Yes, “In the morning we’lll meet” is the most complicated and ambitious album that Giorgio Tuma has come across. When you deal with the musical fantasy that is hiding behind his notes, it is impossible not to evoke that colossal work of Brian Wilson’s, “Smile. Today, that figure of the song-writer as a goldsmith who pampers his melodies and arrangements with the meticulousness of a watch-maker needs to be reclaimed and dignified, and figures like Giorgio Tuma are indispensible in that process.

An album that, like all good trips, has come into being all around the world (countries like Canada, Norway, The U.S…. have seen these songs grow), to ultimately point straight towards home as the final destination. As the author himself admits, “In the morning we’ll meet” is an album of folk-jazz sung in English, but watered with typically Italian melodies, on which childhood and memories work as an emotional motor. And because we couldn’t expect anything less, the figures of the great Italian composers appear on the scene: Alessandro Cicognini, Nino Rota, Piero Piccioni, Piero Umiliani, Ennio Morricone, and singers like Luigi Tenco, Piero Ciampi and Lucio Batisti stop by to keep the references we already know like Stan Getz, Vini [ Read more ]

We at Elefant are congratulating ourselves for three new releases from the singles collection “New Adventures in Pop”, a series of limited edition 7” color vinyls that is more successful than we could have imagined, selling out all the releases so far. This is exactly why we are so excited to introduce three new groups, with three distinct sounds that will definitely give people a lot to talk about. On the one hand, the quartet from Leeds, JUST HANDSHAKES (WE’RE BRITISH), one of the most commented names on the indie-pop scene in Britain; that great hope of electronic pop from our country that are ED WOOD LOVERS; and finally, the rhythmic imagination and electronic evocation of FOXES!.

After leaving the scene in 2005, Bobby Wratten’s band definitively stopped their activity, with an album that seems more like a miracle than a farewell. Video “Hoy”http://bit.ly/gjCtqY

1“Noviembre”: We start things off with clapping and the box drum, the synthesizer comes in little by little and an Arabic cry sets the boats sailing and starts the blood pumping. What better way of creating the feeling of intense intimacy than with the strongest contrasts: “El frio y el calor se están tocando / cogidos de la mano paseando” (Hot and cold are touching / walking around holding hands). Setting a sepia tone that we’ll never forget. Two minutes and we are already beginning to melt.

2 “Hoy”: The advance track from the disc is born of Mohamed Soulimane’s Arabic violins, which reaffirm the feeling of a passionate woman, with that interlude that will stay indelibly branded in the mind of any mortal:“¿Qué será la muertecategoría / me preguntaste un día / y no te supe contestar. / Si la muerte es mirar y no verte, / que la muerte es mirar y no verte”.(What will death becategoría / you asked me one day / and I didn’t know how to answer. / If death is looking and not seeing you / that death is looking and not seeing you). Devastating.

They are nothing less than a phenomenon, and nobody can deny it. They are one of the clearest and most shocking examples of the effect of the internet. And they have accumulated a lot of achievements since the world first heard of them: Everett True, the prestigious journalist from the New Musical Express, Melody Maker and other sources… makes “Oso Panda” the song of the day on his super popular blog; they are the stars of the Elefant party at Primavera Sound, invited by MySpace; they appear, drawn by Ortega y Pacheco, in El Jueves, which causes a commotion on the indie-pop scene; their videos “Oso Panda” and “Lo que me gusta del verano es poder tomar helado” overloaded Youtube with hits – more than 20,00 in just a few hours – which made it the second most viewed video on the whole website and the number 1 video in the music category (currently, “Oso Panda” has been played more than 400,000 times). As a result, television stations like Sol Musica play it constantly and it even got to be number 1 on MTV’s Top 20; Paulita’s and Adrià’s blogs have an important number of followers, who praise their good and widely-ranged tastes in music. Above all, they sold out the entire printing of their first single, “Oso Panda” (which is already a collector’s item), in just over two weeks – which is amazing – and it was sold all over the world.

After how much we enjoyed their singles, and that incredible full-length, “Loveless Unbeliever”, nobody can claim that THE SCHOOL doesn’t deserve a privileged position on the pop podium, with their sixties tendencies that people would be hard-pressed to get them away from. The way this Cardiff-based band has dealt with northern soul, sixties pop, girl-pop and sunshine-pop has earned them a great reputation and a legion of fans in even the most unexpected corners of the earth. They have uncountable hits. Rough Trade has included their songs on favorite-artist-of-the-year compilation albums not once, but twice. Their album has been distributed all over the world and we have licensed them to independent labels in the States, Korea, Japan, Australia, the Phillipines… They have given concerts on the most respected stages, especially highlighting their performances at Indietracks Festival, Lemon Pop Festival and South Pop… Their music is included on the soundtracks of a ton of movies, TV series and ad campaigns all over the world. And best of all, they gave us a collection of unforgettable songs, presided over by Liz’s sweet voice, called on to remain in the memory of everyone who loves stories about falling in and out of love.

And like the cherry on the top of this already great sundae, we get a surprise gift. “Hoping and Praying” arrives in digital format with really appetizing content. This new release will be presided over [ Read more ]

This coming March 21st the latest release from Luis and Belén goes on sale. Luis and Belén, those restless instigators of the Madrid nightlife, have momentarily stepped aside from L-KAN in order to work on a more organic, fresh and colourful sound in this new adventure that they baptized as BLA. In this case we are talking about a digital single whose main star is that “Yo soy como Portugal” that we already heard on their debut album, “La mejor enfermedad”, and whose fantastic video, directed by Llaüt Digital, was launched just a few short weeks ago. The video shows Belén walking through a series of fun, but at the same time terrifying, misfortunes.

This new release incluyes a version of “Yo no soy esa” by Mari Trini, on which, with their usual dose of humor (that game of confrontations with the single’s title), but at the same time full of intensity and daring, they take on a total revisioning of the Spanish classic from ’72, with those distorted guitars marking the rhythm. Another of the single’s great gifts is a previously unreleased track, “La casa de las chicas”, a wonderful song that moves from classic seventies disco to contemporary techno-pop with surprising ease and originality, leaving us with a sunny, lively song (one of BLA’s strongest qualities) that is both danceable and full of precious melodies. To wrap things up, a remix of “Yo soy como Portugal”, on [ Read more ]

Luis Cerveró, one of the most important and innovative audiovisual producers, made the video for “Hoy”.

On February 14th the digital format of “Hoy”, the advanced single for the new album, will be released, and the song’s video will be released at the same time.

The advance track from the disc is born of Mohamed Soulimane’s Arabic violins, which reaffirm the feeling of a passionate woman, with that interlude that will stay indelibly branded in the mind of any mortal:“¿Qué será la muertecategoría / me preguntaste un día / y no te supe contestar. / Si la muerte es mirar y no verte, / que la muerte es mirar y no verte”.(What will death becategoría / you asked me one day / and I didn’t know how to answer. / If death is looking and not seeing you / that death is looking and not seeing you). “Monologo interior” has reached, on its own merit, the highest spots on the “Best of” lists for 2010 in the majority of the music magazines and specialized media. The San Sebastian duo’s second album is classic and extraordinary, a collection of singular and intimate songs. Their concerts have become an extension of that shocking personality and that unique universe; in fact Rockdelux placed their live show as the second best in the country on their 2010 “Best of” list and they explain: “SINGLE’s concerts are infrequent, but greater in number than they were two years ago. They are also varied, talented and, not only now but starting ages ago, theatrical. Teresa sings better and better all the time and her wardrobe changes…” They concluded with by proclaiming them “A national treasure”. Those wardrobe changes have a proper name, and it is Carlos Díez Díez, one of the most important, radical and alternative fashion designers in our country. Carlos has become, and has been for some time now, a crucial part of the group’s image, and he is also an important protagonist, along with Miguel Gutiérrez, in the group’s new audiovisual adventure, their new video “Fotos”.

Ana has surrounded herself with friends to create “Fiesta” and give the final brushstrokes to an album that is going to be timeless. Pablo Zamora was in charge of the photography; Eric Coll and Sergio Ibañez, who founded Setenta, their own design studio in 2007, designed the album cover; Luis Cerveró, one of the most important and innovative audiovisual producers, made the video for “Hoy”, the album’s first video; and David Rodríguez (BEEF, LA ESTRELLA DE DAVID) was once again in charge of the impeccable album production and arrangements, proving his special, eclectic and unique talent for blowing up Ana’s extraordinary compositions.

On February 14th the digital format of “Hoy”, the advanced single for the new album, will be released, and the song’s video will be released at the same time.

March 7th is the date for the album release in digital format on all Internet platforms, and on March 22nd the album will be released physically in stores. As always, the label’s fans and our regular online buyers can get the album in physical format from the online store 15 days before it’s released in stores, so on March 7th in addition to the digital release, the album will also be available on vinyl and CD through Elefant.

History is vindicating “The nightmare of JB Stanislas”, the cursed disc that Nick Garrie published in 1970 and which barely got to see the light of day. But as if there were a rush of poetic justice, the album is experiencing its second youth and finally getting the recognition it deserves, thanks to the magnificent new edition that Elefant Records worked on last year, which rises to the occasion as a double CD with many extras. A youthfulness that the work’s author is also experiencing, since, after many years of silence, he released “49 Arlington Gardens” two years ago, with the invaluable help of some of the big names on the Scottish scene, like Duglas T. Stewart (BMX BANDITS), Norman Blake (TEENAGE FANCLUB) and Ally Kerr.

The news this time is about audiovisuals, because 42 years after its release, “The nightmare of JB Stanislas” will have its first video for the marvelous “Wheel of Fortune”. Our friends at Llaüt Digital (also responsible for other videos for Elefant’s bands, like PAPA TOPO or the latest one from BLA) have made a beautiful homage to that magical music, recreating a tape that evokes the psychedelia of the 60s, the old pop movies with their touches of humor, a contemporary world intermingling with Victorian personalities, colored by the usual wheel of fortune. It is an interesting step forward in the unstoppable movement of [ Read more ]
