Nick Garrie is still slowly working his way through writing new songs and recording them all over the planet, with the help of the friends and fans that he is collecting in every corner of the globe. Just a few months ago we were talking about his precious song recorded with PIGMY, and now we are talking about the work he is developing in New York, at the Malborough Farms Studios of Gary Olson (LADYBUG TRANSISTOR), where he is taking over to record this precious “Lone Ranger In The Sky”, the title-track of the new single by the Scottish composer. This song was originally composed in 1977, the day that Elvis died. It tells the story of two young friends from Norwich (the city that is, by the way, also the home of almost all the songs on “The Nightmare Of JB Stanislas”, Garrie’s most legendary work), who at some point in their lives must separate. One of them dies suddenly, shortly after, and his friend, despite the time and the distance, remembers him with this song. The cover art, by Laura Krapacher, of the Guggenheim Museum, shows those two friends smoking on the edge of the pool.

The song is touching and inspired, but also brilliant and colorful, with an unforgettable chorus. It is getting close to time for one of the most important festivals in our country – maybe even one of the most important festivals internationally – Primavera Sound. And so we want to remember the performances there that have touched us the most. In 2012, Nick Garrie went onstage at the Forum Auditorium, with a chamber music band, to recover and interpret the songs from his legendary “The Nightmare Of JB Stanislas”, as well as some of his more recent compositions.

That’s why we are giving you this Digital Single, with a song recorded in that concert, for free. The chosen song is “Evening”, which was the closing track on “The Nightmare Of JB Stanislas”. The album was cursed for many years to only be found on the shelves of a few chosen album collectors. But its incredible poetic quality and strength led to a few record labels specialized in musical archeology hunting it down and bringing this composer’s songs to light. This process culminated with Elefant Records releasing an album of new material, “49 Arlington Gardens”, which included the collaboration of big names in the Scottish Indie scene like Ally Kerr, Norman Blake (TEENAGE FANCLUB), Francis McDonald (NICE MAN, TEENAGE FANCLUB, BMX BANDITS), Duglas T. The cliché of a second youth turns into something magical and marvelous in the case of Nick Garrie. The author of “The Nightmare Of JB Stanislas” was resuscitated with that incredible “49 Arlington Gardens”, cherished by Scotland’s indie scene:Ally Kerr, Norman Blake (TEENAGE FANCLUB), Francis McDonald (NICE MAN, TEENAGE FANCLUB, BMX BANDITS), Duglas T. Stewart (BMX BANDITS) and Duncan Cameron (DELGADOS, TRAVIS, TRASHCAN SINATRAS). And now it’s being revived again with even more strength than you thought possible, accompanied by Spanish musicians. “Rainy Days In Sunny Sydney” is a totally new Nick Garrie song that’s being released as a digital single. It was arranged and produced by Vicente Maciá, better known as PIGMY, the once singer in the Spanish group CARROTS.

The song recovers the folk spirit from Nick Garrie’s first recordings, full of mandolins and banjos. It’s caressed by Jordi Montero’s glorious violins, which move from evocative and precious to Russian accents. Eli Martín’s sparkling choruses lift the song’s opening to magnificent levels, and the trot of Pau Philippe’s drums turn surprisingly toward eastern Europe, making the Slavic origins of the songwriter’s paternal family relevant. Documentary "The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas [40th Anniversary] A film by Ally Kerr

Ally Kerr is releasing a documentary about Nick Garrie.

The Scottish musician Ally Kerr has made a documentary in which she recovers the origins of “The Nightmare of JB Stanislas”, with commentary from Nick Garrie himself, and follows the strange set of circumstances that led to the album’s decades-long curse, up to the album’s revival in this past year’s Primavera Sound Festival with a live, in-full performance accompanied by a string section, including the rehearsal process and parts of the concert.

This documentary doesn’t just bring together the incredible lengths gone to and initiatives taken in order to pay homage to such a great and wonderful album; it also shares Garrie’s special vision as a song-writer, close and pleasant, careful and hard-working, and as the person behind this story, with his peculiar and unique perception of it from inside, beyond the legends and dark passages that always find their way into these kinds of narratives.

A small piece, sweet and affectionate, respectful and accessible, that in a few short minutes summarizes the transition from obscurity to recognition that has lasted more than forty years, with magical and incredible moments. It’s worth watching, and much more.

Here at Elefant we are continuing our unrelenting mission to rescue material by the distinguished Nick Garrie, and if we spoke about a new single for “Can I Stay With You” a few weeks ago, now the time for “Wheel of Fortune” has arrived in this very special moment for the author of “The Nightmare of JB Stanislas”.

This coming Saturday, June 11th, as a part of the British festival Doune The Rabbit Hole, Garrie will be performing his admired debut album in its entirety, accompanied by Mike Heron of THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND and members of the British band TREMBLING BELLS, the psychedelic pop band led by Alex Neilson, with a line-up that will include string instruments, wind instruments and a rhythm section, in order to make the songs shine as much as possible with the arrangements that Eddie Vartan imagined them with in 1969. Without a doubt, this is an incredible and unique opportunity that will also have great festival-mates like THE VASELINES, TREMBLING BELLS, BMX BANDITS, Ally Kerr and Alasdair Roberts.

But that’s not all, because a curious and attractive deal has just been announced for this coming Christmas. History is vindicating “The nightmare of JB Stanislas”, the cursed disc that Nick Garrie published in 1970 and which barely got to see the light of day. But as if there were a rush of poetic justice, the album is experiencing its second youth and finally getting the recognition it deserves, thanks to the magnificent new edition that Elefant Records worked on last year, which rises to the occasion as a double CD with many extras. A youthfulness that the work’s author is also experiencing, since, after many years of silence, he released “49 Arlington Gardens” two years ago, with the invaluable help of some of the big names on the Scottish scene, like Duglas T. YO, TAMBIÉN [ME TOO]: will compete in the “World Cinema Narrative" category at Sundance Film Festival [USA]

“Yo También (Me Too)” has been selected to participate in the United States at the prestigious Sundance International Film Festival, founded by Robert Redford in 1981. The festival will take place January 21st – 31st, 2010, in Park City, near Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah. According to the announcement, “Yo También (Me Too)”, written and directed by Álvaro Pastor and Antonio Naharro, has been chosen out of over thousands of movies from all over the world and will compete in the “World Cinema Narrative” category with thirteen other films from New Zealand, Iraq, Argentina, Columbia, Estonia, South Korea and Australia, among others. “Yo, Tambien” will begin its American trajectory on the grand scale. The Festival chooses 12 to 16 movies to compete in each of its four category: “US Documentary”, “US Dramatic”, “World Cinema Documentary” and “World Cinema Narrative". The Festival’s programmers chose, from among more than 9,800 movies and documentaries sent for the 2010 edition, “works that take risks and that tell a story in its entirety”. It seems like the time is coming for Nick Garrie’s recognition. The author of one collectors’ most desired cursed vinyls, “The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas” (an album that, by the way, Elefant will be re-releasing soon in a special format: double CD with an autobiographical book), has managed to regain all of the elegies that his previous disc deserved with the release of his new album, “49 Arlington Gardens”, which is being released by our company and which was recorded with artists like Duglas T Stewart (BMX BANDITS), Norman Blake (TEENAGE FANCLUB) and Ally Kerr. We’re going to England to celebrate our 20th anniversary at the Indietracks Festival, and the same weekend in Spain the ContemPopranea Festival will also be celebrating our birthday by paying homage to our label!

The Indyspensable festival in Madrid gave us the incredible gift of dedicating an entire day to Elefant this past June 12th, and other festivals like Fuengirola Pop Weekend or Lemon Pop will pay special homage to our label in their next editions of the festivals.
