“Dime Mentiras” is the new single from PAPA TOPO, which will be included on their upcoming album, “Tormenta De Verano”, to be released in 2024. This advance single is a song about loneliness in the modern world, and Adriàexplains the universe surrounding this song in his own words.

“In the context of a hyperconnected society, where there are more and more interpersonal relationships but these relationships are more and more superficial, love becomes a product to use and throw away. It seems like in this meat market, those who sell themselves better, who collect more lovers, have more value. In this rat race of meeting as many people as possible, I have often felt profoundly alone, surrounding myself with people with whom I have nothing in common, and for whom I have just been another notch on their list of ordinary loves.

The song expresses the boredom and sadness of feeling alone in a crowd and the need to escape, to lie to yourself, to fantasize about profound emotional connections. This is what capitalism drives us to – the obsession with accumulating lovers, like accumulating objects, like accumulating goods. And the music industry also puts a lot of pressure on numbers: caught up in an endless whirlwind of releasing singles and albums, music groups are constantly anxious to create viral publications that lead to millions of streams. Sometimes it seems more important to be in the spotlight than to reflect on what k [ Read more ]

While we’re still waiting for new music to come in from PAPA TOPO (thank the Lord, we won’t have to wait much longer), we are bringing you something very special from a parallel dystopian reality. In this reality, the extreme right won the recent general elections in Spain and PAPA TOPO were forced to abandon their queer leftist antics and turn into “LOS PAPA MOVILS”, a catholic pop band that sings about the lord’s miracles in religious macro-festivals. The song that PAPA TOPO’s döpplegangers have done is a version of “Sangre En Los Zapatos (Mi Amor)” made especially for the TV series directed by Los Javis “La Mesías”, in a religious tone. The result is so much fun and so incredible: it praises the mystic phenomenon of stigmata and all those saints that have seen their flesh opened with wounds on the cross. The lyrics take a radical turn, leaving the production work of Guille Milkyway (LA CASA AZUL) intact, like in the original. Lines like “La gente admira las llagas que el Señor me ha dado / Una indeleble señal de unión con el amado / Dios me ha marcado como a una oveja del rebaño / Soy viva imagen de Cristo Rey crucificado” (People admire the sores the Lord gave me / An indelible sign of union with the beloved / God has marked me like a sheep in the flock / I am the spitting image of Jesus on the cross) feed into the legend that Adrià Arbona’s ca [ Read more ]

Even though it has already been five years since PAPA TOPO’s first full-length album (and eleven since their first single, “Oso Panda”), we can’t say that Adrià and company have been taking it easy. New singles, important collaborations (with MARIA DANIELA Y SU SONIDO LASSER and Yurena, for example), composing for movie soundtracks (“La Maldita Primavera”, “Nos Parecía Importante” and “Puta Y Amada” by Marc Ferrer), their impressive performance on the “Cachitos De Hierro Y Cromo” New Year’s Eve special of 2019, two tours in Mexico… Their new release includes a little of all of that – new ultra-addictive songs; top-notch collaborations like Samantha HudsonZaida Carmona and LA PROHIBIDA, among others. The five songs that are included on this Digital EP belong to the soundtrack from Marc Ferrer’s newest movie, “¡Corten!”. It is an exercise that plays with the comedy, thriller, and queer film genres as well as pays tribute to the Italian giallo genre. As you can imagine, the result is incredibly juicy, and is only made juicier with the way Adrià has used a clear influence from the Spanish copla and pasodoble. Let’s take a closer look, because there is so much to see.

TRACKLIST: 01 La Chica Vampira 2K20 (Feat. Maria Daniela Y Su Sonido Lasser)

PAPA TOPO has always had a weakness for horror, bloody, and science fiction themed songs, so Day of the Dead (or Halloween) has always been a very appropriate moment to listen to their songs. That is why we have chosen this specific date to commemorate the tenth anniversary of “La Chica Vampira”, one of the group’s most memorable hits.

Ever since PAPA TOPO went on tour in Mexico, Adrià has been completely in love with the country, and has been spending some time there lately. On one of his trips, a fan that knew how much liked MARIA DANIELA Y SU SONIDO LASSER’s music, gave him her entire discography, signed, and put them in touch. A year ago, Adrià was in Mexico City the weeks leading up to Day of the Dead, and he was fascinated with the festive and also gloomy ambiance that filled the city: the street alters for Santa Muerte, the markets crowded with people buying candy skulls and mortuary-themed knick-knacks, the bakeries full of Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead)… It was a totally Papa Topo-style scene and it was clear that Adrià had to take advantage of the moment and make a video there. And it was clear that it was the right time to record a remake of “La Chica Vampira” with MARIA DANIELA Y SU SONIDO LASSER!

Both the song and the video were put together in a few short days, since Adrià had to return quickly to Spai [ Read more ]

The end of the year is coming, and it has become a tradition to anxiously await the musical bits that are being prepared for us to the New Year’s Eve special “Cachitos De Hierro Y Cromo”. And we can give you a little hint of what to expect. Among the special guests, we are going to hear PAPA TOPO with a very special cover of SONIA Y SELENA. It is an ultra-danceable song that also includes a small tribute: the music base is a sample of the B-side of the first Single from the forgotten group GOMA DE MASCAR, “Soñando En El Cielo”, which is turning exactly 40 years old. We are taking advantage of this occasion to release this Digital Single that is a celebration of parties, of New Year’s, of the anniversary of GOMA DE MASCAR, and that we will be hoping to be with you while you listen to music, one more year. We already knew about Adrià’s ability to write great summer hits. Or maybe you don’t want to admit that every time summer comes, the wonder that is “Lo Que Me Gusta Del Verano Es Poder Tomar Helado” comes right into your headcategoría Because with this “Sirenear”, PAPA TOPO has left us speechless. It is a love song to Mallorca, to its contrasts; it mixes the vitality of its crystalline waters with the sadness of living a bit isolated and looking for physical love.

This song has arrived to illuminate and (and rock) these summer days, and for it, Adrià himself confirms he was influenced by other summer hits by PARADISIO, SONIA Y SELENA, PONT AERI and even songs that were used in tourist ads in the 60’s (“El Puente Hacia Mallorca” and “El Turista 1.999.999”).

For the production, they worked with Milton (DËNVER), whom Adrià met a few years ago when DËNVER played their last concerts in Spain, and they stayed at his house in Barcelona for a few days. That is where they discovered that they had a lot in common, musically and personally, and they decided to work together in the future. When he wrote “Sirenear”, Adrià thought that Milton would be the perfect producer because of the sweet, danceable sound of so many of his productions ("Mai Lov", "El Fondo Del Barro" or his recent "6,6").

On “Sirenear”, we hear the story of a mer [ Read more ]

We are releasing the Digital EP for the soundtrack for Marc Ferrer’s movie, “Puta Y Amada”, with the songs “Telenovela” (a duet with PAPA TOPO and La Prohibida), “Ese Hombre” (a duet with PAPA TOPO and Yurena) and “Éxtasis Total” by BELINDA Y DELFINA.

The album opens with the duet between PAPA TOPO and Yurena, a danceable yet melancholic and dramatic version of “Ese Hombre”, the classic by Manuel Alejandro and Ana Magdalena that Rocío Jurado made famous in the early 80s. Right after that, we have “Telenovela”, an original and autobiographic song written together by Adrià and Marc about their relationship (a subject that is also one of the main plotlines of the movie). The songwriting, which drinks musically from melodic Spanish song as much as it does from the electronic pop of PET SHOP BOYS, has a complex structure, full of changes and suppressive modulations like soap opera-y twists, giving the song a kind of “progressive pop” feel. Like a television show, the songs builds tension as it develops, until the climactic final episode in which, to the tune of strident trumpets and  deafening cymbals and bells, love is pronounced dead.

The video for “Telenovela” is a trash horror thriller telling the painful four-part love story, starring Adrià Arbona, La ProhibidaBerner May [ Read more ]

A major event in pop is happening! Yurena, many years after her debut (which included the work of composers like Carlos Berlanga, Nacho Canut, Luis Miguélez, Tito Pintado, Teresa Iturrioz and Ibon Errazkin), is flirting with underground Spanish pop again, in a flaming collaboration with PAPA TOPO. The song, “Ese Hombre”, is a highly danceable disco-pop duet cover of the marvelous original written by Manuel Alejandro and Ana Magdalena in 1980 and made famous with the voice of Rocío Jurado.

This Single is the advance of the release of the soundtrack for “Puta Y Amada”, the new movie by Marc Ferrer, in which both Yurena and Adrià Arbona (the frontman for PAPA TOPO) have acting roles and show off their more interpretive sides. Yurena has always been an esthetic reference for Adrià from the beginning, and in many PAPA TOPO concerts they have performed a cover of the pop anthem “A Por Ti”. Their meeting in the filming of “Puta Y Amada” made it possible for this duet to become almost inevitable. The movie had its world premiere at the D’A FILM FEST in Barcelona, and has also been shown at the Atlántida Film Fest and on Filmin.

The “Puta Y Amada” soundtrack album is a three-song Digital Single, released by Elefant Records, which also includes the long-awaited duet with PAPA TOPO and another of the great divas of pop today, La Prohibida, who gives voice to the heartbreaking love s [ Read more ]

We are releasing, together on one digital album, the soundtracks for “La Maldita Primavera” and “Nos Parecía Importante”, the two movies directed by Marc Ferrer withmusic written by PAPA TOPO's Adrià Arbona.

If in “Nos Parecía Importante”, Marc’s first work, the group made a stellar appearance playing a disco version of LOS FRESONES REBELES’ “Medio Drogados”, in “La Maldita Primavera”, PAPA TOPO are the absolute stars, playing themselves in a crazy plot full of reptiles, surprising characters, pop music, adolescent freshness and heartbreak. The album was conceived by Producciones Inmundas, the collective through which Adrià and Marc have collaborated closely these last few years. Marc was in charge of PAPA TOPO’s more recent videos, of the visuals in their concerts, and the promotional photos. Adrià has been involved in two of Marc’s full length films, taking care of the music, and helping with the production of and starring in – along with the rest of the group –“La Maldita Primavera”.

On the musical side, the majority of the songs on the album were produced by Adrià and Marc. Marc also participated on the arrangements of some songs and is co-author of “La Llamada” and wrote the words for “Me Besaste”, the Pegamoide-style version of Debbie Harry’sson [ Read more ]

This May, “La Maldita Primavera” – the movie directed by Marc Ferrer and starring PAPA TOPO – will be released. Marc is the group’s regular director for their latest videos and directed his first movie, “Nos Parecía Importante”. The movie is a musical comedy about a reptilian that travels to Earth to find out if the human species is a threat to the rest of the galaxy, and if they’ll have to exterminate us for it. This is inspired in PAPA TOPO’s song “Je Suis Un Monstre”, from their last album, “Ópalo Negro”, released in June, 2016. Beyond science-fiction, “La Maldita Primavera” is a movie about fun, pop music, and how fleeting romantic passion and youth are. Adrià, Júlia, Óscar and Sònia surround themselves with an extensive cast, including Barcelona’s trash diva, Mónica del Raval. Among Marc Ferrer’s esthetic references you can find the outrageous, trashy movies of John Waters, the simple perspective of Eric Rohmer, the way of making movies with little-to-no budget like early Almodóvar, or the comic distance of Hong Sang-soo or Buñuel

The movie opens in the D’A FILM FESTIVAL BARCELONA, May 4th at 22:15 in the CCCB Theater, and before the screening PAPA TOPO will give a mini-concert. To celebrate the highly-anticipated release of this film, Elefant Records is soon going to release th [ Read more ]

Finally, the long-awaited full-length from PAPA TOPO is here, after almost three years of record-label silence. This period has allowed Adrià Arbona to let the group’s new line-up settle, solidify, and develop its own sound. Júlia Fandos (vocals, and flute), Òscar Huerta (guitars and backing vocals) and Sònia Montoya (bass and backing vocals) join Adrià to form the current reality of one of the groups that stirred up the music scene the most, at the beginning of the decade. These past three years, PAPA TOPO has participated on compilations, they have played songs in live performances halfway around the globe, and most of all, they have very carefully and affectionately prepared their long-awaited debut album.

And now there is a blizzard of unknowns. How have the past three years affected such a young and promising song-writer like Adriàcategoría Has the group’s sound changed, and if so, how muchcategoría In a way, we can say totally and not at all. After having shown us his versatility, moving from sixties sounds to saba-daba-da, from garage to punk, from disco to the sweetest pop, it isn’t going to surprise us at all to hear classical pieces, or boleros, on an album that doesn’t completely forget what came before. But it’s all much more cohesive; you can tell that there is more than just a song-writer at work behind it, that there is a solid band. In any case, we are once again looking at a super [ Read more ]
