“El regalo”, on the other hand, pauses the album on a new song that is looking for its emotions under the umbrella of fatherhood, between THE BEATLES and Billy Nichols. Harmonies and impossible melodic developments create a bittersweet, melancholy mood.

“Arizona” steps it up a notch, highlighting THE BYRDS again, but this time spurred on by THE JAM. It’s a good demonstration of the perfect balance between perfect melodies, energy and rhythm, and a pure pop spirit.

“Saltos de esqui” represents life without a safety net, with the clear and present idea: “Ya está aquí el invierno que mil veces yo soñé / Ahora siento su aliento en mi cara al descender” (Now the winter I dreamed of a thousand times is here / I feel its breath on my face as I descend), once again with dreamy choruses and harmonies full of fantasy.

Here at Elefant Records we have no doubt that “Mi Universo” will be a key album in Alex Díez’s career. The album will mark a new highpoint in the indispensable musician’s career, which is already full of hits and memorable achievements. Recorded in Konk Studios, which were founded by Dave and Ray Davies (THE KINKS), and where people like Elvis Costello, THE STONE ROSES, THE BEE GEES and BLUR, among many others, have also recorded, it proved to be the perfect environment to capture all of the magic in these new songs.

And so, for such a special occasion, the corresponding tour is going to be totally different. “Internet Tour” will debut COOPER’s new songs.  Over the course of ten days, on ten different websites, the ten songs on the album will be debuted one by one, each with its own new video made just for this occasion. So, starting November 8th, we can discover, each day on a different website, Alex Díez’s new songs, with their marvellous videos that transport us to each song’s universe, [ Read more ]

“Primer día” is a song for his daughter that reflects all of the fears and terrors he’s seen, and he looks at his little girl, knowing that she’ll grow up with her own fears. But a song like this, in Alex’s voice, with those urgent, husky guitars… it’s one of the most marvellous things about this album and about COOPER’s career in general, they achieve just the opposite effect of all the fear in the lyrics, and give off the necessary strength not only to deal with those situations, but to do so with surprising vitality.

“Cortometraje” is a sepia-toned postcard, a new look back to see that time does not forgive, but the song is full of the vitality of the best power pop, with flavors from both sides of the pond ranging from groups like THE THRILLS or ATTIC LIGHTS to VELVET CRUSH or FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE. Among these cinematographic similes there are bittersweet lines like: “Rodaste esta secuencia / cambiando de reparto / Yo ya no tengo opción / en tu guión” (You filmed these scenes / with different actors / I don’t have a place anymore / in your film).

“Alicia” is a restless sleep, beautiful, with a beyond perfect concept of pop, not too far from a perfect cross between THE BYRDS, TEENAGE FANCLUB and Josh Rouse. Though the most striking thing about this song may be that the last lines of the song perfectly sum up the feelings of grown-up revelations that run throughout the album: “Que el mundo nunca será / como cuando está dormida / todo es tan triste y extraño al despertar” (The world will never be / like it is when we’re asleep / everything is so sad and strange upon waking).

The album starts off with a declaration of intentions full of force and energy (a live version of “Mi universo” was previously released as a special single for Record Store Day), under the sign of redemption and self-affirmation. “Quién pasó demasiado tiempo / adoptando costumbres de caracol / Ahora no queda más / que sacar tus tristezas al sol”(Those who spent too much time / adopting the habits of the snail / Now there’s nothing left / but telling the sun your sorrows) is a hit.

At the end of June they’re going back to London to begin recording their new album. They will travel with José M Rosillo, who will be in charge of production for the album, where they will record in nothing less than the Konk Studios, one of the most legendary studios in the north of London that got the KINKS’ Ray Davies started at the beginning of the 70s. At first, the studio, near Davies’ neighbourhood, Mushwell Hills, was a private studio for the KINKS’ exclusive use but it opened years later to other artists so that they could enjoy the magnificent studio’s equipment. The list of groups that have recorded in the Konk Studios in recent years is as long as it is impressive, from THE ARCTIC MONKEYS to THE STONE ROSES, including ELASTICA, SUEDE, THE CHARLATANS, THE BEE GEES, BLUR, MANIC STREET PREACHERS, MASSIVE ATTACK, DEPECHE MODE, PORTISHEAD and SPIRITUALIZED, among many others. As the culmination of their London adventure, on July 7th and 8th, COOPER will play two live “going away” shows in England with two other bands they are friends with. Soon, we will have more information available about COOPER’s new album, which will be called, “Mi universe”, as well as about their recording process and their concerts in London.

Every year, all around the world, Record Store Day is celebrated (www.recordstoreday.com). Record Store Day was created for and by music, and thousands of independent and specialized stores come together in order to make this great event happen, getting incredible, one-of-a-kind releases ready for the day. Here at Elefant Records we are congratulating ourselves for celebrating this special day in Spain for the first time, and we’re going to have a really special release. This coming April 16th, Record Store Day 2011, in eight of the most reputable independent Spanish record stores – Alta Fidelidad (Oviedo), Amsterdam (Valencia), Beltza (Donostia), Discos Revolver (Barcelona), Escridiscos (Madrid), Marcapasos (Granada), Más que Música (Gijón) and Power Records (Bilbao) – a limited-edition vinyl single by COOPER that collects live sessions of the songs “Hyde Park”, “En el Sofá”, and the previously unreleased “Mi Universo”, as well as a cover of Elvis Costello’s “Alison” will be released. It is an exclusive limited-edition release that will also have a corresponding digital version that can be acquired via the usual platforms, and which will help us, for the first time, to take part in such an important initiative from our country, in order to honor this special way of understanding the music that specialized and independent stores offer.

Extracted from the introduction to Club 45. By Alex Cooper“This book is not trying to reflect the whole mod universe, it is only focused on my devotion to the white 60s groups (…) It comes from the need to talk about what I’ve learned, with the hope that others will enjoy it as much as I do. I’ve been really lucky. As I’ve never felt nostalgic for an era I never knew, I’ve lived my life without being envious of other people’s lives. I have great memories of past times, and those memories aren’t borrowed, they’re my own. But it’s also true that other people, famous and anonymous musicians, who have excited and inspired me all these years, have marked my path. You will find some of them when you turn this page. I hope you enjoy yourselves in your visit to Club 45.

Prologue by Álex Oró [Chelsea Publishers]Álex Cooper, one of the Spanish pop scene’s fundamental musicians as the front man of such emblematic groups as LOS FLECHAZOS, and most recently as COOPER, presents his first editorial work, titled Club 45. In it, and with 90 songs that serve as a pretext to portray people and an entire effervescent era of pop culture, Cooper serves us up a sixties session that covers 1964 to 1968. Along with the representative protagonists and diehards of that emerging scene (the collection begins with The High Numbers, and [ Read more ]

Hello Everyone!Another year has passed, a special year for us as we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the label, and we did it the best way we know how: releasing a ton of good music. We put out 22 new releases in total – 13 albums and 9 singles. It was an intense year in every way it could be and a year in which a little bit of everything that can happen, happened. And despite all of the problems that the music world is going through we managed to survive another year and we are full of hope and excitement about 2010.

We are aware of the requests and the things that fans of the label are most worried about and we are working hard on all of it in order to try to have everything organized and updated in the first few months of the new year, so that it is easier to be up to date with everything that’s happening with our groups and our label. We’ve been working on the new Elefant website for the last few weeks, a new website that will maintain a similar design to the old website, but that will be much easier to use, much more intuitive, faster, and clearer. Yes, we are getting rid of Real Audio and you’ll be able to listen to the songs without having a player installed, and you’ll be able to change quickly and simply from the site in Spanish to the site in English from any page. We’re also going to have our new Elefant On-line store with great improvements. We’re closing deals to be able to have the entire catalog available on Spoti [ Read more ]
