John William Davies is a British indie little genius better known as TEEN ANTHEMS, STEPS PISTOLS or SUPERCUTE (he released a CD-single on Elefant Records under this last moniker). With these names he releases indie-pop songs, punk-pop and glitch-pop songs, usually through his own indie label, Sonic Art Union. Now he has compiled all his recordings (featuring songs like "I hate Oasis (and I hate The Beatles)") on the compilation "We heart rock", which he sells for only 5 pounds through his website teenanthems.com. The album includes the remix of his song "Jamie Theakston" by Elefant recording artists LA CASA AZUL. [ Read more ]

Since NIZA ceased to exist as a band, Silvia and Roberto took separate ways, but they left behind a legacy of elegant, sophisticated pop songs; not many (two singles, an album and two videoclips), but enough to keep their name at the very first line of the current events in the indiepop scene. Not only because of their successful shows last summer at ExpoAichi in Japan, but also because of the many international releases of their records. Two new records by NIZA have been released in the Asian territories, which have always been very keen on their music. "Canciones de temporada", the only official full-length album by the couple, has just come out in South Korea through Ales Music (a record label that has already released other labelmates like CAMERA OBSCURA). Ales Music’s release is a gorgeous digipack with a full booklet including the lyrics translated into Korean! On the other hand, Japanese label Rambling Records -which released to great acclaim "Canciones de temporada"- is currently releasing the compilation "Todas las canciones (1998-2005)".The album shares its beautiful artwork with another compilation previously released by Taiwanese label Avant Garden, but both the tracklist and even the title of the album (the one from Taiwan was called "Archivando mis recuerdos") are different. One of our favourite cars is the MINI: an urban, modern car with a gorgeous design. We loved the model from the 60’s, and we also love the renewed one. One of MINI’s sideprojects as a brand is the quarterly magazine MINIInternational, which is already on its 19th issue and on the verge to publish issue number 20.The magazine chooses a world city on each issue and, following the “think global, go local” motto, showcases its culture, people and pulsating life. We talk about them here because issue number 18 was dedicated to the city of Buenos Aires, and obviously they couldn’t help but including ENTRE Ríos among the chosen few to represent the southern capital. The magazine comes out with a CD, the first song of which is “Solo sonaba”, taken from “Idioma suave” by ENTRE Ríos.Other cities that have been explored by MINI’s official magazine are Barcelona, Montreal, Tokyo, Beirut, Estambul or, in the forthcoming issue, Hong Kong. Whilst we wait impatiently for a new album by LA CASA AZUL, the band announces some new special concerts to the delight of their many fans. As you will surely remember, the members of the band do not go out on tour: it’s Guille Milkyway, producer and composer of their repertoire, who takes charge and goes out playing their songs on stage. But it’s been too long since he last played live in Spain. Japanese fans had the chance to see a few shows by LA CASA AZUL last summer in Tokyo, but the news of these dates in Spain have fulfilled with illusion the hearts of many Spanish fans. With these concerts, both the band and Guille Milkyway intend to close the excellent period that was opened with their debut album, "Tan simple como el amor" (the single "Como un fan" stayed on the Spanish official top selling records list for four weeks in a row), and getting ready for their second long-player. In these shows, Guille will play all the hits, along with more intimate moments on the piano. A unique chance to enjoy the live performances of the beautiful, expansive music of LA CASA AZUL. Do not miss it if you can!

This next fall and winter, NOSOTRÄSH will play live the songs on their fourth album, “Cierra la puerta al salir”; in order to do this, the band has joined Malela, former member of the band (currently playing bass in GARZON and also on her solo project LE MOT), Mar Álvarez, a member of PAULINE EN LA PLAYA and former guitar player in fellow all-girl band from Xixon UNDERSHAKERS, and Xabel Vegas, member of MANTA RAY and singer guitarist with his own band LAS UVAS DE LA IRA.

NOSOTRÄSH have dedicated this summer to rehearse the show they will tour all over Spain, and will take advantage of the addition of such gifted musicians to surprise us all with a repertoire featuring songs from all their discography and new versions of their classic tunes, which make clear the intentions and renewed illusion of this new period for a northern pop band that has already arrived (in may 2005) its first ten years of existence.

These are the dates of their tour:

It won’t be long until we can enjoy the new songs by CAMERA OBSCURA, recorded in Sweden with the producer Jari Hapaalainen, of THE CONCRETES and Ed Harcourt fame. The album sounds great, and we’re sure it will let the band achieve an even greater success that their previous efforts, which have already surpassed the big figure of fifty thousand copies sold. But before we release "Let’s get out of this country", the band leaded by Tracyanne Campbell will pay a new visit to the USA for three live shows in March. The most important being undoubtedly their slot at the South By Southwest (SXSW) media and industry meeting in Austin, Texas. But they will also play NYC’s Knitting Factory, as well as Chapel Hill, North Carolina; the city where their American label Merge Records is based. On both these shows they will be supported by Maria Taylor.

"Suspended from class", a song by Scottish band CAMERA OBSCURA, has been included in the original soundtrack of "Imagine me & you", a refreshingly unconventional and witty comedy presented by Ealing Studios and BBC Films. The movie, starred by actress Piper Perabo in a lively departure as a quintessentially modern British woman, is about love’s myriad forms and constant surprises: on her wedding day, the bride discovers love at first sight …and falls in love with the wedding’s florist.

Perabo’s male counterpart is played by Matthew Goode, well known for having played Gerald Brennan in cult movie "South", directed by Fernando Colomo, but much better known internationally for his part in "Match Point", the latest movie by Woody Allen, along with Scarlet Johansson and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.

CAMERA OBSCURA being a part of this movie is even more interesting for us if we note the background of the movie’s Music Supervisor: Liz Gallacher won a Brit Award for her job in "The Full Monty", and was shortlisted for Film Music in 2003’s NME Awards for her job in "24 Hour Party People", as well as having worked with such directors as Atom Egoyan, Michael Winterbottom or Istvan Szabo. The movie’s good taste in music (noticeable from its very title, which takes the first line from "Happy together", the beautiful song by THE TURTLES which was also used by Wong Kar-Wai), is confir [ Read more ]

The first videoclip taken from "Melodrama", the fantastic debut album by romantic pop duo CORAZÓN, features the song "Padova": a colourful tribute to the Italian town where Carlos and Nando first met. The video has been directed by Entre Líneas (the team behind other Elefant videos of NIZA, ME ENVENENO DE AZULES, ENTRE RÍOS or LA MONJA ENANA).

The next videoclip by CORAZÓN is now being finished: it features the song "Jugando con el corazón", and it’s been directed by Gabe Ibáñez (who directed the videos of LE MANS and SINGLE). [ Read more ]

Asian markets don’t mean just Japan and thereabouts, although it is well known that Elefant Records has had an important presence in the Nippon market from a long time ago. Juice Magazine (www.juiceonline.com) is the most important music/clubbing magazine in Singapore (now also established in Indonesia), with an estimated readership that reaches 1.2 million.

We don’t know if they’re aware of the "Elefant Juice" compilation we released many years ago, but the thing is that they have just released a special feature on Elefant Records on their Label Junkie section, where they recommend their readers about the best and most interesting pop record labels around the world.

This is a new prove of the passion and level of acknowledgement Elefant Records receives from our faithful following in South East Asia, a place where we have always felt at home. [ Read more ]

If you come to Spain this winter, it’s quite possible you will end up buying something in one of the many stores El Corte Inglés has spread over the whole country. El Corte Inglés is the main big chainstore in Spain, and they’ve had the great taste to choose a song by Elefant Records’ recording artists’ LES TRÈS BIEN ENSEMBLE for their new publicity campaign, "Blancolor".

During the months of january, february and march, if you’re in Spain or Portugal you will probably hear Suzette‘s sweet voice on the TV and radio adverts of this chainstore, singing the song "À Hélène", taken from "Doux-amer", the debut album by LES TRÈS BIEN ENSEMBLE. [ Read more ]

Radio legend John Peel, the most influential radio DJ in the world of radio, established many years ago an yearly list of the best 50 songs he had played on his radio show that year, and called it The Festive 50.This year, the tradition goes ahead in spite of the sad news of Peel’s demise, and the BBC is already getting ready for a new edition of the Festive 50: a countdown that is eagerly followed by many a pop music aficionado, who are then favoured with (re)discovering excellent songs that might have passed unnoticed during the year, and have a quick look at what has been of worth in the year that’s almost over.

In the votings prior to 2005’s Festive 50 we found several songs from Elefant’s recent catalogue. Two bands have been selected, featuring two songs per band: TREMBLING BLUE STARS are in it with “The sea is so quiet” and “This is bliss”, and CAMERA OBSCURA (one of the most supported bands in John Peel’s show in the last years) participate with “I love my Jean” and “A marathon not a sprint”. Suzette, the singer with LES TRÈS BIEN ENSEMBLE, sings on the new forthcoming EP by Swedish band ACID HOUSE KINGS: “Everyone sings along with Acid House Kings” (as the EP will be called, as an in-joke twisting the title of the band’s latest album, “Sing along with Acid House Kings”).Suzette sings a French language version of the song “This heart is a stone” (its new title being “Ce coeur est de pierre”) on the record due to be released via Swedish label Labrador on February 8th 2006. Along with her we find other four versions by several well-known names in Scandinavian pop: Magnus Carlson, Lasse Lindh, Montt Mardié y Don Lennon.

You can find more information about this release in the band’s own website, ACID HOUSE KINGS – Web [ Read more ]

“Su recuerdo” is the title track on the second EP by SINGLE, the solo project by Teresa Iturrioz from LE MANS. This has also been the song chosen for her new, beautiful videoclip, which as it happened with the videos by LE MANS, has been directed by Gabe Ibáñez (from creative collective User T38).

The video has been filmed in Teatro Diéguez in Colmenar de la Oreja, one of the oldest and most beautiful theaters in the Madrid region. The nostalgic lyrics of the song are performed with elegance by young actress Maite Gete, in a perfect combination of music and image. Again, Gabe Ibáñez succeeds in illustrating with perfection the music written by the tandem formed by Teresa and producer/composer Ibon Errazkin. [ Read more ]

The Afyve top selling lists (the official lists of records sold in Spain) aren’t usually very attractive for the pop music lovers who share the taste for music we have here at Elefant Records. Too many marketing products there, bearing little resemblance with the music we all like and enjoy. But every now and then some good songs pop in and renew our hopes that one day things might change in the Spanish music biz: it is the recent case of “Su recuerdo"”, the new single by SINGLE, which has climbed directly to number 15 on the top singles list. That means the public have received with joy the release of this new single, which on its first week on sale features among the most asked for along with such bands as DEPECHE MODE or FRANZ FERDINAND (and many others we don’t dare to even mention).
