Sometimes it is really amazing how some groups are capable of reinventing themselves, independent of having a long-running career or a recognizable sound. But it is even more surprising when a group can do that without betraying their own essence. MODULAR’s new album is full of their trademark impeccable pop melodies, a solid collection of analogue synthesizers, and that certain combativeness that they acquired from their kraut influences. But “Fuga Al Paraíso” is an album focused on dance, in a tribute to the disco music of the 70s, as their advance single, “Fiebre En La Disco” let us see. But, as if they could do it any other way, it’s all in Mariana Badaracco and Pablo Dahy’s style. That means a lot of pop, kraut, some lounge music, touches of sabadabada and lot of ingenuity.

“Fugitivos Cósmicos” shows it clearly, but their own specific details also get your attention: lyrics full of B-series, where they try to make music out of Philip K. Dick’s prophetic visions, describing a dystopian future of clones, robotized men searching for the escape to paradise (the title of them album, in Spanish, means “escape to paradise”)… “La Niña Fantástica” brings us back to the delirious and amazing MODULAR we know, charged with a cocktail of melodies and sixties arrangements, full of elegance and as playful as ever at the same time. It’s no wonder we’r [ Read more ]

Pay attention, because our favorite Argentinian group is back and they’re doing something really surprising. We all know about their wide knowledge of the spacey analogue that Mariana Badaracco and Pablo Dahy were so good at, but now we are going to discover their incredible abilities to make the dance floor move (not that we haven’t danced to some of their older songs already). “Fiebre En La Disco” is an advance single of their upcoming album, “Fuga Al Paraíso”, and it is a tribute in every way to disco music from the 70s. It’s a tribute to Studio 54, Garage Paradise, Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer… Wah wahs, strings, vocoders, tight suits, and a very personal interpretation of that music and that time, creating their own space halfway between today’s two lovers of that sound – LA CASA AZUL and FITNESS FOREVER. The single comes with a remix (CCCP Remix) by the Russian musician Pavel Polyakof and his group COPY CAT PROJECT. It is a revision that brings the song’s sound 10 years ahead, with echoes of the 80s, from the beginnings of house and dreamy touches, but still maintaining the essence of the original song’s melody.

We also get two striking and spectacular videos directed by Jean-Marie Marbach (http://jm-marbach.net); a very special futuristic dance competition. The French director is a specialist in visual-effects (something that is clear in his creations) and he was also behind two of LA [ Read more ]

Elefant Records, in its constant search for new ideas and projects, is beginning a new collection of limited-edition Singles called “Reworked By Series”. The main idea is that groups on the Elefant label appropriate, play with, and remix each others’ songs. It’s an explosive mix that can create (and has, in fact, already created) really exciting cocktails. We’ve already got our hands on the first two releases from this collection, Guille Milkyway and LA CASA AZUL’s remake of ATTIC LIGHTS, and THE PRIMITIVES songs that MODULAR “perpetrated”. The Argentinian group MODULAR has once again created a cosmic, spacey world based on Paul Court’s guitars and Tracy Tracy’s vocals, making “Purifying Tone” and “Lose The Reason” theirs. And Guille does his thing, making a few new Eurodisco hits from “Future Bound” and “War Years”, two songs from the Scottish band fronted by Kevin Sherry.

Could you say the re-mixers have made their own songscategoría Almost, but also not at all. Those riffs, the vocals, the arrangements, and the melodies that belong to the original versions are special raw material, practically unprecedented, for the “re-constructors”, creating an alloy that is unprecedented, surprising, different, and most important of all, highly enjoyable. The Singles from this new adventure will be released in 500-copy limited-editions o [ Read more ]

Song: Los Chicos Hoy Saltarán A La Pista (LA CASA AZUL)

It took many months of work but we can finally announce, with much joy and satisfaction, the release of “L-FUN 45 (Summer of love)”, the first independent musical videogame for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, a fun application that will get all of the label’s fans excited. The videogame is full of the Elefant universe and our groups. It was created and developed by Dolores Entertainment, a young and promising company that develops mobile phone applications and videogames, and that shares Elefant’s spirit of independent work and passion for music. Dolores Entertainment, who recently celebrated their first anniversary as a company, started their voyage with more classic-styled games with a more direct dynamic, like “Vectron” or “Spanish Chiringuito”. Now, they are official providers for TV3 and they are working on some different, very interesting projects that we’ll be hearing about soon, but L-FUN 45 is their most ambitious project so far.

L-FUN 45 is an interactive musical, a game where the music isn’t just an excuse to smash buttons, but instead it tells us a love story. The love story begins with a break-up, and includes friendship and summertime adventures. The game, which we are launching today, is the first part of a four-part series, since there were so many ideas at the beginning of the project, plus all of the [ Read more ]

Time passes and the secret is out- little by little, like an onion which hides its sweetness between the various layers of skin sacrificed among the indulgent stinging. After the necessary recuperation of their first songs in “Fantasías De Un Robot Psicodélico,” the latest halo of admiration of this (former) Argentinean duet created by Mariana Badaracco and Pablo Dahy, aka, MODULAR, increases and converts them in the highbrow group that they already were for many for several years. “Sinfonía Para Terrícolas,” their first album conceived for Elefant Records is the recognition which will put them on a pedestal, that, without a doubt, they truly deserve.

“Sinfonías Para Terrícolas” started brewing right after the performance of MODULAR at the Indietracks Festival. Making the most out of their trip to England, Mariana and Pablo spent several weeks in the studio of Andy Ramsay (STEREOLAB) with demos of some of their songs and together with Andy and under the sound engineering supervision of Joe Watson (STEREOLAB, but also sound engineer for groups like THE HIGH LLAMAS, among others), they began to record the basslines, voices, percussion, piano, and synthesizers. Andy spontaneously offered to record the drums on some of the songs and experiment with Russian drum machines he collected over the years on tour with STEREOLAB – something which gave a fantastic and experimental groove to the album. ELEFANT RECORDS TURNS 20 [1989-2009]

We’re going to England to celebrate our 20th anniversary at the Indietracks Festival, and the same weekend in Spain the ContemPopranea Festival will also be celebrating our birthday by paying homage to our label!

The Indyspensable festival in Madrid gave us the incredible gift of dedicating an entire day to Elefant this past June 12th, and other festivals like Fuengirola Pop Weekend or Lemon Pop will pay special homage to our label in their next editions of the festivals.

We want to thank everyone for having always been behind us! We feel really happy to have lasted all these years with our philosophy and way of understanding the music world, helping groups that excite us, who are on the sidelines of trends and the industry. None of this would have been possible without the label’s FANS, who have supported us all these years. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

At this stage of the game, it’s clear that the Internet’s popularity as a means of music distribution has caused a proliferation of unusual and really interesting proposals, that have allowed music to reach thousands (or millions, in some cases) of computers through nothing more than telephone wires. The birth of unknown gems, the sudden appearance of dozens of those secrets named “out loud”, has diversified and enriched the musical panorama considerably. MODULAR is an Argentine duo formed in 2000 by Mariana Badaracco and Pablo Dahy. The group is a strange bird in and of itself in the Buenos Aires scene; their affinity for analog synthesizers (the famous “Moog Modular” gave them their name), the B-series and 60s science-fiction esthetic, the pop and lounge, as well as their imaginary mix of melancholic psychedelia and spatial fantasy have made them stand out as unique in a scene accustomed to more rock-oriented and less sophisticated options. Four demos released on CD-Rs and distributed via the web, collaborations on various compilations in countries as diverse as Germany or Brazil, a collection of truly unique compositions – these have been the things that have generated a plethora of fans who have compared the group to the likes of STEREOLAB, OS MUTANTES, BROADCAST, John Barry, THE HIGH LLAMAS, URSULA 1000, Giorgio Moroder, George Gershwin and many more. Maybe the closest comparison is Laetitia Sadier and Tim Gane’s group, [ Read more ]

The British festival Indietracks is paying homage to Elefant Records for our twentieth birthday, giving us control of the organization of the main stage as a present. Indietracks, whose third edition will take place July 24th, 25th and 26th in an old railway station in Butterley (Derbyshire county), has turned into a worldwide, can’t-miss event for fans of the best of indie pop, having brought such bands as Darren Hayman (HEFNER), THE WEEDING PRESENT, COMET GAIN and LOS CAMPESINOS! to previous editions. This year the leap in the festival’s importance and size is considerable, with a total of five stages and an incredible quantity of bands and DJs. That’s why Elefant has been so conscientious (and this is the first time an independent Spanish label organizes a stage at an international festival) to choose unforgettable names, many of which are still unrevealed surprises, including a headliner. Among a mix of bands from the label, friends, and suggestions that we have fallen irrevocably in love with and that have served as an inspiration for Elefant, twenty artists will play on the Elefant stage over the three days of the festival, and here we’re telling you in advance about the first confirmations: CAMERA OBSCURA, AU REVOIR SIMONE, BMX BANDITS, Rose Elinor Dougall, THE FRANK & WALTERS, FITNESS FOREVER, THE SCHOOL, Nick Garrie, LUCKY SOUL, SPEEDMARKET AVENUE, COOPER, LA CASA AZUL (in their only concert this year), COLA JET SET, SUCRETTE, TENDER T [ Read more ]
