Elefant Records continues to be a source of sound material for filmmakers, and the latest proof is “La Amiga De Mi Amiga”, the debut film of Zaida Carmona (yes, the one who sang “La Llamada” with PAPA TOPO in Marc Ferrer‘s film “La Maldita Primavera”), which celebrated its presence on 1 February at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, as part of the Bright Future section. Two days later, on 3 February, and coinciding with the premiere in commercial cinemas in Spain, we are releasing the soundtrack just with the Elefant songs that appear in the movie, which in this case features SOFT REGIME, AIKO EL GRUPO, LISASINSON, JULIE ET JOE, BAND À PART, Giorgio Tuma, NOS MIRAN and FITNESS FOREVER. What a great selection! And as a gift we include in our edition the original version of “Lady Dilema” by Carlos Berlanga, which in the film is covered by Aroa Ay, from SHEGO. The film also features songs by MALAMUTE, MASONIERÍA (the solo project of Sonia, from PAPA TOPO), Rocío Saiz and CHRISTINA Y LOS SUBTERRÁNEOS. In fact, Christina Rosenvinge herself makes a cameo in the film.

“La Amiga De Mi Amiga” is a generational story, as Zaida herself says: “a five-way lesbian comedy of entanglement”, a story about women who love a lot, but love badly. A project that arises from the need to consolidate and reaffirm positive queer and/or feminist references, filmed in eleven days, wit [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Nuestro Momento

We are still working though some of the best moments of “Templos Y Neones”, the latest release from BAND À PART, which came about after their trip to Japan. And now we have come to “Nuestro Momento”. Coral and Javi have here a wonderful example of electronic pop that at times reminds us of that “Electronic Renaissance” by BELLE & SEBASTIAN: arpeggios, huge melodies, a solid chorus. This Digital Single comes with a new video made by Coral herself, where she creates the virtual world of a videogame that frames the story of the song. Fantasy and emotional dystopia. The esthetic reminds us a bit of the incredibly fun “Tron” and where those chromatic scales of violets and purples once again make an appearance, in the bright neon lights that have so marked the development of this most recent album from BAND À PART. It is a dreamt-up universe all their own, close to Shibuya.

Sometimes a life is a story that can be told through our travels throughout our life. It has been a long time since we have heard any news from BAND À PART, but then, traveling takes time. But the road fills us with inspiration, and in the case of Javi and Coral, the result of this is “Templos Y Neones”, their second full-length album, and the objective, is inspired, on some songs, by a trip to the incredible city of Tokyo. This is an album that moves from night to day, that is drunk with Japanese references both in terms of sound and visuals, reaching heights that go beyond pop music. This album is an experience, and it is rich, diverse, sometimes slippery, and like all good journeys, it is exciting.

They talk about City Pop (a musical style that came about during the period of bonanza in Japan in the eighties, that was a mix of disco, funk and synth-pop), about vapor wave and about future funk. Groups like CORNELIUS, SNAILS HOUSE, SPAZZKID, ROOSEVELT, SUMMER CAMP and MAGDALENA BAY. The thing is, “Templos Y Neones” is an album that inevitably breathes a fusion of cultures and references, which makes listening to it tremendously fun and stimulating. The first side, the one that represents the more nocturnal and hedonistic part, abounds in dance music, neons, and bright lights, beginning with “Cómo Hablar Con Chicas En Las Fiestas”, highly danceable and catchy electronic J-Pop, which they had already given us as an ad [ Read more ]

A few months ago, we received the first sonic postcard that Javi and Coral sent us from Tokyo. “Templos Y Neones”, the album, will be their return to the current music scene after years of silence, and it will also be the reflection of a physical, emotional and personal journey. Their new postcard arrives in the form of a Digital Single with its corresponding video, in which we can see a bit of the life and environment of the capital of Japan, and the things that excite them in their new city. Beneath it all, because it couldn’t be any other way, “Templos Y Neones”, the title track of their new album, is a song that reflects the sensations about and reasons for this city being their residence these last few months. Temples, forests, cherry trees in blossom, kimonos, Mount Fuji… And also, neon, lights, restaurants, ramen, skyscrapers. The two sides of a multifaceted country that has charmed our protagonists to the point of being the raison d’etre of this new stage in their music, the inspiration for these new songs. All of this to the beat of euro-disco, techno-pop, and with highly evocative choruses. What more can you ask forcategoría Their anticipated new album will finally be here in its entirety in just a few days.

Five years ago we had no discographic news about Javi and Coral’sband. That compilation called “Maravillas De La Ciencia” made it clear that an era was ending for the group, and left us not knowing what their next step would be. We finally have the answer to this question. BAND À PART is going to release a new album called “Templos Y Neones”. Their trips to Japan made a huge impact on this new incarnation of the group, since the name of their new work references what represents day and night in Tokyo for Javi and Coral. Daytime, calm and sunny, represented by the small temples you find on any corner while you wander around a residential neighborhood. And nighttime, full of neon, bright, crazy and futuristic. The album is a journey from night to day and is even influenced by what was called “City Pop” in Japan in the eighties: a musical trend that came from the huge economic boom from that decade and that had all the young people constantly out on the streets in their cars, blasting funk, disco, and synth-pop, a gesture of care-free hedonism.

And while we are waiting for the album to get here, we have “Cómo Hablar Con Chicas En Las Fiestas” as an advance. And it confirms what we were talking about before. It is a more electronic, danceable song, with influences from eighties synth-pop, disco, electro-pop, euro disco, touches of LIO, Momoko Kikuchi and NEW ORDER, and also of current things like SUMMER CA [ Read more ]

It has been a few years since Javi and Coral’s songs began forming a part of our catalogue. And in those years, BAND À PART has grown little by little, their releases have sold out and gone out of print, and the whole world has heard of them and enjoyed their songs. “Maravillas De La Ciencia” is like a summary of all of this and much more, a compilation of their singles, their Mini-LP, songs from other compilations, and even a few previously unreleased tracks as little gifts.

This collection of songs is necessary for so many reasons; the first and most obvious is that all of their releases so far are absolutely sold-out and no longer available. Small collectors’ pieces with incredible cover art by artists as distinguished as Borja Bonafuente and Ray Kimura (and nowwe can add the cover for “Maravillas De La Ciencia” to this list, with artwork by Paco Martinez Tomás [Odewill]). They are also necessary in order to recover those versions they did of FAMILY (“El Bello Verano”, for the recently released tribute album) and of LOS PLANETAS (that “David y Claudia” that was included on the single “Franny Y Tú”). But above all, it is necessary to evoke a space in time in which, together, we have enjoyed marvellous things. The time begins when they won the demo contest in Contempopránea 2008 (from which they wrote their main theme song) and which brought them to play in festiva [ Read more ]

The Madrid-based duo of Javi Román andCoral Rodriguez did it again with that marvelous 10” vinyl mini-LP called “La Aventura Original” that we put out a few months ago. It was all huge songs, infinitely addictive melodies, crazed fans, and a significant international reaction. “Franny Y Tú” is the logical continuation of all that, a new collection of songs that proves that the group is currently in the midst of a special state of inspiration. Elefant Records is releasing this new single as a green 7”, 333-copy limited-edition, with cover art by Ray Kimura, a Japanese artist who is deeply in love with music – a love which can clearly be seen in her marvelous paintings of Jarvis Cocker, SLOWDIVE, SONIC YOUTH, and MY BLOODY VALENTINE, as well as in her delicious cover art for groups like ALPACA SPORTS.

“Franny Y Tú” comes from “La Aventura Original” and it celebrates BAND À PART’s best qualities: light, agile songs; high energy; so many influences that showcase their extensive musical cu [ Read more ]

These last few years have been a whirlwind for BAND Á PART. Their two singles have flown out of stores; they’ve played in festivals like Indietracks (UK) and Contempopranea; they’ve brought their music to cities like Berlin (as part of the line-up of Berlin PopFest).  Soon they’re running off to Cardiff to take part in the indie festival, “Wales Goes Pop!” and this year is looking like it’s going to be the most active year they’ve had yet.

They’re even making music for a Kellog’s commercial in the United States (there’s nothing better for cereal than Javi and Coral’s delicious melodies). There are so many people all over the world anxiously awaiting the new songs from the band that has made such a mark with its own personality and its knowledge of music that far exceeds the norm, especially when it comes to filling their songs with these qualities. And here we have a marvelous Mini-LP, a 10” orange vinyl, “La Aventura Original”, to scratch the itch and bring the wait to an end.

Things kick off with a huge hit, a song that w [ Read more ]
