We are dying for you to hear “Nainonai”, the second album from TRONCO. It is different and special – one of those small albums that are pure gold and wind up becoming part of that unique selection of music that makes up the soundtrack of your life, the same way that NOSOTRÄSH’s “Popemas” or LE MANS’ debut did. That’s why, while we’re waiting, we are bringing you this new advance single that makes all the reasons we think this album is so special clear. Because “Volveré” has the pop essence of Adam Green, the endlessly childish air of THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, the love of roots that show the bits of playful rumba that Peret would definitely be crazy about. Because in less than two minutes, with the naivety of a child’s smile, it gets right to you and melts you from within.

Like that magnificent video directed by Laura Pascual, where Conxita finds herself in a sort of “Groundhog Day” that takes her from one place to the next, like on of Wes Anderson’s colorful tales, where fantasy and the mundane come together in harmony, like the “Worlds of Coraline” with a dose of sugar. Because that is how they are – Fermí and Conxita, Conxita and Fermí, like a speck of dust floating in space: it seems so normal and like you can just go right up to it, but then when you see it close up, you realize that there is nothing else like it in the whole world.

TRACKLIST: 01 Zombi

“Hacer El Amor” was a breath of fresh air, a surprise that put us on the trail of a very special project from two of the most inspired and prolific artists on the Spanish indie scene. “Zombi” confirms that something big is coming after summer. A new country-folk gem – delicate, traditionalist, another declaration of love, moving. But the most important thing is without a doubt how the personalities of these two great composers is highlighted, in the music, and especially in the lyrics. The feeling that they are baring themselves to us and showing themselves in the most direct, honest way, but also with such a special sense of humor (that is just who they are, rightí). Maria Rodés, that folk singer with the sweet, nuanced voiced. David, that eclectic illustrator of songs, capable of taking us to unknown places in the most surprising company. And the wedding vows. Listen to those vows.

And the magnificent video by Aitor Urbaneja reflects all this marvelously. With an absolutely magnificent use of light and photography (thanks to Toni Llobet), and a 3/4 format that imitates the 16mm, we see our protagonists moving through absolutely deserted touristic coastal towns, and their empty karaokes, cheap motel rooms… Something like bringing “Fargo” to our most idiosyncratic Mediterranean coast. And then the magic happens: shared looks, walks, and that hotel room dance that blows your mind. We don’t [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Estoy Por Ti (Feat. Ciberchico & Rare)  02 No Te Vayas Aún (Feat. Leftee)

It feels like just a few days ago that we heard the first solo songs by Míriam, the singer and guitarist for LISASINSON. With these new songs, she has made perfectly clear her intentions to inhabit very different musical parameters. Her alliance for this new Digital Single with CIBERCHICO, RARE and LEFTEE, all members of the Valencian collective Toxic Pop, have made sparks fly and magic happen. Hyperpop, fancy trap, futurepop, europop… The cocktail is being mixed, and out of the shaker, a few radically danceable, generational anthems have been poured. But let’s take it step by step, because there is some back story here.

It all began back in October, when Pablo (CIBERCHICO) met Míriam (LABORDE) on Instagram (it is no less appropriate even though it’s typical). There are musical overlaps and they decide to work together. They have to meet at CIBERCHICO’s house, where Pablo (RARE) and Dani (LEFTEE) also live, and where they have their studio. The chemistry between the four of them is just perfect, and they decide to start working on a song. CIBERCHICO has a brand new baseline under his arm that his producer, RARE, made, and a chorus to go along with it. Míriam loves it. They get together again in Alboraya’s home studio, they talk, they share ideas, they write and play a brutal “Estoy Por Ti” together just l [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Follas Novas  02 ¿Por Quecategoría  03 Lúa Descolorida  04 Paz Desexada

After that precious Christmas collaboration in 2019, the combination of Lia Pamina’s delicious voice and Charlie Mysterio’s and Roger Arias’ (OS PEREGRINOS) elegance and inspiration is back, to give us this small, exquisite gem. This limited-edition vinyl Single is inspired by the work of the Galician poet and novelist Rosalía de Castro, where once again folk sounds, Brazilian music, and infinitely exquisite arrangements come together. The singer from Castellón lifts the Galician writer’s words to the heavens, and the result is, yet again, a dream for even the most hard-hearted music lovers.

“Follas Novas” could be used to define what beauty is. It is so simple it’s disarming. Delicate arpeggios, dream-like harmonies, a pristine chorus that perfectly crowns the whole song’s meaning. Which is nothing other than the beautiful idiosyncrasy of living. It is a lucid and magisterial demonstration that when poetry and music come together hand in hand, their association can be as powerful as that of image and sound. But the triumvirate reaches even higher levels with the animated video by Raquel Calvo, who once again makes a statement in sensitivity, esthetic fantasy and creativity. The perfect images for “Follas Novas”. It is impossible to escape the excitement.

TRACKLIST: 01 Live With Excuse  02 Telepathy

While the Japanese duo, STILL DREAMS (who we were introduced to recently with that fantastic single, “Ultra Doomed”), gets their debut on Elefant Records ready, we are advancing a few of their songs as Digital Singles. And “Live With Excuse” is an absolutely spectacular appetizer. It is one of the more intense songs from their upcoming Mini-LP, “Make Believe”, full of dense, epic, euphoric textures, but with an absolutely addictive and dreamy melody. As if a Phil Spector of the XXI century had made a beyond perfect pop album with BLONDIE. We can see this in the video, directed by Keisuke Maeda, that has Ryuta and Maaya surrounded by nature, playing music in a river, later letting themselves be bathed in fireworks at nightfall. It is an epic explosion of euphoria, working from the pop essence of groups like M83 and ARCADE FIRE. A wall of sound hiding major melodies, or a reformulation of MY BLOODY VALENTINE’s universe through synthesizers.

But this single also comes with a previously unreleased song, “Telepathy”, which lets their clubbier facet loose (and this time the leading vocals are from Ryuta), and evokes NEW ORDER at their most festive and luminous. All of this with an incredible new manga-inspired cover by KNN.5.

TRACKLIST: 01 Que Te Pires

AXOLOTES MEXICANOS have reinvented punk. As they have been shelling out new songs from their imminent new album, “:3” (colon three), they have been showing us that they have been able to effervescently express the experience they have acquired in these last few years as a group, though their various side projects (CAROLINA DURANTE, CONFETI DE ODIO, TEMERARIO MARIO, Stephen Please, NO FUCKS, etc), and above all though Juan’s work as a producer. The thing is, “Que Te Pires”, the third advance from the album, is the epitome of all of this. It is a punk attitude that is full of rage, exacerbated, out of control, with touches of contemporary R&B, reggaeton, autotune and influences of some Japanese groups. The lyrics hold nothing back at all. Fury and aggression, power, no restraint. With people insisting at this point that innovation is not possible anymore, AXOLOTES MEXICANOS pull this ace out of their sleeve where the reformulate the most authentic and nascent punk codes in the most incredible way. And they take this all the way to the video, made by the Colectivo Súper Sentai and with the collaboration of the actor Manuel Macías: terror and Halloween, blood and violence, fear and loathing, noise, fury. The AXOLOTES are a voice of the present, built on the foundations of a history that they have always been willing to tear down.

TRACKLIST: 01 Amigos para nunca (confía y te la lían)

There was a song on “Va totalmente en serio…” that really caught our attention. It was a song that went against all the typical good vibe manifestos, that had magical harmonies and screams that made all the red high-voltage warning lights flash. AIKO EL GRUPO, as young as they are, are already experts at doing exactly the opposite of what everyone else wants them to do. As if it were a game. And best of all, in the end, you cannot resist telling them they are right. And the video, directed by David Vega (LA BIEN QUERIDA, NEVVER), for “Amigos para nunca (confía y te la lían)” makes it all clear. An adventure-esque trip to the mountains that turns into a very special Battle Royale. Filmed with a 16mm Bolex to give it that special texture, the video’s setting lets our AIKOs do what they do best – have a good time. Even if it is with(out) friends. And there you have “Amigos para nunca (confía y te la lían)”, with its catchy chorus and generally unstoppable addictiveness.

TRACKLIST: 01 Fin De Año

“Lo Que Te Falta” has been one of the biggest albums of 2020, as we can see by both the public’s and the critical reactions. Soleá has given us a magnificent album, which has helped us get through some hard times, and a good part of the responsibility for this is our own David Rodríguez (LA ESTRELLA DE DAVID, LA BIEN QUERIDA, BEEF, etc.), who wrote some of the songs on the album and who has also been active in his other projects with LA BIEN QUERIDA and Maria Rodés. That’s why they are getting together to bid the year farewell with a very special gift – a cover of a song by ESTRELLA FUGAZ, Lucas Bolaño’s group, who is a regular musician in David’s circle. It is a song originally released in 2019 on the album “Un Sendero Fluorescente”.

This all came about because one day, David himself sent the song to Soleá. “Listen to this song; it is by a friend of mine”. On the bus, on the way to Granada, Soleá listens to the song and totally identifies with that declaration of frustrations and desires that could come from so many musicians and lovers of music. With its ability to be realistic and beautiful and the same time. With the way that the light creeps in bit by bit. But even beyond that, it seemed to tell her own story: “Hacer un viaje lejos / Sola / Para cantar algo nuevo / Publicar otro disco / Y después presentarlo / Que lo e [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Soy Rebelde

LA BIEN QUERIDA is one of the most well-respected artists on the national panorama. Her incessant activity, her own work, her collaborations with or compositions for others (the most recent with Soleá Morente) have worked to develop a very special aura around her persona. And with this song she takes her next step. It is a dark and epic version of JEANETTE’s “Soy Rebelde” which will be included in the ad campaign for La Prohibida, a new cider from the Mahou brand. The ad, produced by Canada, really makes an impact, constantly pushing the limits of social conventions and taboos in the most provocative way, with an elegant esthetic that grows with astonishing intensity thanks to Ana’s cover, a recording produced by Luis de las Heras along with Yuri Méndez (PÁJARO SUNRISE). We would never have thought that the song by Manuel Alejandro (one of Ana’s favorite songwriters) would reach such special forms, while holding onto the delicacy of her voice, but heightening the epic and lyric qualities to unsuspected heights. Don’t wait to listen to it.

“New Adventures In Pop” collection [Issue 049]

It was imperative that the first physical release from AIKO EL GRUPO came out as part of our New Adventures In Pop collection (release number 49 already!), dedicated to interesting emerging bands. And the thing is, their youthfulness and the freshness of their sound are reasons that in and of themselves line up perfectly with the philosophy of this series of releases, which in this case is a precious 500-copy numbered-limited-edition orange 10” vinyl Mini-LP.

AIKO EL GRUPO got started in a very unusual way. Tere and Lara knew each other from school, when they lived in Valle de Camargo (Cantabria). Bárbara finished her schooling in Lucena and came to Madrid for university, and that is when she met Tere (who is also part of YAWNERS and REPION), and the three start going to the rehearsal space a lot, where little by little, and driven by bad relationships and alcohol-infused nights, really interesting things start happening. They played their first show in Cantabria and Jaime, who was in the audience and playing guitar at the tim [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Canción Para Mi Crush  02 Perdona Mamá

LISASINSON’s new video tells us everything we need to know about who they are and what they sing about. There are no friendships like the ones you have when you are 20. There are no adventures like the ones you have when you are 20. There is no moment in your life like when you are 20. However, “Canción Para Mi Crush”, this song we are releasing in advance of their upcoming Mini-LP as part of our “New Adventures In Pop” collection, is a significant step forward in their sound. The urgency, the immediacy, the self-assurance, the irreverence are all still there, of course, but we are looking at a song that is much more permeable to modern sounds, with a more complex structure, and with a touch of punk mixed through the whole thing. The result is practically unheard of, and also meets all the requirements of the generational anthems. Something to listen to again and again.

What’s more, with this Digital Single, we are also advancing a previously unreleased track that will not be included on the already mentioned Mini-LP but that, curiously, will give it its name. “Perdona Mamá” is a tribute to rebellion – straightforward and unrepentant. Punk rock straight to your veins, with its dose of bile and its liberating spirit. So catchy you can barely take it, electricity that makes our eardrums melt. Watch out for their streaming; we [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Vice Et Werther

COUR DE RÉCRÉ is a French group that is somehow a product of our times. The trio formed by Stan, Quentin and Chloe have found themselves obligated, for life’s many vicissitudes, to continue working on their songwriting online. Bytes of their songs have travelled to Avignon, Santiago de Chile, Canada, Toulouse and Paris. But after several years of intense activity on SoundCloud, and an EP (“Éponyme”) released in December 2018, they are going to take their next steps with Elefant Records.

And what better than our collection for new talent, “New Adventures In Pop”, to give shelter to some songs that dive into a bizarre, eclectic synth-pop, with touches of acid and, according to Stan himself, influences coming from Romain Guerret (DONDOLO, ALINE), LA MONJA ENANA and FREEZEPOP (he has been listening to so many Elefant albums since he was really young), THE PIROUETTES and DENIM. What we have here is a first taste of what will be their first Mini-LP with Elefant. And what a taste it is. “Vice Et Werther” is a twist on the story by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, but this time, Werther’s partner leaves him because of the excessive closeness with his best friend, and accepts the situation with the thought that “a friend is something very important in life, while love is just child’s play”. And this baroque story does not change the fact that this song is made to be d [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Nunca Estoy (Mai Estic)

A few weeks ago we discovered a new facet of Míriam (LISASINSON) with the addictive “Llámame”, under the moniker LABORDE, a special project that opens new paths in the singer’s registers. It is a personal initiative, open to much more contemporary references and influences, and as proof we have this cover. Míriam takes C. Tangana’s song, “Nunca Estoy”, to Catalan; she gives it a sad, dreamy air; she locks it up in a room full of naïve sounds and broken dreams, and opens the doors for everyone who is looking for something with a different sound, something that saves us, like music has always done.

With Pépe working on the technical aspects and production, this new digital release comes with a video directed by Victoria Herranz and Mar Espinosa (and yes, María, who completes the initial LISASINSON combo also participates). In the video, with a resolution that evokes older cameras and aims to highlight the songs melancholy, we can see Míriam on the El Saler beach, combing her hair in the waves and letting herself be carried by the sea.

There is no doubt that this is just the beginning of a new, promising, personal, and totally unique proposal. Stay tuned.
