To enter rebe’s world is to enter a dangerous but thrilling universe that is equal parts murky and sweet, uncomfortable and disturbing. Each new song is like one of those dirty secrets of state that only a lucky few know. And the latest one is in “hasta el fin…”, a song that she produced herself, and that was arranged by OTRO (Aaron Morris). And we already know what that means: lysergic stylings and pop, Alfonso Santisteban and Marisa Medina, Bebu Silvetti and Jane Birkin, possession and spitefulness. And the video, created by both rebe and OTRO, reflects this perfectly: the visual esthetic of the seventies (those greys, those hazy flashes), the makeup and the decoration as a doll were walking through that classic Spanish small-town fair. And then she sings, “Dice mi madre que desde que te veo / Me duele la tripa, se me enreda el pelo / Dicen que desde que bebí de tu boca / Yo me volví loca” (My mom says that since I saw you / My stomach hurts, my hair is in knots / They say since I drank from your mouth / I have gone crazy) and you fall completely under her spell and that way she has of talking about the deepest, most addictive love, “Mete tu mano debajo de mi falda / Juntos estaremos hasta el fin / Besa mi pelo, tócame la cara” (Put your hand under my skirt / We’ll be together till the end / Kiss my hair, touch my face). Since her last single, “Marisol”, she mixes her whispers with the m [ Read more ]

We are just crazy about rebe. If “solo pasiones…” already had us completely hypnotized, confirming her status as a pioneer and rara avis of outer-space erotic pop, now she is snapping us to attention with a straight shot to the heart. “Marisol” begins with a deformed, filtered cover of the classic pasodoble “El Gato Montés”, authentic early XX century vibes oozing out of every note. And then the song takes off: where before rebe sounded silky, here she sounds capricious, crazed, unpredictable; the song flirty, playful, electronic pop; they lyrics bloody, shameless, passionate, painful. Absolutely radical bizarre pop and at the same time dazzling, seductive, highly catchy and addictive. Because rebe inhabits unoccupied territories, even if we think that everything has already been done. It would make Susana Estrada sound elegant, CAMELA sound delicate, LAS CHUCHES seem as exquisite as Cecilia. She would make the town fair open-air concerts sound like delicatessen pop.

For this single, more danceable than the previous ones, she has been lucky enough to work on the concept with OTRO (Aaron Morris) and have Lorenzo Matellán contribute on the mastering. The song sticks in the memory instantly, euphorically dramatic, marvelously great. Because that’s what we’re talking about, isn’t ití

Listening to new music is always an odyssey in search of seduction in its purest, most spontaneous and instantaneous form. Discovering unexplored territory, breathing unknown air. It is an arduous and complex adventure that presents artists with the need to develop a unique musical language all their own. Not many are able to pull it off. But some do it with astonishing ease. The trail of breadcrumbs that rebe has been leaving to lead us to this Mini-LP called “solo pasiones…” makes it clear that we are looking at a great, multi-faceted and incomparable artist.

rebe started out as a member of the group LULI REBE & SUS XOCOLATINAS along with her friend Luli and the omnipresent Cardevore, a travel companion who has helped with production and performances. But she shifted quickly into a solo career, as a result of her curiosity and musical inquisitiveness.

The first official release in physical format was through the Snap! Clap! Club and Jeanne D’Arc labels, and it was a cassette with her debut, “Recuerdos de cuando me aplastó una roca y me morí” (2019) which sold out in a matter of hours, even before being released, and came wrapped in fabric that rebe herself sewed by hand. The vinyl re-release of the album also sold out immediately. On it, we could find authentic sonic and melodic discoveries (and that production work!). One of the things that made her considerably increase her array of followers were her covers. To [ Read more ]

Whenever there is anything new from rebe it is a very exciting moment. Unpredictable, disturbing, unique… What she has to offer is so special that sometimes it is hard to think about how we will react to her new songs and videos, or anything else about her. From her Mini-LP “solo pasiones…” which is about to come out, we are bringing you the second advance that perfectly embodies what we were talking about before. Including the collaboration of pup puppy (@amor.amor.amor.a.m.o.r), “la mas wapa del bar” is a cumbia that is also a hymn for perversity, and at the same time is a strange mix of sweetness and sensuality. It is capable of combining and turning the bizarre into elegance, the outdated into sophistication, the uncouth into excitement. And it is all done with an exquisite taste in pop melodies and evanescent ambiances. It is like what you could get if you put José Luis Perales, Grimes and Peaches together; it is hard to describe, so it’s best to just listen to it for yourself.  But we are warning you – you will not be indifferent.

But with rebe, it’s the whole package. The esthetic, the cover art, the videos, they all form part of a way of looking at life, music and art. Specifically, the audiovisual that she has prepared for this song along with pup puppy herself, under the creative guidance of the twins Virginia and Victoria Martín Mateos, makes everything we were talking about before cle [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 jamon

Every new song from rebe is a shock. We are not surprised that, beat by beat, she is turning into one of the most important names on the new national pop scene. And here you have more proof. “jamon” maintains all that irreverence and that iconoclastic spirit. It has one of her most incredible melodies so far, and has especially precious production work. It is delicate, fragile, seductive, even turbulent at times. And with a surprise musical twist halfway through. rebe is pure fantasy and dreaminess. We have no doubt that when her new full-length gets here, it is going to be miraculous.

Once again, she gets a little help from Victoria Martín, and her sister Virginia, to make it clear again in the corresponding video how extremely careful she is with the esthetic, how important it is for her, that decadent, decaying nineteenth century elegance that she knows so well how to transgress. It is incredible to see this kind of thing in the XXI century. But it is even more incredible to realize that this is only just getting started.

rebe’s BIOGRAPHY:

Entering rebe’s universe is not just entering her liquid and effervescent, analogical and playful, sensual and extra smooth bedroom pop, somehow connected to artists as personal and incomparable as Ana D, VAINICA DOBLE, Jeanette and HIDROGENESSE (and do not be mistaken – she does not sound like any of them). It is also entering her poign [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 si mirarte es delito q me lleven a prision

We could not wait for this moment to arrive; we finally have a little advance of what will be rebe’s first Mini-LP for Elefant. This album has been forming slowly for months, with so much love and affection, and it will come out after summer on a delicious color vinyl. It is an excellent collection of songs that we are so excited to share with all of you. But life’s greatest pleasures have to be enjoyed little by little, and this is a great appetizer. The thing is, each new song from rebe is a whole new experience. Her mix of irreverence and elegance, of silliness and sensuality, her dreamlike world that is so her own and inimitable, make the magic of her songs seem eternal. “si mirarte es delito q me lleven a prision” has some of the best ingredients: classic pop and current sounds, echoes of melodic lounge, analogue synthesizers, a crystalline voice, and above all, a lot of attitude. This is an absolutely delicious song – terse and sweet on the surface, but evoking the figure of the femme fatale taken to a whole new universe.

But, rebe is more than just songs, she is an esthetic, an image, light, pleasure, audiovisuals; she is a world, a universe, she is herself. That is why the cover and the video for this exquisite song are part of a whole that you have to dive into and let yourself be irrevocably carried away.
