Joe Moore continues showing off his unprecedented creative activity. The amount and diversity of the albums he has released and produced for Elefant Records since 2011 is unparalleled. Everything started with THE YEARNING’s “Jukebox Romance” (2012), full of delicacy and painstaking artwork in marvelous chamber pop, reminiscent of those girl groups from the 50s. Since then, he has made music with Lia Pamina; he has produced R’n’B and electronic pop for Maddie Mae; and he has written eighties-style Italo Disco and europop with Cristina Quesada. He has also collaborated with Julie Big (ex-singer from LE SUPERHOMARD) on the Julie Et Joe project, with which he paid a well-deserved tribute to 80s French pop (ELLI ET JACNO, LIO, MIKADO…). He explored electronic pop with Holly Vanags under the name THE PERFECT KISS, and, together with Luci Ashbourne, paid tribute to ABBA, to disco music, and 70s pop in general on his last album with THE YEARNING. And after having visited all these different territories, he’s back with a dream-pop, shoegazing, folk-pop album with certain crooner touches, where melodic elegance, the most profound relaxation, and romanticism are all back in full force. This new delicacy, a heartbreaking gem that will fill you with joy, is being released under the name SUNLIT, and it is new proof that there is no musical ground that Joe Moore can’t inhabit, with marvelous creativity and tremendous resul [ Read more ]

There are songs that were written to be listened to with a broken heart. The daring. Only in that moment when you feel like you’re moving through muddy water, that song is waiting to receive you and keep you afloat. Only the chosen ones, those that were created in similar circumstances (like this italo-disco classic from SAVAGE) can pull it off. Joe Moore gives us this gift of a fourth single, and the last advance from his project SUNLIT’s debut album, which is a revision somewhere between the luminosity of the COCTEAU TWINS from “Heaven Or Las Vegas” and the darkness of THE CURE from “Disintegration”. It takes us to the dark side of the heart. A side we spend a lot of time in, in our lives, and where we need company. “Don’t Cry Tonight” is positioning itself as one of the best versions that you will be able to enjoy this 2024.

The third advance single from Joe Moore’s new project, and something tells us that SUNLIT might be the most special one yet. The sincerity in the lyrics, the close, melancholic emotions in the songs running high, full of tenderness, all lead us to believe this. “Someone So Beautiful” is here as proof. This song is a caress in and of itself, swaying with those reverbs that make us feel like we are in a dream, that evokes some of those incomparable gems that have accompanied us in our most solitary moments: THE FIELD MICE, RED HOUSE PAINTERS, ANOTHER SUNNY DAY, BRIAN and GALAXIE 500. This is a special, unique, inimitable sound, that the British composer transports us to, showing us once again his love of music, his infinite inspiration and his talent with production work. Enjoy.

Every time we come back to this album it brings tears to our eyes. Of course, because each advance single from Joe Moore’s new alter ego makes our heart swell, but also because we are amazed to see how the British composer handles each musical territory he touches so exceptionally. “Back”, the second single from the new project, is a radical example. We know that there will be no more songs from MAZZY STAR, or Julee Cruise, or OPAL. But then we hear “Back”, and it comforts us. It reminds us that music, as much as there are voices and media that try to kill and resuscitate musical labels, never disappears. When the music speaks the truth, it becomes eternal. When it whispers, caresses. When it makes us feel like we’re not alone. Joe Moore is an artist who is a master of all timbers; he pulls all the strings with unusual magic. Take a deep breath. Listen.

It feels strange each time we announce a new project from Joe Moore – with his musical versatility and his prolific, tireless spirit, we feel like we might run out of adjectives to describe such marvelous songs in such diverse musical parameters. SUNLIT is a project dedicated to shoegazing and dream pop. “Break My Heart” is the first advance of what will be their first, eponymous album that we will present very soon. This song is a perfect introduction: ethereal guitars, the spirit of Bobby Wratten drifting through, crystalline melodies, high voltage melancholy, emotions right on the surface. For the occasion, Chris Croft (who has already made videos for THE SCHOOL, THE YEARNING, THE SILVER FACTORY, THE PRIMITIVES, BMX BANDITS, ATTIC LIGHTS, Nick Garrie, THE MAGIC THEATRE, Cristina Quesada) has directed a music video set between the sea and the sunset, an exercise in expressionism that aims to transmit feelings of sadness and pleasure, melancholy and beauty, just like Joe Moore’s new project. Wait until you hear the album. Get your hearts ready, because this is going to hit hard.
