SINGLE is a unique, unprecedented projected; every step that Teresa and Ibon take is a sign of their unmistakable identity, and they even manage to stay away from any hint of predictability when they pay homage to other artists’ work.

And of course there is so much to learn from their drawing attention to “Io pomodoro”, and it is so appealing and surprising.“Io pomodoro” is the album that actress Lucía Bosé recorded in 1981 with classical composer Gregorio Paniagua; it is really a hidden gem, one which has been forgotten over time, a mix of inspiration and experimentation, of fleeting loveliness and volatility. A compilation CD of songs sung by actresses led them to the single that had come from that album, “Dime quién eres, desconocido vecino”, and from there they discovered the album itself. They were immediately fascinated and began incorporating it into their concerts, where they performed versions of the single, which led them to this small homage to the album, a limited-edition, tomato-red 7” that includes, in addition to the previously mentioned song, a revised version of “Nana de una sola nota”.

And as is to be expected, SINGLE resuscitate the songs in such a way that it is impossible to find any type of similarity with the original, and continue creating their own marvellous universe through the fantasies of other great artists. And so, “Dime quien eres, desconocido v [ Read more ]

This past June 20th, in the Casa de América in Madrid, the Independent Music Awards [UFI] were held. Here at Elefant we want to thank everyone who helped make it possible for us to win the prize for the “Best Independent Record Label” category.

Congratulations to all the winners, whom you can see for all the different categories here: http://www.premiosdelamusicaindependiente.com/11/

The trophy was designed by Olaf Ladousse, and this is especially exciting for us, since we admire him so much and are long-standing fans of his work as graphic artist, designer, musician, inventor and fanziner. The following is a description of the priceless instrument-trophy:

“Heir of a battery and a microchip emigrated from the plastic body of a toy accidently abandoned by a spoiled child, the doorag makes its way among tones and rhythms. Electric circuitry mutation via photoelectronic cells and a dancing spring, the instrument/trophy makes the Independent Music Awards ceremony more enjoyable, sensitive to the applause and outbursts. Created by Olaf Ladousse with his own hands, it is the fruit of his homemade experiments with empirical “circuit bending” electronics.”

“Monologo interior” has reached, on its own merit, the highest spots on the “Best of” lists for 2010 in the majority of the music magazines and specialized media. The San Sebastian duo’s second album is classic and extraordinary, a collection of singular and intimate songs. Their concerts have become an extension of that shocking personality and that unique universe; in fact Rockdelux placed their live show as the second best in the country on their 2010 “Best of” list and they explain: “SINGLE’s concerts are infrequent, but greater in number than they were two years ago. They are also varied, talented and, not only now but starting ages ago, theatrical. Teresa sings better and better all the time and her wardrobe changes…” They concluded with by proclaiming them “A national treasure”. Those wardrobe changes have a proper name, and it is Carlos Díez Díez, one of the most important, radical and alternative fashion designers in our country. Carlos has become, and has been for some time now, a crucial part of the group’s image, and he is also an important protagonist, along with Miguel Gutiérrez, in the group’s new audiovisual adventure, their new video “Fotos”.

It’s finally in our hands, after that appetizer of “Mr. Shoji” (danceable hit with Jamaican airs, Rockdelux magazine’s best song of 2009), the highly anticipated second disc by SINGLE, the group led by Teresa Iturrioz and Ibon Errazkin. And now that we’ve got the disc in our hands, we can say that we are holding the most complete, consistent, enduring and highest achieving disc of their career. Saying something like that, in Teresa and Ibon’s case, is saying quite a lot.

Anyone who knows the cult-following they had fronting LE MANS will find some clues on this disc that connect this mythical past to the splendorous future that has opened up before them with this new project. If “Pío pío”, SINGLE’s first album, was a collecting of songs written over a period of years, experimenting with new formats, rhythms and programs, and forging a new path with their untiring curiosity, “Monólogo interior” is a more classic and compact album, without a conceptual story but definitely with a more intimate focus, even introspective on occasions. The album has an abundance of images that evoke feelings of loss and nostalgia and it is less decidedly rhythmic.

Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean that the fun, danceable rhythms that were part of what made the first disc so spectacular have been put to the side: there’s the dreamy, orchestral rhythm of “Fotos”, the futuri [ Read more ]

The British festival Indietracks is paying homage to Elefant Records for our twentieth birthday, giving us control of the organization of the main stage as a present. Indietracks, whose third edition will take place July 24th, 25th and 26th in an old railway station in Butterley (Derbyshire county), has turned into a worldwide, can’t-miss event for fans of the best of indie pop, having brought such bands as Darren Hayman (HEFNER), THE WEEDING PRESENT, COMET GAIN and LOS CAMPESINOS! to previous editions. This year the leap in the festival’s importance and size is considerable, with a total of five stages and an incredible quantity of bands and DJs. That’s why Elefant has been so conscientious (and this is the first time an independent Spanish label organizes a stage at an international festival) to choose unforgettable names, many of which are still unrevealed surprises, including a headliner. Among a mix of bands from the label, friends, and suggestions that we have fallen irrevocably in love with and that have served as an inspiration for Elefant, twenty artists will play on the Elefant stage over the three days of the festival, and here we’re telling you in advance about the first confirmations: CAMERA OBSCURA, AU REVOIR SIMONE, BMX BANDITS, Rose Elinor Dougall, THE FRANK & WALTERS, FITNESS FOREVER, THE SCHOOL, Nick Garrie, LUCKY SOUL, SPEEDMARKET AVENUE, COOPER, LA CASA AZUL (in their only concert this year), COLA JET SET, SUCRETTE, TENDER T [ Read more ]

We’re finally opening our own YouTube channel! There was tons and tons of material to put up (and really, there’s still so much more), and Internet users can finally subscribe to the Elefant Records page on the most famous and visited video website in the world, which can be accessed from this web address: http://www.youtube.com/elefantrecords

For the channel’s official inauguration we’ve put up various new videos, some previously unreleased. You can enjoy the exclusive new video-clip of CORAZON’s “Nuevo Futuro” or SPEEDMARKET’s newest single, “No Drama”, which will be released in July and which we’re releasing the splendid new video-clip of in advance. There are a ton of LA CASA AZUL videos, plus interviews, live videos, reports… but the most exciting thing, for the moment, is definitely the video-clip of the English version of “La Revolution Sexual”. You can also find reports and interviews with COOPER that you most certainly haven’t seen, as well as three songs recorded live for the MySpace special, including the song “Mi Universo”, which is a completely new song not even included on Alex‘s latest work, “Aeropuerto”.

We have more than 100 video-clips from Elefant groups available (yes, all the videos from LA CASA AZUL, COOPER, CAMERA OBSCURA, NOSOTRÄSH, SINGLE, HEAVENLY, LOS FLECHAZOS, LUCKY SOUL, LA BIEN QUERIDA …) and a ton of extra pr [ Read more ]

There is no other group like SINGLE. Simply put, they have no equal. It is a group that is capable of constantly reinventing itself without losing its absolutely recognizable personality. This is a musical project that has no limits other than its own curiosity, concern and excitement about finding new paths. Sometimes intimate and beautiful, other times – like this song here – fun and danceable.

“Mr Shoji” is the new song from SINGLE after three EP’s and an album that has placed Teresa Iturrioz and Ibon Errazin’s project in the sights of fans of the most innovative pop. In this new song, which is already a crowd favorite in their concerts, SINGLE come riding in on a contagious new synthetic rhythm that brings Jamaica together with Chicago. The ragamuffin and the blues unite in an incredibly natural way that is made stronger by the pop spirit that always fills their productions. In the best Jamaican tradition, the B-side of this vinyl single (the original pop format, which gives privilege to the songs and pays homage to the sound systems) is a dub version of the title track, in which Ibon Errazkin’s genius is even more noticeable. This is live, advanced and tremendously modern pop. Different from everything else, but without losing its familiarity.

For the occasion, SINGLE asked the very Mr. Shoji to make the video-clip for the song name after him. Mr. Shoji is no other than Japanese DJ Rootsseker, who has been living in Spain for s [ Read more ]

A little time ago we announced from East to West, full of euphoria and illusion, that SINGLE would throw themselves fully onto the stages to present their excellent songs live. Their shows have amazed us all: the mise-en-scène is elegant, original, well cared for and completely apart from what we’re used to experience in venues; something unique and really special. Everyone who has been to any of the band’s live shows knows what we’re talking about. The next step in SINGLE’s career was their premiere in Paris,  nowhere else than in the New Casino, in a night held by the Magic magazine (the coolest music magazine in France, that had SINGLE on their front page), sharing the stage with Valérie Leulliot (singer in AUTOUR DE LUCIE, who opened for them and presented her new songs backed by an acoustic trio) and with illustrious guest DJ Bertrand Burgalat (musician, producer and visible head of the Tricatel label) at the decks. The result, in a country where SINGLE are even more popular and admired than in their own land, was most moving. The French audience surrendered themselves to the band’s charms; SINGLE proved their mastery and elegance onstage and left a delicious taste for the exquisite and demanding Parisian palates. The proof is in the pudding:

Christophe Basterra (director of the Magic magazine):"Yes, last Sunday May 18th there was, amongst the audience that had come to the New Casino, a lot of curiosity and longing to [ Read more ]

We have been waiting for the tour of the presentation of “Pío Pío” (similar to the wait to see Teresa and Ibon in concert. 12 years past and we were not sure if we were going to see them on a stage again!), but the wait has proved to be fruitful. Up until now, all of the concerts have been a success and have been well worth the wait. The official live presentation in the venue El Sol in Madrid was packed and the concert was marvelous as Teresa shined like never before, with Ibon on guitar, Tito’s voice and Joan’s keyboarding. Classics from their repertoire, new versions of popular songs, B sides and above all, balls of laughter on and off the stage. After confirming their next concert in the Festival Internacional de Benicàssim, SINGLE just announced their first concert outside of the Spanish borders: next Sunday May 18th in the venue Nouveau Casino of Paris, the French audience is in for a real treat, which many fans have waited anxiously for this moment for years. These fans have not only followed loyally from the beginning of SINGLE, yet since the days of LE MANS. One sees this even more since the prestigious magazine, Magic, dedicated an entire cover (and a ten page article!) to the release of the album there. We expect them to visit other countries with strong solid fan support soon. Meanwhile, these are the confirmed upcoming live shows of SINGLE:

We finally see images of the title song of the cd that has meant the definite return of Teresa Iturrioz and Ibon Errazkin after making history in Spanish pop with LE MANS. "Pío Pío" is one of the best songs out lately and the UserT38 video gives it justice, wrapping it up with mysterious and very elegant images. The video transmits an unreal sensation from the beginning with recorded applauses which resonate in the empty space of the video set and a timeless sensation which impedes you in knowing if it’s set in the 40’s, 50’s, 70’s or directly in the imaginative future.

Teresa Iturrioz is beautiful, elegant and distant like an Iranian woman. Throughout the instrumental part (the surprising and hit sampling symphony idea of Ibon Errazkin) she maintains inscrutable like an Egyptian sphinx, up until she starts to sing the wonderful lyrics of the song. Without losing her serenity, of course! The scenery is austere and could be seen as a black and white video if it was not for the colourful crest of a parrot. The video "Pío Pío" is fabulous and hypnotic and you will need to watch it again and again. Despite the apparent scarcity, one can discover new and suggestive ideas in each and every viewing.
