We are in the midst of an intense period of releasing new groups here at Elefant Records. Our collection “New Adventures In Pop” is on fire, and this is without a doubt proof of the effervescent Spanish pop scene. The latest new thing is a Digital EP with four songs from the duo CHAVALES, formed by Daniel Rodríguez from Mallorca and Javier Paredes fromExtremadura. They met in Madrid after Daniel was working on his solo project (DANIEL DANIEL) and Javier had a big collection of lyrics written. That’s how, thanks to Martín Spangle’s (producer of the Mini-LP “Movidas” by CARIÑO) participation on technical controls, they were able to develop the songs that make up this first eponymous release.

Their sound is highly danceable electronic pop, but at the same time it is elegant, knowing how to perfectly mesh sounds of the past and the most current sounds, with daring, carefree, clever lyrics. On “Empieza El Plan” we can detect echoes of PET SHOP BOYS and the bold lyrics of LOS PUNSETES. “Las Plantas De La Terraza” moves closer to some of today’s tremendously addictive commercial music like Robyn or CHARLI XCXor ultra-indie groups like TV GIRL, CLAUD and BOY PABLO, but it also gives us a taste of the well-done elegance of the peppiest ORANGE JUICE. This song is also the star of their first video, an audiovisual work directed by Diego Jiménez (AXOLOTES MEXICANOS, CAROLINA DURANTE, CARIÑ [ Read more ]

A little more than a year ago we released a very special album from a new project called THE LAST DETAIL, a super group, formed by FUGU and A GIRL CALLED EDDY. Or in other words, Mehdi Zannad and Erin Moran. Just over a year later, here we are releasing an album that many people didn’t ever think would every come, the second A GIRL CALLED EDDY album. While her debut came out in 2004 to much critical acclaim and was produced by Richard Hawley, it has been a while to say the least. But here is “Been Around” and yes, it was definitely worth the wait. Very much worth it.

Throughout her career she has collaborated and provided vocals on projects as varied as Ron Sexsmith (“Exit Strategy Of The Soul”), SUPER FURRY ANIMALS, to French superstar Phillip Katerine’s indie classic “Parlez Vous Anglais, Mr. Katerinecategoría”. Her debut album saw her out on tour supporting acts as diverse as Josh RitterRufus Wainwright, THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH and THE CURE. And with that first record Moran has gathered a rather impressive list of fans: from Jane BirkinGilbert O’SullivanTracey Thorn to Robert SmithDon HenleyJarvis Cocker and Burt Bacharach to name just a few.

“Been Around” has arrived looking like a classic. Referencing her hero’s from Laura Nyro, and Van Morrison, to Steely Dan and P [ Read more ]

DIE KATAPULT continue giving us the capsules that comprise their first album “DKXD”. This time, we have the song that closes the album, one of the most special songs from their debut: “Für Einen Moment”. This song alternates between electronic martial tones in a Teutonic key that the album is full of, with innocent and dazzling pop choruses. This, together with their iconoclastic universe, has led to an absolutely tremendous video, directed by Xoxé Tétano (of LOS GANGLIOS, and who has already directed videos for the duo). In the video, a priest represents the Catholic church in its fight against alcoholism, which is represented by Anna and Elena themselves. This pep talk is mixed with anthropology and chemistry classes, and proof of the acts carried out by our protagonists in the most Castilian bar you can imagine. All of this comes together to give us an absolutely brilliant visual conglomerate. There are no words to describe it. This is an absolutely imperative ingredient to complete the very unique and groundbreaking work of DIE KATAPULT. Come on in and have a look.

They made us wait, but we finally have the second album from Erin Moran, otherwise known as A GIRL CALLED EDDY, after that marvelous debut in 2004 produced by Richard Hawley, and the 2018 album with THE LAST DETAIL. “Been Around” is one of those albums that can be sniffed out as classic from quite a distance, and while we could confirm the elegance and echoes of Laura Nyro on the Single that is also the title-track for the album, we are using another song as an advance for the album now. “Someone’s Gonna Break Your Heart” is one of those pop songs that should be playing endlessly on the radio. It is a clear tribute to Chrissie Hynde and her PRETENDERS, with a song full of life and an unforgettable chorus, with enduring, dynamic, impeccable lyrics and majestic arrangements. It is truly marvelous.

The vitality of the song is perfectly reflected in the video that comes with this Digital Single. The actress Sita Pieracinni – in a magnificent exercise that places her somewhere between Buster Keaton and Debbie Reynolds, between the comical and the sunniest elegance – peels away the different levels of daylight (what a marvelous exercise in light this video is) while trying to put on a jacket in a spacious and empty apartment. This is a magnificent piece of work directed by Blair Young, who is also responsible for videos from illustrious Scottish groups like CAMERA OBSCURA, BELLE & SEBASTIAN, Emma Pollock, THE PASTELS, FRANZ FERDINAND an [ Read more ]

The end of the year is coming, and it has become a tradition to anxiously await the musical bits that are being prepared for us to the New Year’s Eve special “Cachitos De Hierro Y Cromo”. And we can give you a little hint of what to expect. Among the special guests, we are going to hear PAPA TOPO with a very special cover of SONIA Y SELENA. It is an ultra-danceable song that also includes a small tribute: the music base is a sample of the B-side of the first Single from the forgotten group GOMA DE MASCAR, “Soñando En El Cielo”, which is turning exactly 40 years old. We are taking advantage of this occasion to release this Digital Single that is a celebration of parties, of New Year’s, of the anniversary of GOMA DE MASCAR, and that we will be hoping to be with you while you listen to music, one more year. After that first Digital Single, “Colegas”, that we announced a few weeks ago, FRED FREDBURGUER is back with a Christmas gift for us. It is a song full of the idea of going back home for Christmas, with the melancholy and excesses associated with these controversial dates. “No Hay Muchos Regalos (Pero A Mí Me Da Igual)” is a punk-pop demonstration with touches of noise – fresh, immediate and unbiased. It is the perfect thing to lighten and liven up the most insolent nights of these holidays. [ Read more ]

The Single that completes LINDA GUILALA’s international trilogy (at least for now) is finally here. After the English label Sonic Cathedral and the German label Dreams Never End, now it is the North American label Test Pattern Records’ turn. They are one of the most well-known shoegaze labels in the world, home to bands like SOFT SCIENCE, FAWNS OF LOVE and DESARIO. And exclusively for them, there are two new songs, where the group’s pop facet explodes, without leaving behind the distortion or the walls of sound.

“Será Más Fácil” reminds us of their best anthems, connecting evocations and insolent punch in the choruses, reminding us of an impossible mix of the earliest songs from SILVANIA, BEACH HOUSE, SECRET SHINE, SLOWDIVE and LOS PLANETAS. “La Inseguridad” even includes a few “parapas” that somehow bring the music closer to STEREOLAB’s concept of pop development, while maintaining the auditory evocation of MY BLOODY VALENTINE or even PALE SAINTS.

At Elefant, we will have a few physical copies of the album, and we will handle the worldwide digital distribution. And of course, just like the previous Singles led them on tours around half of Europe, these new songs will take the Galician trio to the other side of the pond, in the not too far future. Eva, Iván and Mari continue to show us that they are at the highest level of inspiration, with constant releases, no ups and downs, and with the [ Read more ]

The singer and composer from Castellon, Lia Pamina, continues cultivating an extremely interesting discography, full of collaborations with inspired producers and song writers, like Dario Persi (RADIO DAYS) and Joe Moore(THE YEARNING, THE PERFECT KISS, Cristina Quesada). This time, she has joined forces with OS PEREGRINOS, Charlie Mysterio’s and Roger De Flor’s band, to bring us this precious Christmas song, while they prepare an EP of songs based on poems by Rosalía de Castro, which will be released on Elefant in 2020.

For these special dates, they are giving us a cover of a song by the singer Dana, of a Single released in 1975 under the title “It’s Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas”. And on it, we discover a Lia Pamina who multiplies her enthralling capacities with her sweet voice in Spanish, accompanied by exquisite harmonies and minimal but extremely effective arrangements, capable of transporting us to the melancholy that so many of us associate with the Christmas holidays. The glockenspiel, the tambourine, the memories, the loneliness… It is so precious!

This advance in the form of a Christmas present gives us a glimpse of what is going to be another unforgettable collaboration, with special magic and chemistry. In the meantime, the music will continue to help make Christmas be a little less melancholy, or at least a little less lonely.

Here at Elefant, we love it when we hear something new, personal, and exciting. And when we heard GOMET for the first time, we freaked out. We had never heard anything like this. It is endearing and disturbing, exciting and disconcerting, all at the same time. It wakes up feelings and sensations that are completely new, and that is very difficult to do at this point. Because they have turned the world upside down with a very simple, but instantly powerful concept. There is a certain ethical code, one that is not written anywhere and that is more than debatable, that separates children’s music from adult music. Or music for adults that children can enjoy too. Or music for adults from a child’s point of view. But, what would children’s music made for adults sound likecategoría What would it be like in world in which all the fears and feelings of a child are described, all their hopes and joys, their contradictions, with all the complexity and depth of an adultí And what if this is done to the beat of dense and solid electronic popcategoría This, in a nutshell, is GOMET. Or, in other words, a duo from Valencia formed by Marco Silvy-Leligoisand Alejandra Tomás, who are releasing their first EP, “Ser Mayor Es Un Rollo”, on Elefant Records.

They define themselves as an experimental children’s pop group, which came about spontaneously and casually, as if the group line-up were a game. Their name references the round, colored stickers use [ Read more ]

We were absolutely impatient. We haven’t had any news about THE SCHOOL for a long time, but now they are finally back with an EP with three Christmas songs, at exactly the right time and in the best possible way. These songs play with the forced happiness associated with these holiday dates, to give them a touch of bitterness and loneliness, and remind us why they have broken our heart so many times over the years.

But things begin with a surprise. “Happy Christmas (Don't Tell Me It's Over)” is a mid-tempo punk-pop smash, full of great melodies and vocal harmonies, with a dirty, distorted sound somewhere between THE AISLERS SET, RAMONES, ALVVAYS and THE SHOP ASSISTANTS. Making the most of the holiday wishes to anxiously hope that the feared abandonment does not happen on such important dates. Liz wrote the song in just four minutes the night before going into the studio to record the Single. The chorus, as always, is impeccable.

“Shouldn't Be Alone For Christmas” goes back to the sound of girl-groups from the sixties, with Phil Spector’s wall of sound and the best arrangements, on one of the best songs with Harri and Liz doing a vocal call and response, and the whole group enveloping us with those celestial choruses. This also happens on “It Won't Be Christmas Without You”. Evoking the best of THE SUPREMES and THE RONETTES, with that collection of absolutely delicious arrangements and s [ Read more ]

After “No Puedo Dormir”, we are releasing an advance from the imminent third album by Soleá Morente, her first album on Elefant, which will be titled “Lo Que Te Falta”. This new Single is called “Cosas Buenas”, and it is a song written by Ana Fernández-Villaverde (LA BIEN QUERIDA) and which includes a cast of collaborators and musicians that are a real luxury.

The three members of CARIÑO, Alicia, María and Paola, are in charge of the choruses. The guitars are handled by Víctor Iniesta (EL BICHO, TOMASITO, LA MARI) and Eduardo Espín Pacheco (a flamenco guitarist from a legendary bloodline – his mother is Carmen Linares). On bass, we have Julián Méndez (LOS PLANETAS, CHECOPOLACO); on piano – absolutely delicious on this song – is the master Carles Viarnés. José Ubago (PRADO NEGRO, NAPOLEÓN SOLO, JOSÉ BONAPARTE) adds his touch to the choruses, and LAS NEGRIS and Antonio Carbonell add theirs to the “jaleos” and the “palmas”, and Popo Gabarre and Ginés Pozas are in charge of percussion and other various “jaleos”. The line up makes it clear that there is a mix of pop, indie and flamenco, halfway between two scenes that meet with this unique artist and magnificent song. And to top it all off, production is handled by David Rodríguez (LA ESTRELLA DE DAVID), mixing by Sergio Pérez (PEGASV [ Read more ]

Here at Elefant, we continue to be committed to new values in pop music with our “New Adventures In Pop” collection, which has released groups that are now a consolidated part of the musical reality, like PAPA TOPO, CARIÑO, KOKOSHCA, AXOLOTES MEXICANOS, Lia Pamina, BAND À PART and TRONCO, among many others. This time, we bring you FRED FREDBURGUER, a band that brings a fun, fresh punk-pop offer to the table. They are somewhere between JUNIPER MOON, TCR and COLA JET SET, with a dash of the C86-style indie of groups like THE SHOP ASSISTANTS, THE HAYWAINS, THE ROSEHIPS and THE FLATMATES, and that American touch of groups like TIGER TRAP, ALVVAYS, THE AISLERS SET, VIVIAN GIRLS and ILLUMINATI HOTTIES. Their name pays tribute to the well-known cartoon character from “The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy”.

The initial line-up of the group was Fernando (drums) and Alba (guitar); in the summer of 2016 Olaya (AXOLOTES MEXICANOS) joined on bass and Miguel, a friend, on guitar. The line-up did not last very long, but in 2018, they picked things up again, adding Fernando’s brother, Raúl and his partner, Elena, to the line-up, on bass and drums, respectively. Around that time, they recorded “Colegas” for the first time. In 2019, the final push came: Fernando and Alba plan their wedding for September and what better idea for a souvenir for their guests than a CDR with their s [ Read more ]

The obsession NOS MIRAN has with looking deeper into the most irrational and inexplicable aspects of the human mind has just reached a clear turning point. Their first full-length, “Todo Se Repite”, has managed to intertwine that terrifyingly dreamlike and disturbing universe with absolutely marvelous electronic pop songs. The result is spectacular, an album that is enjoyable, intimate and hard to define. As if FAMILY made the soundtrack for a David Lynch film. Come closer and take a look.

Sergio Rodríguez and Marta Quintana have developed a type of treaty about existential anguish through a strange state somewhere between asleep and awake, where everything is wrapped in a cloud of dreaminess. In fact, “Aquí, Antes” talks about those strange feelings dreams give us, about déjà vu, the feeling of having already been in an unknown place. “No Existo”, talks about the pain of being alive, and the recovered “Contigo” (what a wonderful exercise in dark disco music) talks about the pain of loving. “Árbol De Sombra” is a break, a BROADCAST-esque sonic passage (with some programming that reminds us of BJÖRK on “Homogenic”), clear and light, the pleasure of being at peace with oneself. It is a special oasis on such a singular album. And “Au 79” is precisely a good example of the two sides of this album, of the multiple perspectives it offers us. Somewhere between [ Read more ]

By now, we are not surprised when a LA BIEN QUERIDA album is so well received by both the media and the public in general. After “¿Quécategoría” and “Me Envenenas”, “Miedo” adds another stone to the album “Brujería”, which projects a strange, ambiguous shadow. The album is a treaty on love based on all things esoteric and magical, and the horror stories gain more and more of a starring role. The video for “Me Envenenas”, directed by Carlos Vermut, was a three-minute exercise in horror, and “Miedo” is here to surpass this idea, bringing to the table the very spirit of a large part of the album. This time, the video is directed by Santi Capuz, who has directed some of the videos for RUSH WEEK, Soleá Morente, THE LAST DETAIL, NEVVER… It shows us the evolution of a relationship: from the happy moments to the break-up. And this is where the good stuff comes in. In impressive synchronization with this tremendously intense, epic mid-tempo, the break-up is portrayed as if it were a process of exorcising ghosts, with infinite references to horror classics like “Nightmare On Elm Street” and “Evil Dead”. The video is a key piece of the puzzle to get inside the universe LA BIEN QUERIDA is showing us here on this “Brujería”, and discovering it is a tremendously exciting exercise.
