WINTERBRIEF is a two piece from Philadelphia (USA) formed by Julian and Jen. The band was formed one fine day that its makers reached the conclusion that pop music wasnt fast enough. Therefore their first single, "A sucrose polyester", was out in 1998. The next year they released a whole album called "Complaints from the beauty class", a tiny sound chaos reflecting the peculiar style of the couple, mixing riot grrl ethics, punk and techno pop, all spiced with generous amounts of sheer fun.
Julian and Jen love PIL, THE FALL, THE ACTION TIME, DENIM, GO-KART MOZART, THE FALL, ADD N TO X, PET SHOP BOYS or PUBLIC ENEMY just to mention some. And also Spanish punk surf terror trio HELLO CUCA! Hobbies: Jen collects wrapping paper, and Julian is addicted to picture-taking. Their appreciation for good coffee, however, suggests they may be maturing.
Their second album for Intellectos label, "Take the town", will be out in 2001. But first WINTERBRIEF delight us with four wild and raunchy songs for our single club.
"Guitar guitar" opens the record in a thrilling way. The mix of guitars, disco beats and girl-boy vocals bring to mind BIS or B-52s. Or even the angrrriest moments of HUGGY BEAR.
"Life of the party" is even more effective, a true disco-punk hit with an irresistible refrain. Dont expect them to calm down in B-Side, as "Suburban summer" and "Trash this town" are two new exercises of teenage disco rebellion, cheeky as hell and irritably cool.
