, it continues to stand out as a rara avis on the international scene. Everything is a lie. The immediacy. The smiles on Instagram. Happiness as the right choice. It’s all fake. We are tormented by our doubts, our fears. That’s why listening to INTERROGACIÓN AMOR is like putting some drops in your eyes, taking of your glasses, and letting your eyes go out of focus. Carlos and Javier’s youth, their clairvoyance, is, let’s just say it, insulting. “cómo un ángel podría romper mi corazón”, their new album, and the first with their new line-up as a duo, works on so many levels. Like a winding, abstract path between musical styles, some kind of post-modern treaty on sound, capable of passing for folk, noise, avant-garde, trip-hop, jungle, digicore, synth-pop or punk, without even blinking. It also works as a poetic exercise with a wide-open heart, with no prejudices, powerful and rough around the edges, full of unwholesome irony and unforgettable lines. But probably the most attractive thing is its slippery quality. INTERROGACIÓN AMOR have something indescribable. Fascinating. Each of the songs we have heard from the new album comes from different musical parameters, but all hide something dark, mysterious, something that makes listening to them a tremendously attractive challenge, something almost sick. “una manera perfecta de morir”, the third single from the incipient “cómo un ángel podría romper mi corazón”, begins somewhere between whiny folk and trip-hop, between BECK, PORTISHEAD, UNKLE and SPOON, to slice through the shadows alongside THE XX. It is simultaneously a poetic and disturbing journey, somewhere between love and death, with a tragic spirit and hazy structure, maintaining a pop essence from the shadows, sliding between styles almost unconsciously. A few weeks ago, we gave you the advance of “NADA!”, the sonic (and structural) twist the new trajectory of INTERROGACIÓN AMOR has taken. And Carlos and Javier are still riding the wave of the explosion of prolific creativity, because they are giving us a new single, “el amor está en el aire”, and are letting us know about their new album called “cómo un ángel podría romper mi corazón” which will reach stores this coming June. On this new single, the second advance from this highly anticipated new album, our protagonists continue to play with eighties synth-pop concepts that they use with intelligence and imagination. So many things come to mind when we read the title of the song. And then we hear: “El amor está en el aire y yo me voy a ahogar” (Love is in the air and I’m going to drown). And then we see the cover (designed once again by Pablo Aragón) and we see a hand, holding a still-burning cigarette, buried among stones. And we know it’s them, without a doubt. All of this is done with elegant, silky, sumptuous arrangements, with a change of key included, in the best tradition of the great Broadway composers, but with a melody that shows off the best bedroom pop references, in two minutes of pure exquisiteness, that puts them back at the top of the list of current electronic pop artists. TRACKLIST: 01 NADA!

The diptych formed by “mariposas y vómito” and “vómito y mariposas” were destined to be cult classics and legends, and to make INTERROGACIÓN AMOR an unforgettable event on the national independent pop panorama, and that is exactly what happened. They are a rara avis that are now going through a transformation. This transformation is ultimately confirmation that this story is not ending here, and that there is still so much more to say. Now a duo, this new single, “NADA!”, marks a new era for Carlos and Javier, as the first advance from the second album from the INTERROGACIÓN AMOR project. It is the starting shot, a cry to the heavens for rebellion and a statement of intentions. Because as soon as you press play you realize that so much has changed.

This time the work is happening in the studio (they chose to work at El Invernadero) and we find ourselves listening to a dark, direct synth-pop that moves progressively into post-punk and noise. The coproduction work of DJ HATER (an El Invernadero resident, who has worked with groups like BAYWAVES, MEGANSITO EL GUAPO, MORI and IRENEGARRY) was key to this sound – he is a dilettante activist for urban sounds and with a style strongly marked by internet culture. They are one of the more personal projects to come out of Madrid in a long time. Somehow, they are the heirs to that tradition of mixing risk, vanguard sound and pop melodies, with a taste for a specific esthetic and an artistic spirit that has marked bands like KRAFTWERK, THE RESIDENTS, STEREOLAB, OVIFORMIA SCI, Björk, PORTISHEAD, Ela Minus, DÉCIMA VÍCTIMA, Arca and so many others. That’s why we wanted their debut album to have a physical release in line with the esthetic and musical content. INTERROGACIÓN AMOR’s first album, “vómito y mariposas”, came out on September 16, 2020, when they were still a quartet formed by Yolanda Martín, Daniel Salgado, Carlos Martínez and Javier Sanz. One year later, the project has taken a turn, with just Carlos and Javier on board, and the end of the era confirmed with the release of “mariposas y vómito”, an album that is a sort of reaction to the original, where all of the songs from the original are revised with the help of special guests like SHEGO, DANI, Valdivia, LISASINSON and GINEBRAS. Last year, “vómito y mariposas” was released – the debut album by on of the most promising bands on the national scene, INTERROGACIÓN AMOR. We are releasing this album on vinyl now, just one year after its official release. At the beginning of 2021, the band simplified its format to just Carlos Martínez and Javier Sanz in charge, leaving behind an album that is destined to be an object of worship. Far from moving on, 2021 is bringing us a new INTERROGACIÓN AMOR album, although from a very special lens: this is a revision of the songs that comprised that first step, with the collaboration of some very special travel companions who dress the songs up in radically new ways.
