Tracklist:

Abandoned Islands ( A side 18:16 minutes)

Suspended Animation (B side 17:57 minutes)

It features two brand new long-form compositions – "Abandoned Islands", whereby a repeating series of simple phrases relies on increased effects to achieve the movement within the piece, and "Suspended Animation" featuring the aforementioned Barker-Davies and a close mic-ed portable cassette player providing a subtle rhythm, a nod to the intended format. Both recordings were made in late February 2017 and both feature field recordings made in Liverpool in April 2016.

Our beloved Laetitia Sadier is still making great collaborations all over the world, broadening a songbook that is more and more complex but always highly beautiful. Here at Elefant Records we have been lucky to be witnesses to such work, like those with Giorgio Tuma, which were absolutely exquisite, or with Iko Chérie, and which were preceded long before that with appearances with MOUSE ON MARS, THE HIGH LLAMAS, FUGU, COMMON, LUNA, BLUR, ATLAS SOUND and TYLER, THE CREATOR, among many others, in addition to the long list of projects she was fundamental in (STEREOLAB, MONADE, MCCARTHY, UILAB, LAETITIA SADIER SOURCE ENSEMBLE, LITTLE TORNADOS… ). But this collaboration with the Brazilian group MOMBOJÓ, which is what finally brought about this new group called MODERN COSMOLOGY, is different than the rest of the collaborations in a lot of ways. And in order to tell you how this 1000-copy numbered-limited-edition 10” vinyl EP called “Summer Long” came about requires putting several things into context.

MOMBOJÓ started in 2001, in Recife (Pernambuco, Brazil). In 2002, they were already one of the big names on the line-up of the 10th edition of Abril Pro Rock. In 2004 they released their first album, "Nadadenovo", which garnered attention for its influence from the mangue bit movement that started 10 years earlier. In 2006, after signing with the Trama label, they released “Homem-Espuma”. The band won two APCA [ Read more ]

We told you a few weeks ago about the new digital single by Lia Pamina, “Better Off Without You”, and now we’re here to introduce, as we told you we would, another new single. This time, it’s in 7” (500-copy numbered-limited-edition, transparent vinyl) format, starring the song “Sycamore Tree”, one of the best songs on her fantastic debut album “Love Is Enough”, and backed by three previously unreleased songs composed – like the majority of the album – by Joe Moore (THE YEARNING, THE PERFECT KISS).

“Sycamore Tree” is exquisite. The evanescent keyboards remind us of bands like THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and BROADCAST, while the classic spirit, the percussive bass and the clavichord take us to the psychedelic period of THE BEACH BOYS. Marvelous. “Nobody's Baby” fits into the sadder, more melancholic part that was already present on the album. Again, the clavichord and the piano take the lead on a song with baroque airs, which could perfectly be sung by a saddened, solitary Sylvie Vartan, while she sits by the window on a rainy evening. Once again, the elegance of Joe Moore’s arrangements takes things to the highest emotional levels. The B-side opens with spirit and pluck with “Wrap Your Love Around My Heart”, a pop-soul song with clear echoes of Dusty Springfield. And to wrap things up, “One Step” returns to the psychedelic, spacey airs of the first song [ Read more ]

We are full of good news. One of our favorite bands is back with a super-Italian but also internationally-spirited album under their arm. The thing is, Carlos Valderrama grabbed a hold of his FITNESS FOREVER and, after that psych-funk journey from that surprising “Cosmos”, dove head-first into an exercise in Italian-disco, flooded in equal parts in dance and invocation. “Tonight” is a path toward the dancefloor, flooded with the diverse references already in play on their previous albums. From Morricone to the BEACH BOYS, from Lucio Battisti to Adriano Pappalardo, from Serge Gainsbourg to Marcos Valle. From the most popular names in disco music (CHIC, TAVARES, MFSB or even Michael Jackson himself), to the most peculiar and fascinating references coming from Italian territory (NUMBER ONE ENSEMBLE, KANO, LE STREGHE or EVA EVA EVA), with that current touch and attitude that gives them just a drop of STEREOLAB, JUSTICE, THE GO! TEAM or METRONOMY.

To make an album like this they didn’t only rummage through their own roots, they also made a strong connection with their French neighbors: Anna Jean, vocals and guitar from JUNIORE, lends her voice to the group on “Arbre Magique” (with Juliette David and Joackim Polack of PEARL & THE OYSTERS joining in on backing vocals), while Vincent Mougel, front man of KIDSAREDEAD gives us an unforgettable “Tonight”. And to finish things off, the album was mastered by &ldquo [ Read more ]

Is it possible that, after more than 30 years in the music business, Duglas T Stewart has, in 2017, made his best albumí It is clear that the element of surprise in albums like “C-86” and “Life Goes On”, or even in their first singles on the label, “53rd and 3rd”, or the 1992 single “Serious Drugs”, now feel very far away. But objectively, the collection of songs included on “BMX Bandits Forever” could be the best thing in their whole discography. Without letting go of their identity, or even of their obsessions and hang-ups.

If you are just arriving here with the whole 30-year career waiting to be discovered, we should remind you of a few things first. BMX BANDITS is the alias of Duglas T Stewart, who before that was in THE PRETTY FLOWERS (is “Sing Street” based on themí), the band he shared with Frances McKee (THE VASELINES), Sean Dickson (THE SOUP DRAGONS) and Norman Blake (TEENAGE FANCLUB, BMX BANDITS). OASIS did their first UK tour dates supporting BMX BANDITS as a favour from Stewart to Creation label boss Alan McGee. Francis MacDonald (TEENAGE FANCLUB, NICE MAN) was a member of the group and Duglas’ right-hand man until 2005.  Kurt Cobain said that if he could play in any other group, it would be in BMX BANDITS. The Guardian says “Britain’s ultimate cult group.” Another major magazine like Q says "Gentle genius." And even with all of that, he has alwa [ Read more ]

This May, “La Maldita Primavera” – the movie directed by Marc Ferrer and starring PAPA TOPO – will be released. Marc is the group’s regular director for their latest videos and directed his first movie, “Nos Parecía Importante”. The movie is a musical comedy about a reptilian that travels to Earth to find out if the human species is a threat to the rest of the galaxy, and if they’ll have to exterminate us for it. This is inspired in PAPA TOPO’s song “Je Suis Un Monstre”, from their last album, “Ópalo Negro”, released in June, 2016. Beyond science-fiction, “La Maldita Primavera” is a movie about fun, pop music, and how fleeting romantic passion and youth are. Adrià, Júlia, Óscar and Sònia surround themselves with an extensive cast, including Barcelona’s trash diva, Mónica del Raval. Among Marc Ferrer’s esthetic references you can find the outrageous, trashy movies of John Waters, the simple perspective of Eric Rohmer, the way of making movies with little-to-no budget like early Almodóvar, or the comic distance of Hong Sang-soo or Buñuel

The movie opens in the D’A FILM FESTIVAL BARCELONA, May 4th at 22:15 in the CCCB Theater, and before the screening PAPA TOPO will give a mini-concert. To celebrate the highly-anticipated release of this film, Elefant Records is soon going to release th [ Read more ]

THE PRIMITIVES are back. Paul Court, Tig Williams and Tracy Tracy’s band continue to prove that they are in their second youth. After that exceptional album of covers called “Echoes and Rhymes” and their fantastic last album “Spin-O-Rama”, Elefant Records is releasing a magnificent 10” vinyl maxi-single with four new, original songs by the band, that can keep up with any of their greatest hits.

The guitar that starts off “I'll Trust The Wind” evokes some of the band’s great moments, with a marvellous riff and an incomparable dynamic. Their contagious melodies plus that British touch are evident throughout. “Squeak 'N' Squawk” is another bullseye, which echoes once again (and why not) other bands’ such as THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN or PRIMAL SCREAM’s finest moments, with a straightforward nod towards early classic PRIMITIVES. “Oh Honey Sweet” opens the B-side with their more pop facet, less distortion and wonderfully light, with Paul’s voice illuminating everything. And to finish, so that we don’t forget about some of the British band’s consistent references, “Same Stuff” closes things on a high note with overtones of garage, surf and blues, and a noisy and solid bass riff.

These songs sound as fresh as if they had been composed in the band’s first year of existence. The release will be a 1000-copy limited-edition 10” vinyl.

TRONCO is a unique and very special group. That’s why it’s impossible to write something normal about them. A brother and sister form a band in a parallel solar system. Because TRONCO is from another planet. It’s the perfect first album for our “New Adventures In Pop” collection. They’re new, they’re young, they’re fresh and daring, but above all they are overflowing with talent. Conxita Herrero (Barcelona, 1993) draws, makes comics, fanzines, and writes poems and songs, and she is really good at all of it. Last year she published “Gran Bola De Helado” with Apa Apa Comics, her first book with 17 short stories, which became one of the most interesting comics of 2016. She has worked for VICE and El País Tentaciones, and she has collaborated on a ton of underground fanzines. Her work has appeared in publications and anthologies both nationally (Fosfatina) as well as internationally (Kus, Fantagraphics). She’s a total activist. Pure dynamite. On the other hand, Fermí Herrero (Barcelona, 1999) is happily in his last year of high school in Prat de Llobregat. When he grows up he wants to be an actor and/or make-up artist and/or engine driver. He enjoys good weather, life, and fruit. He is interested in ancient history and culture in general. As they themselves say, “he smells good and is a good dancer”. His favorite food is toxic people and he is in favor of churros and the sexual revolution. [ Read more ]

Elefant Records’ “New Adventures In Pop” collection has been giving a first chance to countless projects coming both from within and from outside Spanish territory. Groups that are now well established, like PAPA TOPO, BAND À PART, LOS BONSÁIS, KOKOSHCA, EL PALACIO DE LINARES, BELLE GHOUL, AXOLOTES MEXICANOS and Lia Pamina, among many others, all got their start with this collection.

And now it’s time for two old friends who are starting a new path. And the thing is that OS PEREGRINOS’ music is like a road movie. These two characters with so much personality within the national pop scene are Charlie Mysterio (LOS CARAMELOS, among many others bands) and Roger De Flor (OS SILVESTRES, BANG 74), who get to know each other based on a series of “pilgrimages” between Galicia and Madrid. What started with Roger testing his luck and asking Charlie for help on a song has turned into a series of exchanges, trips, shifts, kilometers, and so, so much inspiration. The result is this “Canto Peregrino”, which is a gem that transports you far beyond the ground covered by our two protagonists, and which will be released as a 500-copy limited-edition grey, 10” vinyl. This Mini-LP gets things started with a delicious instrumental song that gives the album its title. It’s like a hymn for passersby, evoking the landscapes of Galician sea inlets in the precious harmonies and traditional percussion. Thejourneybegins [ Read more ]

These are good times. Lia Pamina’s first single is already a collector’s item. Joe Moore is super inspired with THE YEARNING’s and THE PERFECT KISS’ new releases. And Lia Pamina’s “Love Is Enough” album was the perfect communion of those two anxious spirits, creating an air of romanticism and delicacy, which has won over fans of Claudine Longet,Françoise Hardy and Astrud Gilberto. And the singles aren’t going to stop. For now, we have a digital single with two songs – the already known “Better Off Without You”, included on the LP, and the previously unreleased “Record Collection”, with both the lyrics and the music written by Lia herself.

“Better Off Without You” is a song that takes part in the best tradition of Scottish folk-pop, with CAMERA OBSCURA as a reference, and with her trademark delicious chorus and exquisite arrangements. “Record Collection” is an example of fifties pop where Lia Pamina pays her own homage to music, the love of music, and vinyl records. It is an agile and direct pop song, likeable and delicious.

The video, as before, is directed by Coraland Javiof the group BAND À PART, which is a total guarantee for these musical parameters. And this won’t be the last news about Lia Pamina and releases related to her debut album. Keep an eye out on your digital media.

THE PERFECT KISS is a new project led by the multifaceted Joe Moore, whom many of you already know from his “classic pop” facet fronting projects like THE YEARNING and Lia Pamina. THE PERFECT KISS is another exercise in composition and arrangements for our Brit, but this time with a radically different register. “Disconnect” is a mini-LP of electro-pop, recorded with only a keyboard from 1985 – the Yamaha PortaSound PSS-450, that his friend Jeanie Pugh’s father gave him. His companion on this new adventure is Holly Vanags, a singer from Faringdon, Oxfordshire. Her stimulating voice, delicate and intelligent, perfectly adapts to the musical and conceptual universe of THE PERFECT KISS.

Using only a keyboard to record the eight songs on the album had countless consequences. Obviously, it affected the sound of the album – minimal, delicate, but agile and with a profoundly pop spirit. The thing is Joe Moore reminds us more and more of Stephin Merrit, for his versatility, his openness and prolificacy. In fact, THE PERFECT KISS, somehow, reminds us of FUTURE BIBLE HEROES. Though it also reminds us of AU REVOIR SIMONE, LALI PUNA, and even THE HUMAN LEAGUE. Another consequence had meta-musical effects. By using a keyboard as the only recording instrument, with its presets, sounds, and programmed drum machine, they couldn’t use a computer quantifier. This means that the recording was deeply organic, and highly technically difficult as fa [ Read more ]

CAMERA OBSCURA is one of the key groups in Elefant Records’ history. After their first album, they joined our label with that marvelous “Underachievers Please Try Harder”, and later put out the equally incredible “Let's Get Out Of This Country”. Together, we climbed upward in a trajectory full of unforgettable moments.

That’s exactly why they couldn’t be left out of our collection of reissues for Elefant Record’s 25th anniversary. This collection began in 2014, when we celebrated 25 years as a record label, and so far we have released 16 of the 25 collections promised.

THE SCHOOL, LA CASA AZUL, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, LE MANS, JUNIPER MOON and LOS FLECHAZOS are just a few of the stars of these reissues. This time, we have decided to do a very specially release; both “Teenager” and “Keep It Clean” were singles taken from CAMERA OBSCURA’s second album, and they were only released in the CD-Single format. So, now they are going to be released on vinyl for the first time – two 7”, color-vinyl, 1000-copy numbered and limited-editions. Each single will include two A-sides (two songs taken from “Underachievers Please Try Harder”), accompanied by two songs from their CD-Single that haven’t been included on their albums. And as we said back then, it is impossible to get tired of listening to CAMERA OBSCURA; they have the magic necessary to combine the eternal and the imm [ Read more ]

2016 has been a big year for LINDA GUILALA. Music media like Waves For Masses (Italy), The Blog That Celebrates It Self (Brazil), Indie Rock Mag (France), Platten Vor Gericht (Germany), Sounds Better With Reverb (USA), DKFM (USA), Allmusic (USA) and Louder Than War (UK), to say nothing of the Spanish media like Discogrande, El Caleidoscopio Musical, Ultrasónica, Fantastic Plastic Mag, Mondo Sonoro Galicia and La Merienda, among many others, have named “Psiconáutica” as one of the best albums of 2016, some even putting it at number one. David Gedge (THE WEDDING PRESENT) himself named it as one of his favorites on the British webzine “Velvet Sheep”. These are only some of the highlights we are celebrating with the release of a new digital single taken from the album, in this case starring the song “Abstinencia”, which includes the special collaboration of Marco Maril (APENINO), programming the bass.

On this occasion, the song has a surprising and provocative video: cold and abstract, recorded in a church and full of catholic symbols. This new audio-visual document directed by Javi Camino (Magnetova) is a new reading of one of the most potent songs on the album. It’s disturbing, to say the least. On the B-side, we have a new song, “Mucho Más Joven”, where they make use of their expertise in noise, ambiance, and feedback, preserving marvelous melodies and a chorus that does more than captivate – it h [ Read more ]

To say that Joe Moore is prolific is to say not nearly enough. To his ever-growing collection of releases under the name THE YEARNING, you have to add the fantastic Lia Pamina album he produced and composed, as well as several new and very different projects that will come out this 2017, like THE PERFECT KISS’s first album, full of tasty electro-pop songs, to be released this March.

His productions are becoming more and more well-known all over the world, from one side of the planet to the other, from the US to Japan. Their signature effusive, romantic, and elegant sixties-style pop is already a well-known trademark! That’s why the release of “From Dawn Till Dusk (2011-2014)” is big news. Big for all the newcomers, because they can get their hands on the completely sold out first singles, EPs and Mini-LPs; and big for the more experienced fans, because they can get access to hard-to-find tracks from compilations and B-sides, and even some previously unreleased songs; and because it’s a way to enjoy this huge collections of songs as a whole, available together for the first time on CD Digipak.

“From Dawn Till Dusk (2011-2014)” includes songs from their first two Mini-LPs, “Jukebox Romance” and “Still In Love”, the B-sides from the singles “Baby Be Mine” and “If I Can't Have You”, the song they shared with THE SCHOOL on the split-single for Kingfisher Bluez, the song that was re [ Read more ]
