After their previous singles and mini-lp’s, we have been anxiously awaiting the full-length debut from Joe Moore and the rest of THE YEARNING. Their sweet melodies, dreamy arrangements, and passion for the sounds of the fifties, had us so excited, with our hands glued to the needle on the record player, waiting for the right moment to submerge ourselves in the grooves of their first full-length. That moment has finally arrived.

“Dreamboats & Lemonade” plays again with the two sides of love (as their two previous 10”’s did) – the sweeter side and the more bitter side, each represented by the concepts that give the album it’s name and preside over their respective sides of the record. And what better feeling to represent these two facets than the nostalgic melancholy that cradles the small resentments but sugar-coats painful memories. This feeling is the star of this delicious album, which moves between Phil Spector’s wall and Burt Bacharach’s elegance, and doesn’t hide its love for a very specific era and style of understanding pop, decorated with reverb that fades out like Christmas lights.

The album – accompanied by numerous collaborators who make up the THE YEARNING ORCHESTRA, and who share space with wind instruments, strings, electric guitars, and the already known voices of Maddie Dobie (lead vocals) and Alicia Rendle-Woodhouse (backing vocals) – is another emotional journey full of curiou [ Read more ]

Axolotes Mexicanos (Spain)

This Asturian trio, signed to the legendary Elefant Records, career from crazy punk to the most playful, DIY electro-pop with energy, muscle, strength and ferocity.  Olaya, Stephen and Juan evoke the wildest and most fun moments of the indie explosion that happened in the early 80s in Spain. The band’s first  release, “Infectados”, is Helen Love  and Pegamoides pogo-dancing in celebration of one of the group’s biggest passions – zombies!

Linda Guilala (Spain)

A fter the split of Juniper Moon at the end of 2005, Iván (former drummer and founder of the band) and Eva (keyboards) started their new adventure under the name of Linda Guilala. Their latest release, ‘Xeristar’ (Elefant Records) contains six intense, electrifying compositions that go from furious to narcotic, somewhere between Los Planetas, Ride, Clinic, My Bloody Valentine and Spiritualized at their spaciest and most ultrasonic.

The Yearning

Founded by songwriter/producer Joe Moore and signed to the legendary Elefant Records, the band’s songs ache of a bygone innocence and simplicity, as influenced by Phil Spector’s girl groups, Brian Wilson’s ‘Pet Sounds’ and Irving Berlin’s classic songwriting. Their debut [ Read more ]

THE YEARNING’s debut full-length will be here really soon, and to whet our appetites, Joe Moore and his gang are giving us a song as an advance digital single – “If I Can’t Have You”. The song is a summary of many of the constants that have caught our attention up to now: delicious melodies with fifties tendencies, prodigious productions along the lines of the masters like Phil Spector,Jack Nietzsche andBurt Bacharach, and lyrics obsessed with the two sides of sentimental relationships. And they do it again, with that opening drum line that’s so characteristic, and those castanets adorned with heavenly choruses, evoking some of the best girl groups in history, like THE RONETTES and THE VELVELETTES. An absolute delicacy.

As a gift with this release, a version of THE NOLANS’ “Gotta Pull Myself Together”, exclusive for this digital single, in which Maddie Dobie’s voice once again dazzles us in that highly addictive chorus, while the guitar arrangement takes us to the limit. It’s a teaser that heightens, if it is even possible, our impatience to get our hands on this first album that has us so excited, and that we’ve been dreaming about so much.

It has been a few years since Javi and Coral’s songs began forming a part of our catalogue. And in those years, BAND À PART has grown little by little, their releases have sold out and gone out of print, and the whole world has heard of them and enjoyed their songs. “Maravillas De La Ciencia” is like a summary of all of this and much more, a compilation of their singles, their Mini-LP, songs from other compilations, and even a few previously unreleased tracks as little gifts.

This collection of songs is necessary for so many reasons; the first and most obvious is that all of their releases so far are absolutely sold-out and no longer available. Small collectors’ pieces with incredible cover art by artists as distinguished as Borja Bonafuente and Ray Kimura (and nowwe can add the cover for “Maravillas De La Ciencia” to this list, with artwork by Paco Martinez Tomás [Odewill]). They are also necessary in order to recover those versions they did of FAMILY (“El Bello Verano”, for the recently released tribute album) and of LOS PLANETAS (that “David y Claudia” that was included on the single “Franny Y Tú”). But above all, it is necessary to evoke a space in time in which, together, we have enjoyed marvellous things. The time begins when they won the demo contest in Contempopránea 2008 (from which they wrote their main theme song) and which brought them to play in festiva [ Read more ]

After the vitality and speed of their debut 7” single, “Eat Tacos EP” as part of our New Adventures in Pop collection, which even got them a nomination for the Musica Independiente awards, the new release, a mini-LP, from AntíaMartaGuille and Miguel, which is to say, WILD BALBINA, has arrived. Recorded by themselves the past summer and autumn of 2013, in their bunker in Vigo, “Sisters Before Misters” reflects and expands on all the constants we could see in their first songs: youthfulness, energy, electricity, and freshness. It’s a journey from garage pop to Riot Grrrl to surf, incorporating influences like NME’s C86 and the California sound.

To start with, “Stay Alive” is the perfect meeting point between the unforgettable choruses of the SHOP ASSISTANTS and the dissonance of the PIXIES. The song is full of hope which is expressed through the distortion in their guitars. “Looking Through You” keeps the levels of immediacy high, mixing the melodic skill of ECHOBELLY and the electric ferocity of BIKINI KILL, and talks about the passing of time and the lies that try to cancel it out. Their sound is dominated by a collection of unleashed and uninhibited melodic venting, like we can see in “Blue Hour” and which contrasts with the lyrics that are about melancholy and the saddest moments, and that make it absolutely clear how important this band with abundant attitude is.  [ Read more ]

Any record label appearance with Teresa Iturrioz and Ibon Errazkin as protagonistsis always a huge question mark; it is absolutely impossible to predict what path they will take with each new installment, and it is precisely this uncertainty that is, for many of the duo’s fans, their greatest charm. We never know what they are going to surprise us with, but we always know for sure that they will win us over with their lyrics, their melodies, their arrangements, and that unique universe of theirs that they have been creating all these years.

“Rea” is SINGLE’s best album. Submerging yourself in the album’s songs and discovering all the surprises hidden throughout it is magical. The dub and reggae sounds that Ibon and Teresa are so passionate about abound, and it’s main point of reference is Lovers Rock, a movement which started in the very early days of reggae, when important Jamaican and U.S. singers like Ken Boothe, Johnny Nash and John Holt all achieved international succ [ Read more ]

April is the cruelest month, breeding / Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing / Memory and desire, stirring.

Melding music and poetry, they will perform their own compositions, the work of others such as Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, W.G. Sebald, Hildegard von Bingen, and salute friends and companions who have passed on in their own transformation. This event is hosted by Spinning On Air's David Garland.

JESSE PARIS SMITH and ERIC HOEGEMEYER began performing as WaterOx Vs FireRabbit in late 2012. On May 5th, “Rea”, SINGLE’s new album, is being released. The album was produced by HIDROGENESSE, and once again, the cover (pictured), is (a masterpiece) by Javier Aramburu.

She already won us over with her sweet voice on her debut, “Descalços Sobre A Terra”. Dipping her passion for the earth into the currents of musical waters, Flávia Muniz attracts the exoticism of OS MUTANTES, the sweetness of Elis Regina, the most playful spirit of Gilberto Gil, and the melodies of Joao Gilberto. This is a hidden gem that will delight fans of popular Brazilian music. Here at Elefant Records we are celebrating the release of this new digital single, presided by “Mãe D'água”, included in her aforementioned album, and accompanied here by two previously unreleased tracks, taken from the same recording sessions.

The first is one of the best demonstrations of what this young Brazilian is capable of: tropical rhythms and the fresh breeze of the most refreshing and exciting bossa, all wrapped around a hymn to life and to mother earth. “T.e.m.p.o.” accepts small forays into jazz (a style that has always sauntered alongside the Musica Popular Brasileira) to set up an exuberant development, full of flirtatious and surprising structures, to end up with the unmistakable flavor of one of the great songs from the Bahia area. “Tempo de Aurora”, the closing track of the digital single, is a delicacy that offers a lesson in roots, tropicalism, fantasy, and imagination, with that flute responding to the  voice of our beloved singer.

The Scottish band continues to releasesome of the best songs from their second album, “Super Deluxe” (their first for Elefant Records), and this time they’re doing it with a new digital single that includes a surprising video. The chosen song for this occasion is “Orbison”, a tribute to the legendary singer Roy Orbison andone of those trademark Attic Lightssongs: romantic yearning, powerful guitars, addictive choruses and bursting withenergy. And we get a previously unreleased track as an extra gift, “Known Outsider”, on which ATTIC LIGHTS show us their more peaceful side, leaving the urgent electricity of the majority of their songs to one side and embracing a precious melody with deliciously unfolding guitar rhythms and an invigorating chorus.

And of course, the audiovisual element is full of pop culturereferences and homages to the great Roy Orbison, though, all of them, oddly enough, are indirect. We can enjoy a recreation of the turbulent scene from “Blue Velvet” (David Lynch) in which Dennis Hopper observes Dean Stockwell performingan androgynous interpretation of “In Dreams”. We also find scenes inspired by the sequence in “The Man Who Fell to Earth” (Nicholas Roeg) in which David Bowie channel-surfs while Roy Orbison’s“Blue Bayou” plays in the background. Also referenced arethe strange stories of Michael Kelly and [ Read more ]

Digital single and video for "Lo Siento Mucho": 24 February 2014

Release date "Xeristar" Mini LP 10": 17 March 2014

There is no room for doubt that there is going to be a before and an after “Xeristar” in LINDA GUILALA’s career. Maybe it’s the time they’ve taken since their last EP, during which they’ve been producing groups like AXOLOTES MEXICANOS, WHEN NALDA BECAME PUNK and LOS BONSÁIS, among others, in their Kaiju studios. They’ve also been accompanying Marco Maril as the live band for APENINO. Maybe it’s the definitive incorporation of Bruno Mosquera as a guitarist in the band, who has brought that wall of sound that Ivan and Eva were looking for. But the thing is that we are without a doubt looking at their best collection of songs – six intense, electrifying compositions that go from furious to narcotic, somewhere between LOS PLANETAS, RIDE, CLINIC, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, and SPIRITUALIZED at their spaciest and most ultrasonic.

In fact, their “Medication” brings us the title of this limited-edition, transparent-vinyl 10” mini-LP. It’s a reference to an antidepressant medication, an evident symbolism that highlights their capacity for energy. And as proof: “Chicas Guapas (Que Van A Trabajar En Moto)” is a pure crack of a whip, with a super-catchy chorus, the ferocity of a well-armed A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS, and program [ Read more ]

Ever since we first heard their marvelous “Cosmos”, we are melting at the thought of the groove-pop that FITNESS FOREVER’s new album takes it shape from. And is if we needed anything else, the group fronted by Carlos Valderrama are feeding the flames of our passion with a new digital single, for the album’s title track, and a video that is equal parts surprising and fun.

The song, the only one on the album that Scialdone sings, evokes the funk hallucinations of SUN RA or Stevie Wonder with a carefree spirit, reflected in crystal balls and ultra-bright neon. Our hips are still shaking from the first time we heard them. To complete the digital single, there is a spectacular remix by MODULAR, that gives our Argentinian band that spacey touch with a cocktail flavor they know how to work so well. Mariana and Pablo have created a spacey Dub to float on the most exclusive dance floors on Saturn. And to wrap things up, there’s a live acoustic version, produced by DUO BORDÉL (guitar and viola) that includes the participation of FITNESS FOREVER’s flute player, Francesca Diletta Iavarone, and the vocals of Carlos Valderrama himself. It’s a totally different, intimate version, but surprising and full of emotion. The cherry on top is the sparkling new video full of sequins, bright signs, and 70s-styled visual effects. Like an old, found VHS of the recording of a group simulating a live studio perfo [ Read more ]
