There are some dates you can never forget. At Elefant, we’ll never forget the day “Un Soplo En El Corazón” came out. The album received critical and popular acclaim, and was labeled as one of the best albums in the history of Spanish pop. It became a legend, especially with that shroud of mystery that Javier Aramburu (also one of the most important album cover designers in the country) and Iñaki Gametxogoikoetxea created by barely giving any interviews, not letting themselves be photographed, not doing any live shows. So, the twentieth anniversary of an album that was and is so special to us is cause for celebration here at Elefant Records, and we’re celebrating with a limited-edition vinyl re-release, with 1000 numbered copies.

This is a really special release that is available again (after many years of being completely out-of-print) in a format full of romanticism, so that we can enjoy such truly marvelous songs in such a special way and, while we’re at it, pay homage to the memory of songs that will forever be a part of the history of Spanish pop music. There is so much proof of the album’s legacy, like that RockDeLux magazine issue that names it album of the year, album of the decade, and placed it on the list of the top 20 national albums of the 20th century. AB Redacción also called it the best album of the decade, and declared “Nadadora” the second best song of the 90s. We could go on like thi [ Read more ]

That advance single “Atomic” already let us in on the secret: HELEN LOVE’s new album, the sixth in their career and their second on Elefant Records, is new proof of their almost insultingly youthful energy, this time with a special focus on synth-pop. The almost six years we’ve had to wait to be able to enjoy a new full-length have been totally worth it to get to “Day-Glo Dreams”. The album makes their personal, unmistakable style more and more their own, mixing punk attitude (Joey Ramone will always be in their hearts), bubblegum melodies, and disco-dance rhythms.

And, actually, the album opens with clear intentions – that life philosophy that is reflected in the accelerated techno-pop of “We Are All The Lo-Fi Kids”. But soon the terrain of Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder comes into play: the girls themselves admit that “Together In Electric Dreams” was a huge influence for this album and they show it openly on the album’s title track. The super fun synthesizer lines layered over drum machines in and of themselves pay homage to the ele [ Read more ]

In 2010, totally captivated by their debut album, we added THE MAGIC THEATRE to our Elefant family. After many months of hard work, and after giving us their delicious “Christmas Lights” for our compilation, “A Christmas Gift For You From Elefant Records”, the moment has finally arrived for us to be able to enjoy their first release on our record label – this 4-song vinyl single, an advance of what will be their new album, “The Long Way Home”, to be released this coming fall.

THE MAGIC THEATRE rises from the ashes of OOBERMAN, that British band that The Times and Radio One’s Mark Radcliffe gave “single of the year” to, for “Blossoms Falling”, at the beginning of the last decade. The founding members, Dan Popplewell and Andy Flett, have known each other since their school days and they’ve developed various projects together, though it wasn’t until the end of the nineties when they began putting out albums under the name of OOBERMAN (with Steve Flett, Allan Kelly and Sophia Churney) that they began to receive public and critical recognition. Their three albums, “ [ Read more ]

To talk about HELEN LOVE these days is to talk about inexhaustible energy, about infinite youth, about the most iconoclastic cheekiness we can imagine. After five albums (three compilations and two official albums) and close to twenty singles, we get “Atomic”, the advance single from what is going to be their upcoming album on Elefant Records, “Day-Glo Dreams”. The album will be marked by the move toward eighties-styled synth-pop, accentuating the group’s most techno-pop facet, though without leaving behind that explosive punk spirit that bursts into powerful little pills.

The title-track of this digital single, “Atomic”, is proof of what we were saying before: it has an unforgettable chorus, marked by bubbling synthesizer lines in a story of teenage love that will make fans of THE HUMAN LEAGUE and SILICON TEENS swoon. The remaining two songs on the digital single are both previously unreleased tracks. The first song, “Giant Kiss”, goes in exactly the opposite direction, following along the lines of the girl-groups from the sixties, somewhere between THE SUPREMES and THE SHANGRI-LA’s. It’s irresistible and super catchy, with those “oh oh ohs” that were born to be hummed. It’s a rare bir [ Read more ]

We keep adding to our collection of singles promoting new groups that we believe have a promising future in the national and international music scenes. Just because the groups are new doesn’t always mean that the musicians are newcomers, as is the case with some of the singles we’ve released earlier in the collection, and as is the case with this latest release in the New Adventures In Pop collection. Starting today, New Adventures In Pop has three new releases under its belt. One of these is LAS ANNETTES, Ana Vaquero’s (LA MONJA ENANA, COLA JET SET) new group, in which she plays with Violeta Iglesias and Estel Alcañiz (who, like Ana, also forms a part of COLA JET SET). They openly display their passion for girl-groups, sunshine-pop, and northern soul. Cristina Quesada, another of the three releases and one of those well-known secrets on the national scene, is finally debuting officially, with her sweet voice and ukulele. Finally, BELLE GHOUL are putting out their second release on the New Adventures In Pop collection with a new 7” on which Jesse Smith (Patti Smith) and Christopher Tait (ELECTRIC SIX) unleash their complex and precious vision of pop. All of them, as always, are limited-edition colour vinyl.

"Los Siervos De La Gleba" An advance Single in digital format of their upcoming LP "La Falta Básica" [Release Date: 1st July]

“Los Siervos De La Gleba” is about, a parallel between feudal society and current society in which BLA, without leaving the condemning behind, use their ingenuity to turn it into a passionate medieval love story in which they ask in exchange, at least, from life, for a more medieval love, more brutal, the love of dragons and fire and darkness. The subject directly inspired the wardrobe that Oscar Guimarey made for the cover and the album’s promotional image, with a touch of romance belonging to a medieval princess-dragon in denim for Belén and for Luis he made a laborer uniform with armor, also in denim. The philosophy moved Rafi Gnecco and Maria LaMuy of I Loop You and BLA to choose cardboard as the total image for their cover photo and the video, as the representative element of austerity.

“La Mejor Enfermedad” was a significant leap in the musical career of Luis G. Morais and Belén Chanes: from wild, barefaced techno-pop of L-KAN to the mastered and paused electronic pop with BLA’s acoustic accents. After more than two years of silence, they’re back with “La Falta Básica,” with the belief that [ Read more ]

We had news about THE YEARNING recently, because of their single “Baby Be Mine”, from their first and marvellous debut Mini-LP, “Jukebox Romance”. With barely time to enjoy such a tasty dish, we have a new menu on our hands, a 10” vinyl (also available in digital format), “Still In Love,” a new Mini-LP where Joe Moore spreads his stylistic wings. This release is even more exciting than the last one, if that’s even possible, and it gives even more solid proof of his incredible abilities as a composer and arranger, with his sights always set on Phil Spector.

“Aurora”, LA BIEN QUERIDA’s new video, closes the audiovisual trilogy dedicated to the art of the cinema that began with the release of their third album, “Ceremonia”. First, there was “Arenas Movedizas”, directed by Iker Insausti and Jeffrey Frígula, which paid homage to classic mystery and horror films. Ana, David, and Fran (LA BIEN QUERIDA’s new live line-up) find themselves in the middle of mysterious circumstances where evil forces and everything that is diabolic come together to give birth to a strange being. With “A Veces Ni Eso”, directed by Ernest Desumbila and produced by Limon Estudios, we go full Technicolor to travel to the parallel worlds of “Lost in Translation”, “Closer”, “Léolo”, “Holy Motors” and “Kill Bill” in a passionate and impressive video. Now, with “Aurora”, Lluís Prieto (Llaüt Digital) submerges us, under a sweet and heavenly guise, in a ruthless story of jealousy, betrayal, and death.

LA BIEN QUERIDA, after several concerts to launch the latest album, and their recent participation in the 2013 edition of Primavera Sound Festival, are continuing their club tour and will be making appearances at some of the most important festivals in the country this summer: Sonar, Contempopranea, La Mar De Músicas, Arenal Sound, Lemon Pop…

Release Date: 27 May 2013

There’s no doubt that the duo from Asturias formed by Nel González and Helena Toraño are at a joyfully creative high point. After the recent release of their Mini-LP, “Martín Pescador,” they’re back with a digital single that includes two previously unreleased tracks taken from the same recording session that brought about their last release.  The songs celebrate their fondness for dirty guitars and pop melodies, somewhere between THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN and THE PASTELS.

And the title track is precisely the opening track of “Martín Pescador,” that blast of urgency mixed with celestial voices that is “Serín.” The song describes the landscape on a train ride from between Oviedo and Gijón (which the group has also shown so well in their new video). “El Retorno,” the first of the new songs, brings the best of the Reid brothers to the territory of LINDA GUILALA (remember that Iván and Eva are holding the controls of this recording), with bass lines that could perfectly have been written by Kim Deal, on a song about second chances set in a marine fantasy environment. “Telefilme” leans more openly toward the pop-punk, with echoes of their beloved SHOP ASSISTANTS and THE PRIMITIVES, showing off their sense of urgency and immediacy with a song that makes it impossible for our feet not to tap and our bodies not s [ Read more ]

VIDEO-CLIP "Sangre En Los Zapatos (Mi Amor)"

“Sangre En Los Zapatos (Mi Amor)” is an unquestionable hit, a classic disco song produced by Guille Milkyway (LA CASA AZUL), that makes euphoria break out on the dance floor, between echoes of ALASKA Y DINARAMA, SCISSOR SISTERS and CHIC. It’s going to be played non-stop in the best indie clubs and the lyrics will lead to some of the most terrifying choreographies on the indie planet. And since they’re anything but predictable, the following song.

VIDEO "Meteoritos En Hawaii"

“Meteoritos En Hawaii”, completely changes gears: an irreverent punk song, very 80’s, along the lines of LAS CHINAS, EJECUTIVOS AGRESIVOS and GLUTAMATO YÉ-YÉ, with lyrics full of corrosive irony, “¡No te vayas, no me dejes solo en Honolulu! / ¡No te vayas, no me dejes, me da mucho yuyu!” (Don’t go, don’t leave me alone in Honolulu! / Don’t go, don’t leave me, it’s spooky without you).Inimitable.

We already told you the news when we put out the “Say You Love Me” single – the Scottish group ATTIC LIGHTS has a new album! After making themselves the best news to happen to pop music in recent years, now they’re releasing their second full-length album, “Super De Luxe,” on Elefant Records. Francis MacDonald (TEENAGE FANCLUB, NICE MAN) worked as a producer on the album, as did John McLaughlin, who has also produced groups like ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN and has worked with artists ranging from GLASSVEGAS to the very Lamont Dozier. Jim Langalso collaborated on the production work for the album and he made himself a fully entitled member of the group, led by Kev Sherry and Colin McArdle. And here we have it, with the same name as the jukebox that Tim Davidson, the group’s guitarist, has in his apartment. The jukebox has come to mean a lot to the group, a physical representation of nice, relaxing moments after the intense writing and recording sessions that went into the making of this incredible new album. It’s an energy boost, full of powerful guitars that push the limits with the vitality and the bright, luminous melodies that come from growing up in Glasgow.

“Say You Love Me” is the album’s opening track and is solid proof of all of the previously mentioned qualities. It opens the gates to the flood of potential singles the tremendously entertaining and easy-to-listen-to album is packed full of.&nb [ Read more ]
