MELL ALLEN doesn´t like too much talking about his music. In his interviews, he rambles on old Spectrum videogames, trashy Tv talkshows or anything that passes through his mind at that moment, leaving to us the ugly task of saying how wonderful his music is. Nice guy. But, in this case, that “ugly task” is a complete pleasure.
He has not a very long story behind: he started to get popular when he won a demo contest organized by specialized Spanish mag Rock De Lux. The prize of that contest was the recording of an album. Quite very often, albums resultant of these kinds of contests are not specially good. But this is not the case of MELL ALLEN´s debut.
“Dallas” was acclaimed as Spain´s first drum&bass album. And that´s not fair. It´s just not enough. That´s underrating a truly entertaining album, full of mood swings, excitement, traces of APHEX TWIN, SQUAREPUSHER or even ORBITAL, tons of humour and a complete lack of prejudices -he calls himself the creator of a new genre: “country-jungle”!!! – that helps to make “Dallas” one of the most attractive techno albums ever made in Spain.
One of his most notorious live appearances took place in Barcelona´s Bam Festival in 1998, in a bill including James Hardway and DJ Aphrodite.
In 2000 MELL ALLEN and Elefant go in different ways. His second album is released by Subterfuge.
