“New Adventures In Pop” collection [Issue 048]

We knew this was coming. It was important that our collection of new talent, “New Adventures In Pop”, was the umbrella from under which CHAVALES’ first physical release came. And the thing is, “Tu Foto En El Techo” is a Mini-LP of nine numbered-limited-edition songs that includes the best songs that we had already seen on digital releases, and some new and previously unreleased songs. And the result is a compilation of the best current synth-pop, but with so many eighties influences.

Among the songs we already know, three are taken from their first single. “Las Plantas De La Terraza”, with its ultra-addictive chorus and its programming that sounds like something from the PET SHOP BOYS and Étienne Daho. That nod to reggaeton on “No Me Lo Creo” with that ultra-pop chorus. “Me Conformo” and its dream-like base full of resounding low notes, along the lines of ELECTRIC YOUTH. And songs we already heard as independent singles, the amazing, hyper-energetic story of “Ernesto”, and the speedy, almost punk “Ey, Que Estoy Aquí”.

Among the new songs, there is “Dame Veneno”, with [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Quien Tú Quieres Que Sea

We will never get tired of saying it: NOS MIRAN is one of those unique, inimitable groups. The cocktail that makes up their sound and lyrics have a really special effect on the listener, and the proof of this is that debut album called “Todo Se Repite”, which is an audio and existential journey, with lyrics that dive into the darkest aspects of the human mind while developing euphoric electro-pop melodies that are made for dancing to. “Quien Tú Quieres Que Sea”, their new Digital Single taken from that fantastic debut album, is solid demonstration of this. It uses an ultra-catchy euro-pop base to talk about the torment of relationships, and the insecurities, doubts, expectations and frustrations that this torment causes. It is a song to listen to a thousand times, to get to the heart of what is hidden in its many nooks and crannies. What Sergio Rodríguez, Marta Quintana and Laura Antona are giving us here is full of intentions. Two pieces of evidence: the first, the video, once again commissioned to Antonio Máiquez, in which Sergio, Marta and Laura, each one identified by a color, wander through a building with white arches that is full of mysteries, which is used to develop so many powerful and ambiguous visual metaphors. The second piece of evidence is the cover, made by Martaherself, which is directly connected to the video: three arches, each one a different color, and under [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Ducati (Feat. Cariño)

If there is an impertinent, witty, imaginative, fresh song on “Lo Que Te Falta”, the album that Soleá Morentereleased with Elefant Records, that song is “Ducati”. Its impossible rhymes, its rumba-styled ease, and also that unbiased exercise in self-determination and reproach, all make up a very tasty dish for any fan of pop and flamenco stylings. And the thing is, that ending with the rhythmic clapping and CARIÑO singing the chorus that begs: “Papi, ya no quiero Ducati / Sólo te quiero a ti / Si te pillo infraganti / Te juro que te mati / Papi, ya no quiero Ducati / Sólo te quiero a ti / Si te pillo infraganti / Llámame religiosamanti” (Papi, I don’t love Ducati / I only love you / If I catch you in flagrant-eh / I swear I’ll kill yeh / Papi, I don’t love Ducati / I only love you / If I catch you in flagrant-is / Call me praying mantis), deserves its own throne. Specifically, a throne and a praying mantis are significant inspiration for the video that comes with this Digital Single. Filmed by Silvia Coca, who had already worked with Soleá on a previous occasion, the video shows a woman in her kitchen, eating everything that comes off the stove, intercut with images of a praying mantis, all with a gritty air that fits this very special song like a glove. It is fun but painful, carefree but sharp. Something that is within the reach of [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Volverte A Enamorar

Each new song that we get from LISASINSON raises our serotonin levels. Their self-confidence, their solid and open-minded sound, their freshness and energy, all make us soar in the barely two minutes their punk-pop shots usually last. “Volverte A Enamorar”, their new Digital Single, is an immediate hit, and in it, our protagonists overflow with vitality and rays of light, the same as groups like HELEN LOVE, THE FLATMATES and AXOLOTES MEXICANOS. In the video, made by Victoria Herranz and Mar, we can see the band doing what they know how to do best – have fun, play music, make jokes, hang out together and share that authentic and unique joie de vivre. This is a perfect song for this sunny summer that is just about to come to a close, and as the new advance of what will be their highly anticipated debut Mini-LP, which they are in the final stages of recording and which will be released very soon on a beautiful 10” color vinyl.

TRACKLIST: 01 15 Minutos  02 La Merienda  03 Acústica

The songs from FRED FREDBURGUER’s eponymous Mini-LP are still playing in our heads, and we already have a new digital release with new songs. The star here is a song taken from said Mini-LP; “15 Minutos” is the most special song on the album, with a more complex structure but maintaining its pop spirit 100%, and that serves as the perfect tool to talk about high school romances. The song comes with a refreshing video directed by Daniel Cuenca (LA CASA AZUL, Soleá Morente, Cristina Quesada, RUSH WEEK, THE PERFECT KISS…) where we can see the group playing the song, on the one hand, and then on the other, acting out the lyrics in a North American fifties-style hamburger joint, like something from “American Graffiti”. The esthetic is the perfect complement to the concept and the group’s sound, and it ends with a huge party with lots of popcorn.

What’s more is that this single includes two previously unreleased songs. There is “La Merienda”, the song that is used as the theme song for the fantastic radio program directed by Agustín Fuentes on Canal Extremadura, who is also the director of the inimitable Contempopránea Festival. And there is also “Acústica”, a very special cover of SIBYL VANE, from their “Mermelada De Tomate”. Curiously, the song is not included on the album’s tracklist, b [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Come To Me  02 Tokyo In Spring

A few weeks ago we gave you an advance of the new THE YEARNING album, a release with multiple new things: the disco music from the end of the 70s as a leitmotiv, the appearance of Luci Ashbourne substituting Maddie Dobie on vocals, and an advance starring “Only When I’m Dancing”, the song that will be the album’s title track. This single also came with a video directed by Santi Capuz (THE LAST DETAIL, LA BIEN QUERIDA, Soleá Morente, NEVVER, AIKO EL GRUPO…), where we could see a group of girls getting ready to go out for a hedonistic night of dancing and partying. Now the new advance is here, “Come To Me”, and with it, we finish the story that we got started in the last video.

This is a mid-tempo that pays tribute to the Joe Moore’s deep admiration of ABBA, and dresses it up with traces of chanson and light Italian music, and soundtracks from erotic movies from the 70s, where Luci’s silky voice fits like a glove on this song full of melancholy. Because at the end of the story we see precisely that: the sadness before the imminent sunrise, the exhaustion of the final stretch, and the search for real emotion that can transcend the night.

And what’s more, this Digital Single comes with a previously unreleased song, “Tokyo In Spring”. It is another exercise in disco music, with that typical, syncopated piano, dreamlike strings, and a temperature [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Nuestro Momento

We are still working though some of the best moments of “Templos Y Neones”, the latest release from BAND À PART, which came about after their trip to Japan. And now we have come to “Nuestro Momento”. Coral and Javi have here a wonderful example of electronic pop that at times reminds us of that “Electronic Renaissance” by BELLE & SEBASTIAN: arpeggios, huge melodies, a solid chorus. This Digital Single comes with a new video made by Coral herself, where she creates the virtual world of a videogame that frames the story of the song. Fantasy and emotional dystopia. The esthetic reminds us a bit of the incredibly fun “Tron” and where those chromatic scales of violets and purples once again make an appearance, in the bright neon lights that have so marked the development of this most recent album from BAND À PART. It is a dreamt-up universe all their own, close to Shibuya.

TRACKLIST: 01 Un Gatito

Ana Fernández-Villaverde is back and this is the first song she has released since her most recent album, “Brujería” came out (September 2019). Moving easily from one genre to the next, she is here with this new single, “Un Gatito”, an instant anthem that also serves as an appetizer for her new album, which she is already working on. The song talks about loving someone for who they are, with all their faults. Twisted nuances and foggy ambiance surround the completely uncensored description of a person – but without leaving out the sweetness. She leaves us with verses like: “Un oasis en el desierto / Un calendario de adviento / Un niño perdido en un aeropuerto / Un día de fiesta y un bar abierto / El caminito que me lleva al huerto / Con la verdad al descubierto” (An oasis in the desert / An advent calendar / A lost child in the airport / A holiday and an open bar / The path that leads me to the garden / With the truth exposed). It is impossible to say so much with so little. It’s one of those songs that gets stuck in your head and never goes away.

Produced by Alizzz and LA BIEN QUERIDA, mastered by Álex Ferrer, and with a cover designed by Mario Rivière (who already worked on the cover of “Brujería”), the song also comes with a stupendous video, by David Vega (RAYDEN, Paula Cendejas, ST. PEDRO, ABHIR, MAKA, Eva Ruiz), in which, in a kind [ Read more ]

TRACKLIST: 01 Jody

We have already told you about the wonder that was “Been Around”, but the album by A GIRL CALLED EDDY is turning into a phenomenon on many levels. We know about the support it is receiving from critics, but its fan base is growing at an incredible rate, the way the best of news spreads: word of mouth. Or, keyboard to screen; as you wish. It is a combination of impeccable songs and a handful of marvelous videos. This new single of “Jody” is joining this handful now. With echoes of Laura Nyro, it is one of the brightest songs, musically speaking, and the saddest, lyrically. Erin Moran’s farewell to her friend Jody is represented here full of color and full of class, in a new show of prodigious animation by Pooley (Woom Studio). Vintage and current interact with the song’s lyrics in an absolutely marvelous visual work, which also pays homage to the graphic designer Saul Bass. We are enjoying this album so much. It is such a pleasure to discover it down piece by piece.

TRACKLIST: 01 si mirarte es delito q me lleven a prision

We could not wait for this moment to arrive; we finally have a little advance of what will be rebe’s first Mini-LP for Elefant. This album has been forming slowly for months, with so much love and affection, and it will come out after summer on a delicious color vinyl. It is an excellent collection of songs that we are so excited to share with all of you. But life’s greatest pleasures have to be enjoyed little by little, and this is a great appetizer. The thing is, each new song from rebe is a whole new experience. Her mix of irreverence and elegance, of silliness and sensuality, her dreamlike world that is so her own and inimitable, make the magic of her songs seem eternal. “si mirarte es delito q me lleven a prision” has some of the best ingredients: classic pop and current sounds, echoes of melodic lounge, analogue synthesizers, a crystalline voice, and above all, a lot of attitude. This is an absolutely delicious song – terse and sweet on the surface, but evoking the figure of the femme fatale taken to a whole new universe.

But, rebe is more than just songs, she is an esthetic, an image, light, pleasure, audiovisuals; she is a world, a universe, she is herself. That is why the cover and the video for this exquisite song are part of a whole that you have to dive into and let yourself be irrevocably carried away.

TRACKLIST: 01 Ernesto

CHAVALES are unstoppable. Almost monthly singles, authentic proof of the best synth-pop made here. Songs that are advances of their anticipated debut Mini-LP, which will be out in September on a precious 10” color vinyl. This time, “Ernesto” is a song full of extremely fun cynicism, with impossible rhymes, telling us the story of a constructor with very few scruples. And when we play the song, we can hear LA MODE, SINDICATO MALONE and SÉPTIMO SELLO, but also HIDROGENESSE, CABIRIA and PAPA TOPO, and our ankles start to move and we get an uncontrollable urge to start dancing. What’s more, this Digital Single comes with a video directed by Silvia Coca (Soleá Morente, AUTO SACRAMENTAL, Joe Crepúsculo, AARON RUX…) which somehow recreates the dreamlike universe of the story of our protagonist, Ernesto, in a carefree, fun way, very in line with the song. The mixing and production are handled, once again, by Martín Spangle and Lia Marín is back to do the cover, with a fantastic illustration by Daniel and Javier.

We insist. Unstoppable. Inspired. So. Much. Fun. We want them to keep their date with us. Like a daily dose of vitamins that we need to help us face each day.

TRACKLIST: 01 Finde

NEVVER is back with a new Digital Single, probably one of their most accessible songs so far. Their bucolic landscapes inherited from shoegaze, and the bases and phrasing closer to hip hop and trap are still there, as is that unique language that is all their own in a musical scene that has nothing even remotely similar. But “Finde” also has a catchy, euphoric, exciting chorus in a song full of nostalgia: evoking summer, the desire to repeat good times, the resignation that they will probably never happen again. This resignation includes the collaboration of a very special lyric video, with marvelous animation and a solitary and still view from a window. A window from which we can see an empty city as the night moves through it, where shadows reign and a very singular new ambiance is created. Because the music of NEVVER is an ambiance and “Finde” is, probably, their musical culmination.

TRACKLIST: 01 Dancing Tonight  02 Dancing Tonight (Nos Miran Remix)

Another single. The thing is, “I Think I Heard A Rumour”, the album that brought together the creative forces of Cristina Quesada and Joe Moore, is full of ultra-danceable bull’s eyes. “Dancing Tonight”, our protagonist, melancholic and heartbreaking, and which we had already described as the perfect mix between “Words” by F.R. DAVID and “Don’t Cry Tonight” by SAVAGE, also enjoys echoes of COLLEGE and CHROMATICS, and even a very contained DAFT PUNK. “Dancing Tonight” is also included on the soundtrack of the hit Netflix show “Élite”, where it was used in the fourth episode of season 3, which was released with huge success all over the world this past March.

This Digital Single also includes a very special gift – a fantastic remix by Sergio from NOS MIRAN, which pushes the more house facet of the song. And finally, this release is completed with a marvelous video directed by Pooley (Woom Studio), who once again shows off the imagination and chromatic taste for animation and audiovisual collage that were so clear in the incredible videos for LE SUPERHOMARD and A GIRL CALLED EDDY. Here again he is able to give that organic sixties touch to a colorful video full of eighties iconography, in which we sneak inside of Cristina herself’s bedroom. It is an absolute delicacy.

TRACKLIST: 01 Le Midi

Joe Moore is having his moment. He is on fire. In a state of grace. He has countless projects, and on them, he plays with the most diverse musical styles and codes with an uncommon solvency. In addition to Lia Pamina, Cristina Quesada, Maddie Mae, THE PERFECT KISS, and, of course, THE YEARNING, we now have JULIE ET JOE. This is a very special project that the British producer developed with the voice of Julie Big, the singer from LE SUPERHOMARD, as a tribute to the techno-pop music that was made in France at the beginning of the eighties: ELLI & JACNO, LIO, MIKADO, MATHÉMATIQUES MODERNES, BRAQUE and all those singers that made playful melodies that were highly danceable and tremendously fun.

“Le Midi” is an advance from the 10” vinyl Mini-LP that they will release very soon, which will be called “Marelle”. It is a song that boldly puts all its cards on the table (this is all our special tribute to Jacno) and that shows Moore’s ability in such a personal way, that is respectful and full of inspiration. “Le Midi” is joy, freshness, and also comes with an absolutely marvelous video, directed by Pooley (Woom Studio), who does what he knows best: play with colors, with real images, with textures and with audiovisual collage. Here, he gives us a delicious journey to our protagonists’ countryside, and a marvelous nap in a hammock under the summer sun. Exquisite.

By the way, Julie Big also [ Read more ]
